Chapter 1236: Ghostly Array

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Gui Lingzi contemplated pursuing Qu Lin momentarily, but ultimately decided against it.

Compared with a Gold Devouring Immortal, he was more drawn to Han Li.

After all, it had been confirmed that the Heaven Controlling Vial was in Han Li's possession.

In this situation, Lan Yan was in a very awkward position.

She was a Nine Origins Temple disciple, yet she was helping an outsider invade her own sect. However, Han Li was her only hope for saving Lan Yuanzi, so she had no choice but to help him.

"A traitor like you deserves to die even more than all those Reincarnation Palace scoundrels outside!" Gui Lingzi harrumphed coldly as his gaze fell upon Lan Yan.

Lan Yan had no way to defend herself, so she could only bite her lip in silence.

At this point, she had no choice but to follow Han Li, whether that be to salvation or a bitter end.

In the face of a mid-Great Encompassment cultivator, Han Li wanted to avoid a conflict if at all possible, so he cupped his fist in a salute as he said, "I'm not here to cause trouble, Senior, I'm just here to recover a spirit pet of mine. Right now, the temple is under attack, so why not let me be and go after those who truly pose a threat? I saw many Reincarnation Palace cultivators as I was coming through the Golden Jade Pass earlier."

Gui Lingzi took a cold glance at him and offered no response. It seemed like he was pondering what he was going to do with these two trapped intruders.

Han Li was naturally aware that he most likely wasn't going to be able to talk his way out of this situation, so as he was speaking, he was also scouring his surroundings with his Infernal Devilish Eyes while also secretly channeling his immortal spiritual power, searching for an opportunity to escape.

As his gaze roamed over the surrounding stone hall, he could see that the walls were riddled with strange patterns that resembled troughs of blood embedded deep into them.

After walking a lap around the array, Gui Lingzi suddenly made a hand seal while chanting an incantation, and his voice began to echo around the stone hall.

As his voice rang out, a sharp screech sounded within Han Li's mind, followed by a sense of sluggishness.

At the same time, he began to hear the sound of flowing water around the stone hall, accompanied by a bloody odor permeating through the air.

Are these the effects of his soul law powers?

Han Li felt like something wasn't quite right.

He hurriedly channeled his Spirit Refinement Technique, while an outer garment of golden lightning appeared over his body, instantly eradicating all of the strands of black light that were clinging to him and binding him into place.

At this point, Lan Yan's eyes had already become completely glazed over, and her face was twisted in agony.

Han Li's brows furrowed slightly upon seeing this, and a streak of translucent light shot out of his glabella to strike Lan Yan's glabella, while several arcs of golden lightning also sprang out of his body to dispel the strands of black light around her.

She slumped to the ground with a pained moan, and a hint of lucidity had returned to her eyes.

"How incompetent do those Heavenly Court immortal envoys have to be to have allowed you to cultivate the Spirit Refinement Technique to this level? Then again, I suppose this is a blessing for me," Gui Lingzi said as a peculiar grin appeared on his face, and it was unclear whether he was speaking to Han Li or himself.

As his voice trailed off, he gave himself a nod, as if he had just made some type of decision.

Han Li didn't know what Gui Lingzi had in mind for him, but the smile on his face clearly indicated that it wasn't going to be anything good.

All of a sudden, he noticed that Gui Lingzi had already ceased his chanting, but his voice was still echoing throughout the stone hall, and it was compounding upon itself, growing louder and louder.

Furthermore, the bloody odor in the air had also become even more potent.

"It's over for us, Fellow Daoist Han... We've entered Holy Envoy Gui Lingzi's Myriad Spiritfall Immortal Array," Lan Yan said in a despairing voice.

A grim look appeared on Han Li's face upon hearing this, and he looked around to discover that countless sinister, ghostly faces had appeared on the surrounding black stone pillars, and they were packed together extremely tightly in a trypophobic nightmare.

Some of the faces belonged to humans, while others were more beastly in appearance, and all of them had their eyes and mouths wide open in rage and horror.

The voices that were compounding upon each other were coming directly from the mouths of these ghostly faces, and a sense of foreboding welled up in Han Li's heart upon seeing this.

