Volume 7 Chapter 3: Escort Mission

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

One week after it had been decided that Cain would be heading to the Holy Country of Marineford. A number of church knights and adventurers would be accompanying the bishop to Marineford as bodyguards.

“Yo, Cain. Long time no see!”

“You idiot!! Don’t talk to a margrave-sama like that!!”

It was Claude who called out to Cain casually, and Lina who hit him on the head for doing so. Behind them were Milly and Nina, smiling.

Three groups of adventurers, twelve in total, would be accompanying the bishop to the Holy Country of Marineford alongside other bodyguards. The country would be paying the adventurers, and during a meeting with the guild, Cain had suggested Claude and co. as trustworthy adventurers, and they had been chosen.

As power-wise, Claude and Lina were A-Rank, and Milly and Nina were both B-Rank, they got permission without much hassle. And especially with their achievement of protecting the princess during the attack incident in Ilstin, the four were quickly approved by the king.

“Claude-san! Long time no see. I’m glad you accepted the request.”

“Weeeell. It was a designated request from the Kingdom, and I heard you’d also be here, so there’s no way I can’t accept it, is there?”

Rubbing his head where it had been hit, Claude smiled, and Cain smiled back at him.

“Cain…-sama? It has been a long time. I’m glad to see you’re doing well.”

“Long time no see, Cain.”

Milly was confused on how to treat Cain, who was now the head of a higher-ranking noble family, while Nina’s expression didn’t change at all, as always.

“I’m coming along as an adventurer this time, so just call me Cain, as you have up until now. I’d appreciate that.”

Cain would be accompanying them as an adventurer. Claude’s group of four and Cain had accepted the request as a temporary party of five.

Milly breathed a sigh of relief at Cain’s unchanged attitude.

“Got it. I thought you might start acting like a higher-ranked noble due to becoming one. Well, I’ll just call you Cain then, as I have until now.”

“Mhm, that’s a relief.”

“Let’s introduce ourselves to the other members too for the time being.”

Claude and Cain then went around the other adventurer parties who would be escorting the bishop and greeted them.

As Cain was hiding his standing as a noble as much as he could while accompanying them, when Claude introduced him, the other adventurers made unconvinced faces that said ‘Why’s this kid here?’, but the other adventurer parties’ leaders didn’t give any dissenting opinions, since it was Claude introducing him.

When everything was ready and the signal to depart was about to be given, the bishop called Cain over.

“Cain-sama. Could you please ride in the carriage with me. I am terribly sorry for you having to ride in the same carriage as the likes of me though…”

The bishop said apologetically, bowing.

“No, Bishop-sama, please don’t worry about it. I’m escorting you as an adventurer. I’m hiding the fact that I’m a noble too.”

“Even if you say that…”

Claude gave the bishop, who had an apologetic look on his face, a helping hand.

“Cain, I don’t mind if you go in the carriage with the Bishop-sama. If something happens, you can always just get out. And you can stay vigilant of your surroundings even from inside the carriage, can’t you.”

“…Got it. Then, Bishop-sama. I’ll be joining you as a bodyguard.”

Cain also got in the bishop’s carriage, and the party departed.

They would be heading to the Holy Country of Marineford via a number of villages and towns.

The town of Silbesta, governed by Count Ragnaf, which Cain had passed through when welcoming Hinata, was also among them. Remembering the past, Cain smiled bitterly.

Ragnaf, an enthusiastic believer and Marinefordian, had zealously spoken about Marinefordism while Cain had stayed there. He had often spoken for so long that it had become unpleasant.

“…Ah, it won’t be a problem if the Bishop-dono is there…”

“What about me…?”

Sitting next to Cain, the bishop reacted to his monologue.

“Nothing, it’s just that Silbesta is on the way to the Holy Country of Marineford, and Count Ragnaf, who governs the town is quite the zealous believer. So if you could be the one who talks to him, Bishop-sama…”

“Count Ragnaf, eh. I’ve heard about him being a zealous believer. Of course I’ll deal with him for you.”

The bishop nodded energetically, smiling.

Relieved that he wouldn’t have to taste the same suffering as his previous time there, Cain used Search, staying on alert.

The party proceeded down the highway without anything happening. Thanks to the fact that the adventurers’ guild usually gave out requests for monster suppression on the highways, they eventually arrived in Silbesta without having fought any monsters.

As they had been contacted beforehand, soldiers had lined up by Silbesta’s entrance, with Count Ragnaf waiting in their very centre to welcome the bishop’s party.

Riding a horse, Count Ragnaf led the way to his mansion. Honestly, Cain thought that it would have been fine for Ragnaf to wait for them in front of his mansion, but he didn’t say so, since the bishop seemed quite impressed by his welcome to the town.

The whole town was overflowing with a welcoming mood, and residents were standing on both sides of the road, waving.

“Bishop-dono, this is an amazing welcome, isn’t it…”

“It’s my first time receiving such a warm welcome in Esfort. Even though I’m the head of the church here in Esfort, such a welcome even makes me uncomfortable.”

The carriage eventually arrived at the mansion, passing through the welcoming inhabitants.
