It got worse the closer it got, and it only ever approached faster.
It was a dream he thought he’d grasped. Happiness he thought was in his hands. But then he wondered why he’d even wanted that in the first place.
He couldn’t recall, even though he’d sacrificed so much for it. Even though he’d killed so much for it. He’d become so obsessed with moving forward that he could hardly recall why he was doing it. And by the time he realized that, Ryner had already disappeared.
“……”
Sion couldn’t see it. Maybe no one could. But he knew that something had happened. He knew, so…
He couldn’t…
He raised his head. When he did, a dazzlingly confident smile was plastered on his face. It was the face of a king. He turned back to face the soldiers, who all still had their bows at the ready. “The threat has retreated. We won!”
He couldn’t…
The soldiers cheered in absolute joy. They didn’t have to understand anything at all - if their kind said they won, then that meant that they won.
Their enemy had disappeared amidst a sea of arrows. The vast majority of soldiers had probably seen it as their enemy… as that monster being annihilated. So they cheered and applauded Sion for leading them to victory. He was their matchlessly benevolent lord, their hero king. They all sang his praises.
Ferris looked at him. “King… huh?”
With that she turned away and began to walk off.
“Hey, Ferris. I…”
“Ryner was right. It’s not your fault.”
“No, I…”
“All you did was try to protect the things that—”
Sion didn’t hear the rest of what she had to say. Because her voice was drowned out by cheers. Then she disappeared among the soldiers. But he still watched the place she’d disappeared to for some time.
Nobody criticized him at all.
“How can you say it’s not my fault?” He whispered.
It obviously was.
Just listen. Listen to them sing his praise. Listen to how no one criticized him, all because he was their perfect king.
Even with Ryner… he just did what he had to do. Who could criticize that? Who would criticize that?
He recalled what Ferris said. He recalled the face Ryner made at the last second. He looked like he wanted to be forgiven, to the point that it’d brought him to tears.
Sion was the one who had hurt him, and yet… no one… no one would criticize him…
“I can’t… breathe…”
No one heard his gasping voice. The only thing they heard was the sound of everyone singing his praises.
It was too loud. Overwhelmingly loud. It was worse the closer it got…
---
Ten days had passed.
Ferris had already returned to Roland. She was going through her morning routine, chatting with the owner of Wynnit Dango just like always. This was her morning routine before she left on her journey with Ryner - she’d come here morning after morning to sample the daily dango and chat with the owner. So she was doing it again now that she was back in Roland and all.
Everything had gone back to how things were before she went on that trip. Nothing had changed at all. And nothing was wrong with that.
“What do you think of today’s flavors?” The owner asked her.
Ferris nodded while stuffing her cheeks. She was happy about the taste. It was absolutely perfect. It’d been perfect before she left, too, but now it was even better than that.
In the end, the best dango of all was the dango closest to home.
What more did she need in life?
The owner took a good look at his dissatisfied face, then spoke. “Even so, you’re going to go on another journey for the world’s best dango, aren’t you, Lady Ferris?”
Ferris looked down at her feet. There were seven backpacks full of dango that the owner had prepared for her there. Then she looked up at the rising sun and cloudless sky. Today would definitely be bright and sunny. There was no better weather than today’s. She could easily spend it having a fun dango party with Iris, Arua, and Kuku in the Eris gardens.
She really didn’t have anything to be dissatisfied about. She didn’t need anything else…
But she swallowed her dango, then picked all seven backpacks up.
“…No, this time I’m going on a journey to find that idiot and discipline him,” Ferris said. It was far too faint for anyone to notice it, but she was smiling.
