This is a story from long ago.
There was a small country with a large forest, a pack of wolves lived in there.
Inside that herd, there was one large wolf acting as the leader. It has been living for a long time, with cooperation the pack have been living without coming into contact with humans as much as possible.
One day, one young wolf disappeared from the group.
Its companions were so worried, what if the humans have caught it, they were shivering as if in fear that an eagle would come and pluck out their livers (I think this is an allusion to how every day, an eagle would tear out the Liver of Prometheus) (TN: と胆を冷やしました, i don’t really undertand what it mean in english and have translated it in the simple english that i know if it’s wrong please tell me)
However, the young wolf returned to its pack with the expression as if nothing has happened at all.
They asked where did he go to and wanted to hear what he had been doing but the young wolf decided not to explain what he did.
After a short time, the wolves have forgotten about it and the young wolf disappeared from the flock again. Then, after a little while he returned again.
The wolf brethren asked again where did he go, and what had he been doing.
The young wolf did not answer. He replied that he has not going anywhere and been doing anything.
That was a lie, and everyone understood that. Even the young wolf understood that.
Nevertheless, the young wolf was determined not to tell the truth.
When it continued to happen 2 to 3 times, finally the leader felt that it needed to do something.
“Young wolf, where on earth did you go, what are you doing”
“Pack Leader, I did not go anywhere. I was just separated for only a little distance, and no one from the pack saw me, that’s why they thought I was missing” (TN: The young wolf say this with respect for the leader)
「That was pretend to be thing or something similar to it, even infant can understands that. Why would I take risk and say the truth」(Not sure what this is about so I have no idea what to correct)
The young wolf was never going to say the truth. The same lie was repeated as if it’s the truth.
This made the pack leader even more worried on how to settle it. Maybe if I ask the young wolf directly he might consider telling me the reason.
After a short time, the young wolf was once again separated from the flock. But this time, the leader ordered the other wolves to chase the young wolf.
The young wolf was located entering near the forest entrance and going into a small hut.
The wolf who pursued him was surprised. That young wolf, the reason he disappeared every time was to see a human.
The one living inside that hut was an old woman. The old woman, without being frightened of the appearance of the young wolf, welcomed him. And brought the young wolf, with her to walk behind the hut.
A small tombstone stood there with gentle sunlight at the center. Here and there, flowers were fluttering beautifully while being grazed by the wind.
When the old woman has cleaned the weeds surrounding the tombstone, she called the wolf, and together they give a silent prayer.
Afterwards, the old woman figure disappeared into the hut when she’s done giving the young wolf a gentle pat. The young wolf was in a good mood and returned back to the road, when he see the figure of the wolf.
This time, the young wolf was in great panic when he realize who was there.
“Young wolf. What are you doing?”
“My brethren. Please, would you overlook on this. I don’t intend to bring harm to the pack. I simply want to go together with the old woman to the tombstone.”
“Doing something together like that with the human, is it that good? If a living thing dies, it returns back to the earth, and becomes one together with the world. It’s best for you to focus on the living world or you would die quickly.”
「My brethren please understand. I believe, surely, if we were to lose someone dear, we will want go to their side immediately. But, living things like us cannot see that. And can’t be aware of it. We don’t have a place to return to, perhaps humans and the deceased does but it is not that much different to us. As for that human, that tombstone made from stone can be seen as the home of the deceased. You can consider that location as where the deceased once lived.」(Not exactly sure about the context)
“That’s just a human’s selfish thought. It’s unnecessary for us wolves”
“However my brethren, I am still scared. If my mother died, and becomes one with the world, I want to have proof that my mother once existed. With it, I can prove that my mother once lived in this world because I am here. But, if I were disappeared, what will happen? Proof that my mother once existed at one time will be gone. Thus, proof that I had lived at one time, will never have existed.”
“Young wolf, what I want to say is-”
“I just want proof. For them, even if they die, they still have proof that they once exist. With only one tombstone you would be able to prove it. Even if we die this tombstone will still be left here. It will continue to be here for a long time. Just like a small thorn that stuck at the fingertips. It will be a reminder about somebody who has already gone.”
What was the young wolf thinking, the wolf that went after him couldn’t seem to understand. Even if another wolf died, was there any wolf that would be bothered?
At least, the wolf didn’t think there’s any at all.
“Humans must have been bringing bad influence to you. Must be that old human’s fault.”
“No, no, it’s not at all. That old woman, was only giving me a pat when I’m near that tombstone. I’m sure that if we lose something then you will understand the meaning for it’s existence”
“No, you have been corrupted. That old woman must be killed, that tombstone must too be destroyed, and such thoughts must be shattered and corrected.”
Just like that, the wolf started going towards the hut where the old woman was. And the young wolf with haste, pursued him immediately.
When the young wolf went inside the hut, he saw that the figure of an old woman being bitten by the wolf.
The young wolf went towards the old woman. However there was also the possibility of the wolf’s fangs being bared towards the young wolf. The wolf’s fangs, accurately aimed at the old woman’s neck, and is on the verge of biting it.
The young wolves made a decision to intervene between the wolf and the old woman. Stupid young wolf, the wolf’s fangs went deeply inside his brethren’s body.
The wolf surprised, turned around, and rushed out from the hut just like that.
The young wolf that had been bitten in order to save the old woman who would have been killed, was left to die.
The old woman while hugging the young wolf, she gave a pat gently.
The young wolf did not raised its voice like usually it would have, while the old woman continue to pat.
After a while, the old woman died.
It’s been decided that her granddaughter will live in the hut where the old woman lived.
The granddaughter’s daily morning work is to preserve the 3 tombstone behind hut.
It’s the tombstone for grandfather, the tombstone for grandmother and also a small tombstone for the young wolf. (TN: I add young on this line because it say only wolf so that can be confusing)
As for the child of the granddaughter, that child will also continue to watch over this tombstone.
A long time has passed, but the wolf was still not forgotten.
The existence of the cemetery is a place where the dead sleep, and also where the dead lay.
