Volume 3 Chapter 9: A Small Assailant

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

At Hinata’s request, her and everyone associated with the church would be handing out food in the slums.

Cain went to the royal castle to pick Hinata up, and then they headed off to the place they would be handing out the food at in the same fashion as they had gone to the church.

No matter how prosperous Esfort was, it still had slums. Orphans who didn’t live in orphanages and people who couldn’t find employment and thus just sat around on street corners: their carriage made its way past such people.

Arriving at the place they would be handing the food out, some sisters and cooperators with the church were already getting everything ready.

Hinata rolled up her sleeves and went and joined them in order to help out.

Cain was there as her bodyguard, so he watched over her from close by.

Hinata put vegetables and meat in a large pot, and prepared bowls and spoons.

When they started handing out the food, so many inhabitants of the slums gathered, it was difficult to believe so many of them had actually existed.

Guards guided them to the queue, but there were so many people from the slums there, even the guards were surprised. Drintor had had slums as well, albeit very small ones. But now, the Dark Guild had been dismantled, an orphanage, job-finding offices, new homes and finally a park had been built, so life there had now stopped being one of suffering.

However, unlike Drintor, where only a few thousand people lived, the royal capital could be called a huge city, as it had some three-hundred-thousand inhabitants. As such, one would need an enormous budget and equally many people do do the same thing there as in Drintor.

No matter how many were lined up in front of the pot, Hinata still filled the bowls with food and passed them over to the residents of the slums. And in return, there was no end to the people who thanked her, crying from happiness.

But, there were still dozens of people in the line, waiting to receive food.

While Cain was watching all that happen, two guards ran up to him.

They were out of breath, so going up to Cain, they took a couple deep breaths before they started talking.

“You’re Viscount Silford, right? There’s an urgent summons from the royal castle for you.”

“Indeed, that would be me, but… I’m currently the Saint-sama’s bodyguard.”

Cain was there as the Saint’s bodyguard. He had no idea why he was being summoned.

“That might be so, but… Marquis Corgino said to summon Viscount Silford…”

Upon hearing the name ‘Corgino’, Cain frowned.

Cain, who, as a viscount, was only a lower-rank noble, would usually have to obey summons from higher-rank nobles like marquises, but he was going to refuse that he was guarding the Saint on royal orders.

“Sorry, but not now. Maybe after I’m finished with guarding the Saint-sama.”

Cain answered, but the guard started trying to convince him otherwise, saying he was told to ‘Definitely bring him back here,’ with an apologetic face.

While they were having such a back-and-forth, a voice came from behind them.

“Cain-dono, you were summoned to the royal capital. We’re plenty as the Saint-sama’s bodyguards. You should go.”

It was the captain. He was making a face that obviously said he wanted a nuisance to leave.

“Even if you say that, I’m currently being her bodyguard, so…”

“So, you don’t believe in us bodyguards? Are you saying that the Holy Country’s prestigious bodyguard corps can’t protect the Saint-sama?”

“– – Understood. I’ll be leaving for a bit. Please take care of her during that time.”

Cain had no choice but to nod, after which he left for the royal castle.

“I’ll be going to the royal castle. Sorry, but could you gather some men to guard the Saint-sama? It would be a problem if something happened to her.”

The guard nodded, and went to call for backup. Cain explained to Hinata that he had been summoned to the royal castle and would be stepping out for a bit, then got on his carriage and headed off.

He arrived half an hour or so later, and was guided to Marquis Corgino’s office by a maid. Knocking on the door, the maid said that Cain was there, and after a voice came from inside saying ‘You can come in,’ she opened the door and stood to the side.

“Do go in…”

Doing as he was told by the maid, Cain entered Marquis Corgino’s office.

Every available space inside the office had an extravagant ornament on it, something Cain found not to be all that tasteful, but it seemed like the absurdly rich were all about it.

“I’m Cain von Silford Drintor. Your Excellency Marquis Corgino, on what business have you called me here…”

Marquis Corgino, who had been slouching in his office, smirked at Cain and beckoned him closer.

Cain sat down in the middle of the sofa he was shown to, while Marquis Corgino sat his heavy body down on a sofa opposite him.

“Sir Cain, I have a favour to ask of you… I want… some of the glasses the Sarakhan company you’re associated with is selling. My wife saw them when she went over to someone else’s place, and now she’s been urging me to get some, as she wants them no matter what. And, thus, I’m at a loss here as to what to do…”

Having left his job of being the Saint’s bodyguard halfway through because he had thought he was being summoned for something major, became speechless at finding out he had only been summoned for something so trifling.

Thinking about how he had left his job for such an insignificant matter, Cain’s mood worsened.

