Volume 7 Chapter 1: An Assassination

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

A white cityscape. In its very centre, there was a magnificent white temple, looking up at which, anyone would exclaim in wonder.

It was the main temple of the Marineford religion, and the core of the Holy Country of Marineford.

Two men covered entirely in black were standing in an extravagantly decorated room inside. An old man, wearing a white robe, was cowering on the floor.

His white robe was stained red here and there.

“…Ugh…”

The white-robed old man groaned from pain, but ignoring that, the men kicked him, inflicting more pain.

“Do you feel like opening the treasury already?”

“…I…cannot do that… I can not open it…”

The pope refused to open the treasury, even while enduring the pain. However, the attackers revealed their next card.

Another person in all-black appeared through the door, holding a still young and now unconscious girl in one hand.

Orphans who had received blessings were raised as apprentices in the church’s headquarters. To manage such a huge temple, one needed an equivalently large number of people, and like this, the orphans could deepen their faith while working for the church, and would be later despatched to the other countries to serve as bishops or sisters.

The man had already captured three such young girls, and they had huddled together, trembling, because he had a knife.

“If you won’t open the treasury, maybe I’ll dispose of these brats one after the other. I wonder how many of them you can hold out for, pope-sama?”

With an evil smirk, the man grabbed one of the girls and held the edge of his knife to her throat.

“…Please wait! Don’t harm those children any more…”

“I won’t listen to that. Open it or not, which one will it be?”

The man slid the blade of his knife across the girl’s cheek, creating a straight, red line, which started bleeding.

“…P-Pope-sama…”

“Huhuhu. Should the neck be next? There’s still two others anyway.”

The man moved the knife from the girl’s cheek to her neck.

“Ugh… A-all r-right…”

Clenching his hands tightly into a fist, the pope decided to open the treasury.

The girls were tied up and simply left there on the ground, and with the pope at the front, the men headed to the treasury.

Since the temple was quiet in the dead of night, their footsteps as they walked down the corridor were all they heard.

A few minutes of walking later, the door of the treasury came into sight.

The temple’s treasury was strictly managed, and it could only be unlocked by the pope inputting his magical power into a crystal in the door.

During the ceremony of the change from one pope to the next, they would register their magical power.

If anyone else tried to forcibly open the door, an alarm would ring out, and the temple guards would come rushing over.

“Come on, open it quickly. If you don’t, those girls from earlier will be… you understand?”

“A-all r-right… I’m opening it…”

The pope reached up to the crystal with a shaking hand and let his magical power flow into it. Simultaneously, with a loud click and a bang, the door was unlocked.

“Hey, it’s open. Let’s go in, quickly.”

“Yeah, yeah,” said one of the men while opening the door, revealing the inside overflowing with treasure, books, and jewellery.

“Damn, this’s amazing. With this much, I could live my whole life just playing around.”

“Who cares, look for our objective.”

“…All right.”

One of them held his knife to the pope’s back, while the other two went inside the treasury, looking around.

“What is your objective…?”

Asked the pope weakly, to which the man put his hand on his chin and thought for a bit.

“I guess it’s fine. Our objectives are the ‘Summoning Jewels’. They’re here, aren’t they?”

“W-what!? T-that’s…”

The pope’s eyes widened in shock at their unexpected objective. He had thought the thieves were aiming for the treasure. However, if they left with the Summoning Jewels, which were of utmost importance to the Marineford religion, it would be terrible.

“Heeey. There’s an important-looking box here. See, and it’s contents are jewel-like. This is probably it.”

“Yeah, true that. We’ve found our objective then… what the heck’s this?”

Rummaging through the treasury, another jewel-box on the floor caught the two men’s eyes. Perhaps its contents were even more important than the summoning jewels, as there was also a chain wrapped around it.

Anyone would think it was important upon seeing it.

“If it’s just this much, we can take it with us, and the client will also be happy, right? We might get an extra tip.”

“Sure. We can take this much with us.”

The two men put the two boxes in Magic Bags, also putting in other treasures.

“Taking this much as a bonus is quite reasonable.”

The two men rejoined the pope and their comrade waiting by the entrance.

“Did you find our objective?”

“Of course. We also got some extra stuff.”

The man who had been pointing his knife at the pope nodded with a slightly dumbfounded expression.

“Alright, then we’re done with what we needed to do. All that’s left is…”

The man grinned, and stabbed the pope in the back with his knife.

“Ugh… guha…”

The pope spat out blood, collapsing.

“Hey, he can use healing magic, so make sure to properly get rid of him, okay?”

One of the other men also pulled out a knife from his pocket, and stabbed the pope again to make sure he was indeed dead.

“Now, if we return back home, it’s a life of playing about for us. Let’s go back quick.”

“Yeah, we’re clear until tomorrow. Let’s escape now.”

Leaving the dead pope lying on the floor, the men covered entirely in black disappeared from the temple.

The next day. The priest who went to the pope’s room to help him discovered the tied-up children there, and the incident was exposed.

The pope was found stabbed to death in front of the half-open treasury door, causing an uproar in the Holy Country of Marineford, and the information spread to the other countries all at once.
