Cain had flown ahead and blocked their escape path, but the bandits’ faces showed a slight ray of hope. Earlier, they had been repelled by stupidly strong adventurers, but standing in front of them now was just one boy who hadn’t even come of age yet.
It was quite obvious who should be escaping here.
The bandits had no fear of Cain, who had only cast magic from the coachman’s seat.
“It’s just the brat. How’d he get here before us… Well, we can dispose of him if he’s alone. Let’s go!”
The remaining bandits ran towards Cain at the man’s words. The ones who had thrown away their swords earlier in flight clenched their fists, or took out knives from their pockets. The ones who still had their swords readied those.
There were still nearly twenty bandits remaining, so they thought Cain would run away.
However, their hopes were crushed with just one swing of Cain’s sword.
Just one swing. With just that, a blade of air hit the bandits.
Cain wasn’t going to kill all of them, so he aimed for their legs when he swung his sword, but the approaching bandits’ bottom halves were cut off one after the other.
The half running at the front collapsed, blood flowing from their legs that had nothing below their knees.
“Guaaa… he’s a monster too… damnit!”
The uninjured bandits lost their will to fight, and threw both their weapons and themselves down on the ground.
Cain sheathed his sword, waiting for backup to arrive.
While he was doing that, he closed the wounds of the ones who were still alive even after missing limbs with magic, and tied up the ones who were uninjured.
The bandits seemed not to have thought an escort would be full of such monsters, and sank to the ground, devoid of power.
Once he had tied them all up, Claude and the others arrived, guarding the carriage.
“Oh, Cain. So things went well. There’s more of them alive than I was expecting.”
“We don’t have to kill them needlessly, and I thought that with more people, we might get more information.”
“That’s true. Let’s leave the questioning to the temple knights. It wasn’t in our request, after all.”
“Yeah.”
Claude and Cain left the questioning to the temple knights and took a break.
All the adventurers sat down in a circle, and Claude began talking.
“Those bandits’ weapons were all uniform. They weren’t bandits. They had backing from somewhere. Not to mention many of them had movements one wouldn’t expect of bandits.”
Bandits often attacked without planning, but the bandits in this attack had been quite well-ordered. Even if their movements hadn’t been all that quick, Claude and the others thought that the people in charge had had at least some skill too.
“It’d be nice if they spoke during the questioning… We don’t know what might happen on the way to the holy capital, so we guards’ll have to stay sharp.”
Agreeing with Claude, Lina continued on.
“Well, with Cain here, we’ll be fine no matter what happens.”
“Mhm, Cain is invincible.”
Milly and Nina didn’t seem really worried.
“But still, I thought he was just a kid, but Cain’s strong. I know now why you trust him so much, Claude. We could just leave the whole guard duty to him.”
“You said it. And when all’s said and done, he’s an S-Rank adventurer, even stronger than me! Ow!”
“Claude! That’s a secret… although it’s too late now…”
Lina hit Claude on the head for being so loose-lipped, and the adventurers, who had not known Cain’s rank, were stunned.
Cain thought they were trustworthy people, so he had no intention of hiding it, but he still smiled bitterly.
“You’re kidding.”
“I thought he was just a kid; I’m glad I didn’t pick a fight with him.”
“No wonder he’s been travelling in the carriage with the Bishop-sama.”
“I thought so.”
It was a good thing that the adventurers had refrained from complaining about him due to knowing he was an acquaintance of Claude’s.
They glanced at Cain with relieved expressions.
“I wasn’t trying to hide it, but still, sorry. It was a request from His Majesty and since the Bishop-sama is an acquaintance of mine…”
Cain was only participating as an escort this time as an adventurer.
He was not going to reveal his status as the head of a noble family. He had made sure to remind Claude and Lina about that first, so he doubted Claude would talk about that.
As they continued chatting, a temple knight hurriedly ran up to Cain and the others.
“Sorry for making you wait. I’ll just explain. We questioned them, but their leader died in the first fight. His right-hand-man survived, but during questioning, he swallowed poison that had been planted in his teeth and died. And that’s not all the problems either…”
The temple knight’s expression darkened. He frowned, gritting his teeth, his hand balled into a fist.
“…The bandits’ leader’s right-hand-man –––– was a temple knight.”
At the unexpected, no, expected situation, Cain and the others’ faces hardened at once.