“I’m terribly sorry, but there’s only a limited amount of them for sale. If you make a reservation, we will contact you as soon as they’re finished…”

No matter how bad a mood he was in, the other party here was a high-rank noble. Not wanting to insult him, Cain gave a polite reply.

“But that’s the thing, even using the name of a marquis family to make the reservation, you have to wait multiple months. And they all cost a whole gold coin too! Although, those glasses are indeed quite the wonderful products. And thus, they should be used by higher-rank nobles, no? Come now, Sir Cain.”

“But I’m leaving sales to the company…”

Even then, Marquis Corgino tried to pull Cain back in.

“But Sir Cain, surely you must have some products not being sold by the company with you? If you just parted with that much, it would be fine. Then, whenever you need it, I’ll give you advice on how to govern your territory.”

Cain grimaced more and more as Marquis Corgino became increasingly haughty. However, there were indeed still glasses stored away in his [Item Box]. But, as they were ones he regularly presented to the king, they weren’t something he would part with so easily. And he would especially not give them to Marquis Corgino, whom he found quite disgusting.

But, as he couldn’t stay there for a long time while he was supposed to be being the Saint’s bodyguard, Cain took out a single box from his [Item Box] as if he had just remembered it, and put it down on the table.

“This is a pair of glasses. If it’s only this, then I’m willing to part with them.”

Marquis Corgino’s eyes widened, and he opened the lid expectantly.

Inside the box were two glasses, one with a red pattern on it, and one with a blue one.

Their beauty really seemed to have caught Marquis Corgino’s eye.

“Oho! This, yes, now this! Sir Cain, I am ever so grateful! I’ll immediately get two gold coins ready.”

Raising his heavy body, Marquis Corgino took out a small pouch from his desk and put two gold coins into it.

“With this, my wife will finally stop complaining. I really am grateful.”

“Nono, I’m terribly sorry for only being able to do this much for you.”

Cain put the money away in his pocket.

“Then, I’m supposed to be the Saint-sama’s bodyguard, so if you would excuse me.”

Cain stood up, wanting to return to his bodyguard duties as soon as he could.

Leaving Marquis Corgino in high spirits in his room, Cain took a deep breath.

The pair of glasses he had given Marquis Corgino were souvenirs for the visitors back from his announcement party in his mansion. As Marquis Corgino and his son had incurred the anger of the king, they had run away early, and so he had not been able to give them theirs.

Wanting to go back to his bodyguard duties as soon as he could, Cain had remembered them, and decided to give them over then, as he hadn’t done so yet. He had even gotten two gold coins in return.

Cain left the royal castle in a hurry to get back to guarding Hinata.

Another half an hour by carriage later, he arrived back at the place they were handing out the food at. As they got closer, Cain noticed that the movements of the people were strange.

Some were running away, bowls still in hand. Cain got off his carriage, and, squeezing through the crowd, he made his way to where they were handing out the food.

– – Lying there on the ground, was Hinata.

Cain rushed over to her.

“What’s going on!?”

Cain yelled at the guards.

“I don’t really know… I think some kid ran up to the Saint-sama and touched her for a split second then ran off again, and a little while later, the Saint-sama collapsed.”

Cain held Hinata and used [High Heal] on her.

However, Hinata’s consciousness didn’t return.

“I’m taking her to the church! Bring my carriage over!”

Cain yelled at a guard, who ran off towards Cain’s carriage.

Then, someone tried to block Cain from lifting Hinata onto his carriage.

“This is a blunder of this country… what are going to do about it!”

Cain departed in the carriage, ignoring the angry captain.

Arriving at the church five minutes later, Cain went inside, still holding Hinata. There, he laid her down on a bed that had been prepared.

Even though he had cast healing magic, her face was still deathly pale, she hadn’t regained her consciousness. The bishop then rushed into the room and, seeing her symptoms, his face paled.

“No way, the Saint-sama is… How did it come to this…”

“Bishop-sama, I cast healing magic on her, but she hasn’t improved at all.”

The bishop shook his head at the frantic Cain.

“It might be poison… I’ll try casting [Poison Cure]”

The bishop cast poison curing magic on Hinata, but her complexion didn’t improve a single bit.

“A poison that even [Poison Cure] doesn’t work on…”

While the bishop had seemed to have given up, Cain used [Appraisal], something not everyone could use.

After having confirmed that it was indeed poison, Cain asked the bishop about ‘The Poison of Delpone’.

“Bishop-sama, do you know what ‘The Poison of Delpone’ is?”

Upon hearing those words, the bishop’s face paled, seemingly having given up completely.
