Adam was momentarily unaware that the sky above had been suddenly dotted by countless arrows. But he could, however, feel the strong tension in the air, the faint vibrations traveling across the ground as the army shifted ever so slightly.
And it wasn’t long before his Sphere of Resonance picked up on the expansive volley of arrows.
He didn’t make his move yet, though. He stood by the command tent with Goro and the other top officers. He could feel that they all wore dark, grim looks on their faces.
War, he mused.
This wasn’t his first time participating in one. He had fought in a war back in the Southern Federation. A war that took place between the four great races and the orcs.
Come to think of it...
His lips curled into a bitter smile as he thought, I was indirectly responsible for that war as well.
But this war was on a much larger scale than anything he’d faced before. Even the Battle of Ravenfell could not really be called a "war" in the face of this. It was just a twenty-four-hour battle that was mostly the result of the city’s negligence.
But this... this was something else entirely.
Right at that moment, Goro’s loud voice echoed across the pass:
"Activate the heavenly net!"
"OHHH!!!"
The soldiers of the Tsuitstui army, who were about to engage in battle, consisting entirely of Mana Foundation and Mana Liquefaction Magi, roared at the top of their lungs. Their voices combined and made the air and land tremble.
At once, all of them raised their hands and weaved a set of hand seals. And just before the volley of arrows was about to drown them, they cast a combined spell.
Rank 1 Spell: Grand Shield!
Within mere moments, a wide, translucent barrier made of interconnected hexagonal blocks formed above the entire formation. This was a combined spell cast by more than two thousand Magi, so the scale was massive.
The first volley of shadows struck the Grand Shield. They all shattered on impact, snapping apart or turning to splinters as the condensed mana dispersed the force behind them. More arrows followed, but the barrier held, rippling faintly with every hit while the army beneath remained untouched.
Seconds turned to minutes, yet the volley of arrows never ceased. It had now become evident that there were plenty of men on standby atop the Wall.
Now the question remained...
What would break first? The Grand Shield or the archers of the Tiesha Tang?
The answer was clear.
Both Generals knew that first it would be the Mana Foundation Magi of the Tsuitsui army that would give in. These Magi had low mana reserves, to begin with. It was not possible for them to sustain a spell, despite it being a combined one with other Mana Liquefaction Magi, for so long.
The Tiesha Tang’s General, Han Xun, had plenty of archers to rotate, ensuring that the volley of arrows continued to rain down on his enemy for at least ten more minutes.
But the Venom Dragon also had a plan...
Standing beside the man himself, Adam couldn’t help but wonder as he looked toward Goro:
Now what will you do?
A few moments later, Goro made his move.
He slowly raised his hands, his expression grim. His hands then turned into a shadowy blur as he quickly finished the magical components of his spell. Then he sacrificed a small vial of dark green liquid.
At least, he was ready.
He pointed at the Wall, more specifically, the battlements at the top. A brilliant magic circle lit up on the palm of his hands.
Rank 3 Spell: Spear of Tsuitsui!
A massive spear of dark green poison tore through the sky with a sharp, roaring hiss. It streaked over the Tsuitsui army, leaving a faint toxic trail in its wake. The soldiers below flinched, some ducking instinctively as it passed overhead.
And then...
BAM!
A heartbeat later, the spear slammed into the battlements with a thunderous sound. Even though the archers stopped firing, the Wall was left unharmed.
The moment before Goro’s spell connected, the runic formations on the Wall were activated. In an instant, the Wall was protected by a layer of mana, much like the Tsuitsui army’s Grand Shield.
However, the danger was still not yet resolved.
This was poison the Tiesha Tang was dealing with, after all. Even after the Spear of Tsuitsui had broken apart, the dark green poison still permeated. If nothing was done about it, the poison would descend on the men stationed below.
But how could Han Xun let that happen?
Before Goro’s spell had even reached the Wall, Han Xun had already finished preparing for his own spell.
Rank 3 Spell: Whirlwind!
He then thrust his hands in an upward motion. A violent surge of wind erupted from the palms of his hands. The spiraling column of air roared upwards, catching the drifting cloud of dark green poison before it could descend upon his troops.
The whirlwind expanded, tightening into a controlled vortex that lifted the toxic vapor high above the battlefield. The dark green poison churned inside the spinning wall of wind, held aloft and pushed back towards the sky, keeping the Tiesha Tang soldiers below untouched.
But by the time the poison had been dispersed and the threat fully neutralized, the Tsuitsui army had already surged ahead.
The front lines smashed into the Tiesha Tang forces beneath the Wall, steel clashing against steel, and spells splitting against spells. Shouts, impacts, and the grind of weapons filled the air as both sides were pulled instantly into a brutal, close-quarters melee.
No matter how vicious the unorthodox Tiesha Tang was, its General would not order the archers to keep firing now that both armies were locked in close combat.
And so, the battlefield instantly shifted from ranged exchanges to raw, violent combat within moments.
The Mana Vortex Magi of both armies stayed back, neither side making the first move. It was as if they had reached a silent, mutual understanding that their moment had not yet come.
But that restraint would not last.
Soon, they would step onto the warring stage, and when they did...
Blood and poison would flood the battlefield.
