Volume 8 Chapter 4: Departure

Since they would be going to the Beast Kingdom of Kermes from the town of Misinga by ship, Cain and a number of knights and deacons dispatched by the church had gathered there.

The sailing ship anchored in the harbour was of medium size; according to Hagnes, while they also had larger ships, he had come to Esfort in a faster, medium-sized one due to it being an emergency.

Foodstuffs and the like had already been purchased in Misinga and loaded onto the ship, and now all that was left was departure.

“Cain-dono, make sure you return safely.”

“Yes, of course.”

Count Legant, the lord of the Misinga territory was also there at the harbour, and he and Cain shook hands firmly.

While flying would actually be faster for Cain than taking a ship, if he went alone, Kermes wouldn’t know who he was or how to properly treat him, so he had to go together with Hagnes.

Cain finished saying his goodbyes, then boarded the ship.

“Depaaaarture!”

The ropes connecting the ship to the jetty were undone, and with the sails stretching out, the ship slowly began moving.

It was his first time on a ship as Cain, but he had been on boats many times before in his previous life, so Cain wasn’t scared. However, the knights and people from the church were terrified.

And so, the ship headed out to sea.

Cain was guided to the highest-class guest room by Hagnes.

“This will be your room, Cain-dono. We will be having a meeting soon, so I will show you the way there.”

Walking behind Hagnes, they passed through a doorway, and found themselves in a spacious conference room. There were already several people there, and when Cain sat down, the man who was likely the captain pointed at a map of the sea and began talking.

“We’ll be going along this route as per the nautical chart. As for how long it’ll take, it depends on how the wind is, but it should be in around a week.”

Sailing ships were widespread in this world, and if there was no wind, they couldn’t really go far. However, since there was a war and they were in a hurry, Cain made a suggestion.

“I can use magic. Won’t we arrive earlier if I use wind magic to make wind blow against the sails?”

“I appreciate the suggestion, but only court magicians or high ranked adventurers can use magic for such long periods of time. Beginner and intermediate magicians will be out of magical power after an hour of generating wind at most.”

The captain rejected Cain’s suggestion. He knew that wind magic was useful, but he also thought Cain wouldn’t be able to maintain it for a longer period of time.

However, Cain didn’t have a normal amount of magical power. He still needed sleep, but continuously using a moderate amount of magic for a long time was quite simple for him.

“That’s not a problem. I’ll send wind to the sails. I can’t do it 24/7, but we’re currently in a race against time. Please let me help as much as I can.”

All Cain could think about was the summoned Hero. The longer its the battle with the powerful Hero and co. dragged on, the more tired Kermes would become.

“Cain-dono, is that all right? If the wind you can create is good, it’ll take shorter for us to arrive. The helmsman will adjust the rudder, so just keep the wind blowing against the sails, all right?”

Once they had finished talking, Cain went up on deck. While there was some wind, it wasn’t very strong, and the ship was sailing along slowly.

Cain raised a wind with magic and made it blow against the sails.

However, this was Cain’s magic. It was not something from an ordinary magic user. Their speed rose swiftly. And due to the ship’s speed having risen, huge splashes of water were making their ways onto the deck. The shaking got more and more intense. The hull began creaking, and the helmsman shouted to Cain in a panicked voice.

“The ship’ll break at this speed!!”

“All right! Then-”

Cain placed his hand on the deck and let magical power flow into the ship.

The now-hardened ship stopped creaking. Satisfied, Cain resumed making his magic hit the sails. The helmsman frowned, but remembering that getting to Kermes in the shortest time possible was their utmost priority, he turned his gaze forwards.

The sun was sinking now, and Cain, having finished his duties for the day, was sitting opposite Hagnes in his guest room, sipping black tea.

“I must say, you truly have an impressive amount of magical power, Cain-dono. You kept it up until the evening and yet you show no signs of being tired.”

“No no, I’m just desperate to help the Beast Kingdom of Kermes as soon as possible.”

There had been no problems for the sailors, who were used to being on ships, but knights and people from the church from Esfort had all become seasick, and they had to have healing magic cast on them while Cain was taking a break.

As even Hagnes, who was somewhat used to ships, had become seasick and holed himself up in his room, Cain had hurried there to cast healing magic on him.

“It seems we’ll arrive earlier than I thought. I spoke with the captain earlier, and he said that at this rate, we’ll arrive in two days, give or take.”

“Really…? I’d like to get there as fast as possible. The more people capable of using healing magic we have there, the more people can be saved.”

There had been many victims already by the time Hagnes had headed to Esfort for aid. Many of them due to the Hero and his companions. It was unclear what world they had been summoned from, but Cain thought that the Hero who succeeded Yuuya should not join wars between countries.

From the next morning onwards, the ship made good progress due to the magic, and land came into view before the sun had even sunk.

“Kermes has come into view! We arrived in two days! Keep it up!”

““““Woooh!””””

The sailors responded to the first mate’s shout.

While they had planned on arriving in a week, thanks to Cain’s efforts, they had safely arrived in the Beast Kingdom of Kermes in just two days.
