In the morning, the students left the city by carriage.
The place they would be heading to now was Tanbaal, the city of parliament.
The students were going to observe the parliament and how it worked while there, and Cain would also have to discuss his compensation there.
Even though he felt a bit heavy-hearted, he still chatted with the excited Telestia and other two inside the carriage.
On the way, they stayed a night at a staging outpost, and arrived in Tanbaal by sundown the next day.
“So this is Tanbaal…”
There was a huge building in the centre of the city. The Parliament’s assembly hall, which could also be called the symbol of the country, could be seen all the way from the entrance.
They would be given the tour the next day, so arriving at the inn, they were all divided up and relaxed in their rooms.
After dinner, everyone returned to their rooms, but Cain, on the other hand, had something to do.
He had been told by Fort to show up at the guild once they had arrived.
Cain told the teachers a little about what was going on, then left the inn, heading for the guild.
He had reminded the teachers to make sure not to tell Telestia and the other two no matter what. If they found out…
Cain gave an involuntary shudder while walking along.
The adventurers’ guild was quite close to the city centre, so he found it quite easily. Cain opened the door and stepped inside.
It was already dark outside, so the report and handing in of requests had already finished, and voices of laughter came from the bar in an annex to the side.
A few adventurers were chatting while looking at the requests pinned to the request boards, searching for the request they would do the next day.
When Cain entered, everyone glanced at him for a moment, but, losing interest at a uniformed kid walking in, went back to what they had been doing.
Cain went over to a free counter and called out to the receptionist lady there.
“Ummm… I came here because Fort-san told me to drop by the guild, but…”
“Fort-san…? Do you mean Ghazal’s guild master, Fort-san?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“May I ask your name? I’ll have to go check, see.”
“It’s Cain.”
“So you’re Cain-sama. I’ll go check, so please wait a little.”
The receptionist lady went into the back and started talking to her boss sitting there.
When the boss heard Cain’s name, they hurriedly stood up and immediately went out to the counter.
“I am sorry for having made you wait! Sir Silfo- …Cain-sama! A letter came from Fort-san by swift horse, and I’ve heard of its contents. I will go call the guild master, so please show Cain-sama to a private room. Also, please get some tea ready.”
The receptionist lady tilted her head in confusion at her boss’s attitude towards Cain, but she showed Cain into the reception room.
“Please wait here. They will be here soon.”
The receptionist lady bowed and left after having prepared the tea.
Not long after, there was a knock on the door, and two men entered the room. One of them was a human, while the other was an elf.
The two of them smiled and sat down opposite Cain.
Seeing their faces, Cain’s eyes widened.
“You have quite the surprised face, Sir Silford. No, perhaps calling you big-brother-in-law would be better, bro for short. I’m Raden, the guild master here. And this is sub-guild-master Gossack.”
“I’m Gossack. Nice to meet you, Sir Silford.”
The smiling young man who had declared himself the guild master looked no different from Eden.
As such, it was only natural that Cain was shocked.
However, there was something even more important than that.
(He just called me big-brother-in-law, didn’t he…?)
“A-are you perhaps…”
“Yep, it’s as you thought. I’m big sis Tifana’s younger brother. Only by a little though.”
Seemingly not caring about Cain being surprised at the unexpected turn of events, Raden began talking.
“I received a letter from Fort-san. It seems like Minister of Parliament Malph put his hands in the one place he shouldn’t have.”
“Yeah… This is gonna be rough on parliament. It’ll probably turn out to be quite the whopping sum…”
The two of them explained how the parliament would hold a trial like in Cain’s previous life, and eventually declare a verdict. Most of the time, their defence would be heard there, but this time, everyone, including the involved parties had already heard about it, so there was no running away.
Parliament had already been given an explanation, and had made an opening in its schedule to discuss the matter.
As for the exact time, ––it would be right when the Esfortean students would be doing their observation tour.
It was going to be a public hearing, which would be the contents of their study.
“…No way…”
“Yeah, you Esfortean students have your tour that day, right. I think they fitted the schedule to it. They might be thinking you won’t be able to say anything too out-there in front of the other students. MP Malph might’ve been trying to aim for that.”
Not having wanted to turn it into a big deal at first, Cain had thought he would just go to the parliament alone and settle it all.
He had explained it to the teachers, but if it got out that he had been attacked in a foreign country, it would damage the public image of Ilstin. He had been thinking on how to avoid that, but it seemed Malph had had different plans.
Raden surmised that Malph was planning on giving an explanation that would invite sympathy, trying to decrease the amount he had to pay, even by a little.
“Actually, how much is the fine? I don’t really know about how things work here…”
Cain asked, to which Raden opened his mouth after thinking about it a little.
“Fifty, or something around there.”
“Fifty gold coins… that’s quite a lot of money.”
Fifty gold coins was, converted to Yen, around fifty million (~459 200 $). A huge amount of money. It was more money than one got as a settlement for a traffic accident, and Cain hadn’t even been injured.
However, Raden shook his head.
“No, it’s fifty platinum coins. Although not all of it will go to you…”
“Eeeeeeeeh!? That much…”
The fine was five-hundred-million Yen (~4 592 000 $).
It was a considerable amount of money. While Cain’s assets, counting his investments into his city, were more than that, this was still multiple tens of percents of that.
“It’ll probably be something like ten to the parliament, twenty to you, and twenty to Esfort as an apology.”
“Are fines all this hefty…”
“No, it’s because this time was a special case. He caused an attack on a foreign country’s count. Even if it was actually his son that did it, it won’t change the circumstances. Not to mention, he’s one of this country’s MPs. He’ll have to part with quite the fortune.”
After that, they discussed other things that might happen in the parliament.
“Raden-san, Gossack-san, thank you very much.”
“It’s fine. You’re going to become my big bro. Fort should be coming here tomorrow too. He’s going to have to appear at the hearing.”
“All right. Then, see you then.”
Cain shook hands with the two of them, then left the guild, returning to the inn.
“What will His Majesty say about this…”
Thinking such thoughts, Cain fell asleep.