These voices were like snowflakes falling from the sky, and if he were to allow these accumulating snowflakes to compound into a full blown avalanche, then even his Spirit Refinement Technique most likely wasn't going to be able to save him.

"Seal off your hearing and destroy these pillars!" he yelled in an urgent manner, and Lan Yan immediately did as she was told.

However, even after she sealed her ear canals with her immortal spiritual power, she discovered that the voices hadn't been silenced in the slightest. Instead, it was as if they were ringing out directly in her mind.

This was naturally quite alarming, but she had no time to dwell on this as she summoned a blue longsword before lashing out at the black stone pillar that was closest to her.

Gui Lingzi made no attempt to stop her, merely looking on with a cold smile.

This was naturally not an encouraging sign for Lan Yan, but she still had to continue, nonetheless, and her longsword transformed into hundreds of streaks of blue swordlight that struck the black stone pillar in a torrential barrage.

However, the collisions were completely silent, and the streaks of blue swordlight vanished into the stone pillar as if they had struck a pillar of quicksand.

Before Lan Yan had a chance to process this, a loud commotion suddenly rang out not far away from her.

She hurriedly turned to discover that Han Li had summoned several dozen flying swords with arcs of golden lightning flashing over them, and they released countless streaks of golden swordlight that rained down upon the dozens of stone pillars up ahead.

The golden lightning was so formidable that it was as if a bout of divine tribulation had fallen upon this place directly from the heavens, threatening to annihilate the entire space.

Gui Lingzi's expression changed slightly upon seeing this, clearly having failed to anticipate this turn of events.

In the next instant, a deafening boom rang out, and the entire stone hall was inundated by a vast expanse of golden lightning.

Han Li's Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords succeeded where Lan Yan had failed, destroying all of the black stone pillars in their paths, but instead of exploding into chunks of stone, they imploded into clouds of ghostly mist that instantly spread through the hall.

Shrill shrieks and ghastly howls were ringing out incessantly from within the ghostly mist, and countless malicious ghosts were flying out of the mist, with seemingly no end to their numbers.

Lan Yan was horrified to see this, but in direct contrast, a look of elation had appeared in Han Li's eyes.

He swept both sleeves through the air, releasing a web of golden lightning that extended in all directions to form a barrage of lightning spears, instantly eradicating countless ghostly creatures at once.

This seems like a waste, Han Li thought to himself with slightly furrowed brows.

Right at this moment, the wall directly up ahead suddenly began to glow with dazzling, crimson light, and a massive, ghostly face appeared over its surface before opening its cavernous mouth.

A huge, crimson vortex instantly appeared in its oral cavity, sucking in all of the golden lightning released by Han Li's Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords.

The Cardinal Heavenly Lightning in Han Li's Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords should've been the bane of all ghostly entities, but the tables had suddenly been turned somehow.

Han Li was quite alarmed to see this, and he hurriedly reached out to try and withdraw his Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords, but a long, crimson tongue suddenly shot out of the vortex in the mouth of the giant, ghostly face like lightning, sweeping up most of the Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords in the blink of an eye before dragging them toward the vortex.

Han Li was only able to retrieve a small portion of his Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords, which combined as one before landing in his grasp, while the rest were sucked into the crimson vortex, and he was no longer able to sense them.

Without the golden lightning from the Azure Bamboo Cloudswarm Swords standing in their path, the ghostly creatures surging out of the black stone pillars instantly converged toward Han Li and Lan Yan once again.

The latter hurriedly swept a sleeve through the air upon seeing this, conjuring a water-attribute spirit domain that was over ten thousand feet in diameter.

As soon as the ghostly creatures entered the spirit domain, it was as if they had plunged headfirst into a vast sea, and they were stopped in their tracks by waves of turbulent, blue ripples.

However, as more and more ghostly creatures surged into the spirit domain, it was quickly overwhelmed, placing Lan Yan in a dire situation.

Right at this moment, Han Li's time spirit domain unfurled to encompass all of the oncoming ghostly creatures.

The ghostly entities were able to overwhelm Lan Yan's spirit domain through sheer numbers, but in Han Li's spirit domain, they were completely rooted to the spot as if they had been reduced to inanimate objects.
