Chapter 25.2: Their Face Turned Purple

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

The crowd’s eyes instantly lit up. Their spirits rose tremendously greatly awaiting Zhang Bo Yan slap Shen Lang’s face.

Who is Zhang Bo Yan? He is a scholar versatile in a wide range of books. He’d often visit places of ancient sites to further his knowledge. Once upon a time, he was appointed by the royal family to act as the head of Xuanwu City. After his retirement, Zhang Bo Yan opened a school in Xuanwu City and many great talents wished to worship him as their teacher.

How profound is his knowledge?

And why does Zhang Bo Yan dare to confront the Count?

This was in regards to the New Deal. More than a decade ago, the royal family began to take back the feudal lands and powers from the giant aristocratic nobles.

Previously, the Count had ruled over Xuanwu City, but as the New Deal came to existence, the Count had but no choice to give up his ruling position and allow the royal family to appoint the new head of Xuanwu City.

Since then, each head appointed by the royal family had a clear goal in mind and that is to draw a clear line and fight against the old nobles in the shadows.

Shen Lang smiled. “Since Senior Zhang is eager to test me, I might as well.”

Neither the Count nor Jin Mulan stopped Shen Lang’s advances. He’d just returned the face they’ve lost. Even if he lost to Zhang Bo Yan, it held no great meaning.

What sort of person is Zhang Bo Yan? A well-reputed scholar.

Shen Lang had only studied in Hanshui Town School for a few slight years.

Isn’t it normal that he lose?

Upon seeing his teacher coming out to redeem the face he lost, or at least he thought so, Yan Xiong’s face brightened. He was overjoyed.

He quickly rushed forwards and dipped the brush with fresh ink and spread out a large paper. Then, Yan Xiong bent down and handed the brush to Zhang Bo Yan respectfully.

Zhang Bo Yan nodded and picked up the brush and soon began an elegant formation of strokes.

Everyone gathered around. The curious Jin Mulan also looked over.

“Good strokes!”

“Elegant and profound… without years and decades of merit, it is impossible to write something of this level.”

After Zhang Bo Yan finished, everyone applauded his efforts.

The scholar, Zhang Bo Yan, and the former head of Xuanwu City had an art calligraphy that seemed able to peer through one’s soul as it penetrated the back of the paper.

However, none knew the character he painted.

“Senior Zhang’s word is really good. Each stroke is as intoxicating as the last.”

“Yes… even I would not be able to paint a stroke like this even with decades of effort.”

“But… Senior Zhang, what is this word?”

“Right… I don’t know!”

“I don’t know either!”

The crowd shook their head in dismay. None recognized the character painted on the cardinal red paper. Neither the talented scholars, the Count and Countess, and Jin Mulan recognized the character.

Someone spoke up. “Senior Zhang often travels to dig ancient items and to study the monuments and ancient inscriptions. I wonder where this ancient inscription came from… it looks extremely rare. I’m sure it isn’t written in the Books of Five Classics. Does anyone recognize this word?”

Listening to the crowd’s reaction, Zhang Bo Yan felt refreshed like a kiss of morning dew.

The character was indeed taken out of an ancient inscription found on an ancient monument. He was not able to extract nor comprehend the contexts as there was nothing found in the Books of Five Classics regarding the contents of the ancient inscription.

It is understandable no one is able to comprehend the character except those who’d read the ancient inscription in person.

Shen Lang leaned forward and found an inconspicuous flaw. The character looked simple. There were two horizontal lines running across the middle of a straight vertical line. On top of the straight line appeared two strokes that ran in two directions; one moving diagonally to the left and one to the right.

It was a simple character written as ¥. Modern folks from his past life were familiar with the character. It was the symbol of the RMB currency which is read as Yuan in modern times.

But here in this world, it absolutely holds not the meaning of the Yuan currency. So then… what is the meaning of the character and how is it pronounced? Shen Lang was stumped. He did not know.

In the Great Yan Empire, except for the many few who studied the ancient inscriptions and monuments, the rest of the people had never bothered to care for studying ancient inscriptions for they were too preoccupied with otherworldly matters. Studying ancient inscriptions is only a hobby for a small group of scholarly folks.

So the difficulty of the character… it was a pain in the neck.

If Shen Lang we’re to only rely on himself, he’d lose focus of time, but fortunately, he is blessed with a golden finger. Mass information of knowledge was integrated into his mind. One sweep of a glance and the question he searched for would immediately appear in his eyes.

“Shen Lang, this word is extremely difficult.” Said the Count. “If it hadn’t been discovered in the ancient inscriptions, no one would have known of this word. It is only right that you not know of this. Your good mother and father refused to attend the wedding. You and Mulan should go see them.”

This should be a decent place for Shen Lang to stop.

He’d not lose any face.

Zhang Bo Yan no longer cared and paid no heed to Shen Lang. He knew the white lotus would not know of the word. Normally, he’d not go through this effort but the words spoken earlier had struck a chord. He was a proud person, a scholar, and the former head of Xuanwu City, after all. He’d not allow someone to speak so shamelessly to his face.

Zhang Bo Yan looked straight ahead and placed his hands behind him looking a frail, lonely scholar.

“Senior Zhang, if I did not guess wrong, then, you also do not know how to pronounce this word right? But… you should know the meaning of the word based on the context of the ancient inscription even though the pronunciation is unknown.” Shen Lang said.

“Yes, that’s true.” Zhang Bo Yan nodded. “But knowing the meaning is far more important than the pronunciation, isn’t it?”

Shen Lang smiled. “What a coincidence. I just happen to know how to pronounce this word.”

“Impossible!” Yan Xiong retorted. “Teacher Zhang said he only knew the meaning of the word according to the context of the ancient inscription and not the pronunciation. Even other scholars of his level would agree!”

Shen Lang chuckled. “If I know how to pronounce this word and its meaning, how about slapping your face ‘till it turns purple? You keep talking nonsense as you scold me for your ignorance.”

Yan Xiong scoffed. “And if you don’t know? What if you’re mistaken?”

“Then, I’ll slap myself.”

“Well, it’s a deal.” Yan Xiong sneered. “Someone will testify in my place.”

Zhang Bo Yan did not stop for two reasons; it was politically correct to go against the Count’s Palace and also… Shen Lang was too arrogant tonight. The white lotus should be given a good slapping lesson.

“Then… I’ll start.” Shen Lang’s eyes twinkled. “The word is homonymous to endurance.”

“Ha-ha-ha…” Yan Xiong jeered. “Do you want to endure as you think about it? Who can testify for this fool?”

“The meaning of this word should be connected with thorns.” Shen Lang retorted nonchalantly.

Zhang Bo Yan’s countenance darkened. His body trembled and revealed an incredulous look.

This… this is impossible! Had I just seen a ghost? This… this Shen Lang can even recognize a word which has no origin. Young man, how do you know its meaning and pronunciation?!
