Xu Moyan remained calm on the surface as she asked, “Is there anything you don’t like to eat?”
“I’m fine with most food. I just can’t take anything too spicy,” Wei Zilin named an ingredient and began carefully counting with his fingers.
His fingers were long, slender, and perfectly structured. This was a man who displayed an aura of maturity, yet now, as he lowered his eyes to count the food items he did not like, there seemed to be a child-like quality to him. He looked adorable as he did this.
Despite claiming that he was fine with most food, Wei Zilin’s count seemed to go higher and higher. In reality, he was actually really picky with the foods he ate.
Nevertheless, Xu Moyan did not really feel put-off by this. To her, all of Wei Zilin’s traits, good or bad, were adorable.
“I don’t like celery either,” Xu Moyan smiled and said as Wei Zilin counted it out loud.
“Oh? Why is that?” He noticed Xu Moyan relaxed expression and felt the distance between them closing slightly. Wei Zilin asked the question with a smile on his face, seemingly feeling happy.
“I don’t really like the taste of celery. Also, it boosts melanin production, which is why Yuntong and I avoid eating them,” Xu Moyan laughed in embarrassment.
Wei Zilin nodded. Then, he replied seriously, “I’ll take note of that.”
Xu Moyan stared blankly at him. Why would he need to take note of that?
Did he just take note of her dislike of celery? Why would he need to remember what she liked or did not like?
Xu Moyan did not want to overthink it and stopped pondering too much over his choice of words.
She had accused Zheng Yuntong of not being brave enough when it came to love, but when the same thing had happened to her, Xu Moyan was just as much of a coward.
“What about Assistant Shen? I don’t know what Assistant Shen likes to eat.” Xu Moyan tried to hide her emotions and was careful not to look into Wei Zilin’s eyes.
Moments later, she took out her phone to give Zheng Yuntong a call and find out what Assistant Shen likes.
This meal was intended to be a treat for Shen Zongyi, so it would not be nice to exclude him from the decision on what they were to eat.
Wei Zilin had obviously thought about it too, but then he also remembered that he would not have been joining the meal if not for Shen Zongyi. This dampened his mood slightly.
He reached out to pull a shopping cart toward them, and as he pushed the shopping cart along, he said, “Shen Zongyi is not picky with food. He’ll eat anything.”
He gave it further thought, and continued, “This man does not have many preferences. To put it bluntly, he has no particular taste. You can cook anything and he will be fine with it. So, there’s no need to think about what he likes.”
Xu Moyan, “…”
This did not sound too right to Xu Moyan.
However, Wei Zilin did work with Sheng Zongyi all the time. They often talked about business during mealtimes, so it made sense that he had an understanding of Shen Zongyi’s preferences.
Since Wei Zilin had already said so, Xu Moyan did not feel the need to call Zheng Yuntong anymore. As such, she put her phone away. She decided to interpret Wei Zilin’s words as Shen Zongyi being someone who was not picky with food and would eat anything that was prepared.
This made it easier for her to make preparations since all she needed was to take Wei Zilin’s pickiness into consideration. Xu Moyan overcame this by asking Wei Zilin a question every time she picked out an ingredient.
Wei Zilin did not find this annoying at all, and he would reply with a smile every time Xu Moyan asked him a question. The look in his eyes became gentler with every passing question, and his smile grew wider too. It felt like his whole body was buzzing with electricity, which started to become a little too much for Xu Moyan.
Wei Zilin was being too charming, and it did not help that he was her ultimate idol. Xu Moyan had to remind herself repeatedly to not overthink the situation as she tried her best to avoid Wei Zilin’s gaze.
As Xu Moyan was about to make payment at the cashier, a hand reached out to stop her. It was a familiar hand, with its perfect structure highlighting its exquisiteness. As she looked at it, she noticed that the tidy-looking fingers were holding on to a credit card.
Xu Moyan looked over and said, “We agreed that we would the ones treating you to a meal this afternoon.”
“You’re already treating us by doing the cooking. We’ve caused you a lot of trouble by getting you to do this. Besides, it’s only right for the men to pay. Leave it to me,” Wei Zilin smiled. His warm voice sounded like the gentle flowing of spring water.
Xu Moyan looked at him blankly. The young lady behind the counter was similarly mesmerized by Wei Zilin’s voice. She stood there gaping and went into a daze as she forgot to take the card in Wei Zilin’s hand.
There was a slight frown on Wei Zilin’s good-looking face as he watched Xu Moyan go silent. “Please don’t misunderstand. I’m not being masochistic about this. I just don’t think it’s polite to allow a lady to pay.”
Xu Moyan nodded and smiled. “Don’t worry. I didn’t misunderstand what you meant.”
She found it a little funny that Wei Zilin would get anxious about someone else’s opinion of him.
This seemed to pull the unreachable Wei Zilin down closer to her level. She no longer felt as nervous as before and gradually became more comfortable as she conversed with him.
Wei Zilin knew she had misunderstood him. In reality, he did not treat just anybody this way. He would not take the initiative to pay for a woman whom he had no relations to, or if he had no interest in her. For some reason, when it came to Xu Moyan, he wanted to handle the payments for her.
Despite this, Wei Zilin did not bother to explain this beautiful misunderstanding when he saw that Xu Moyan started to warm up to him.
Xu Moyan decided to put away her purse, but saw that the young lady behind the counter was still in a daze.
Xu Moyan found her reaction quite funny. It seemed like this was someone who knew exactly how she felt around Wei Zilin.
It proved that she was not the only one who found Wei Zilin’s voice irresistible. Her Great Lord Wei’s voice had the power to seduce both the old and the young.
This made her feel a little proud.
“Miss, we’d like to pay,” Xu Moyan smiled and said.
The young lady behind the counter jumped and took Wei Zilin’s card as she blushed. She felt very embarrassed.
After they had finished shopping and had paid, they packed everything into the grocery bags. Then, they put the bags into a shopping cart and pushed it into the carpark where Wei Zilin opened his car boot and placed the bags inside.
He did not say a word, but his actions indicated that there was no need for Xu Moyan to do a thing. Nevertheless, she still stood next to him and accompanied him while he packed it all up into the boot.
When all the ingredients were packed inside, Wei Zilin closed the boot. After this, he and Xu Moyan seated themselves into the driver’s and passenger’s seat respectively.
When they exited the supermarket, they quickly realized that they had only been shopping for the ingredients for a little more than 30 minutes. They had not expected it to snow so much in that short period of time.
Xu Moyan watched as the snowflakes floated about. She was in a good mood as her lips curved upward into a smile.
Wei Zilin took a glance at her and asked in a playful tone, “Do you like the snow a lot?”
“I do. I love it when it’s snowing, and the snowflakes fall onto my heard and my coat. I love the way it looks when everything is covered in white right before the snow melts. I love walking in the snow and listening to the light crunching of the thick snow under my feet; it’s so much fun to see every single step being imprinted into the snow,” Xu Moyan said happily. Her eyes curved upward from the big smile on her face.
Then, she suddenly frowned. “But I hate it when the snow stops falling and the thick snow on the ground has been stepped flat until it becomes hard and greyish. The roads become so slippery and I always need to walk so carefully. It looks so awkward to walk on it, and it’s also very inconvenient to go to work. The vehicles on the road have to slow down, so it takes a long time for the public buses to arrive. This always causes everyone to be late for work.”
Wei Zilin listened quietly as he watched her finish telling her story, crinkling up her nose at the end of it.
For some reason, he enjoyed listening to her talking about nothing, even if there was no real point to the story. It was fun just to listen to her talk about her thoughts and chat normally.
He knew that Xu Moyan was always saying that he had a nice voice; even Han Zhuoli said the same thing. If this was not the case, then he would not have gotten Wei Zilin to do the voiceover work for ‘Massacre’.
In Wei Zilin’s opinion, Xu Moyan had a nice voice as well. It was an honest voice that was clear and melodious. She spoke a little too quickly and he could tell that she was someone who was a little impatient and did not like to waste time when handling work. Xu Moyan’s voice also told him that she was a straightforward person and was not very fussy.
“When I was younger, I never liked winter because it was so cold, but later, there was a really popular Korean drama called ‘Winter Sonata’. Do you remember that? The main characters wore big coats and had scarves wrapped around them which they often hid their chins into. When they spoke, you could see wisps of white smoke appearing from their mouths. Everything in the movie looked so pristine and crystal clean.”
Xu Moyan smiled and looked toward Wei Zilin. He was looking straight ahead while he drove and listened on. “From then onwards, I realized that winter was really beautiful.”
Wei Zilin smiled lightly and turned toward her while they were at a red light.
For some reason, he had a deep look in his eyes, with his dark soulful eyes seemingly focusing on her and pulling her into them.
Xu Moyan wanted to turn away from his gaze, but she found herself unable to do so. Her lips opened slightly as she let herself fall into his eyes. She just could not pull away from his face.
“I think I might like the winter too,” Wei Zilin said lightly. His voice was deep and warm, like sitting next to a warm fireplace in a wooden cabin on a snowy day. Xu Moyan could feel the golden light from the fireplace shine on her, warming her up from head to toe.
Xu Moyan felt like he wanted to say something more, but Wei Zilin quickly turned back to face the front as the light turned green before continuing to drive.
Actions like this could easily make Xu Moyan’s mind go into overdrive.
Xu Moyan silently thought about something else as she turned to look outside the window.
There was a couple by the roadside holding hands. The girl’s hand must have been cold because the boy had held her hand and placed it into his coat pocket. The girl then lifted her head and gave the boy a sweet smile.
Xu Moyan smiled too. She was envious of them and felt at a loss.
