On the clifftop, things weren’t looking good either.Adam swung his staff at an extremely fast speed, deflecting multiple ice spears aimed at him by the snow creatures.
Around him, already a pile of corpses had formed. Yet there seemed to be no end to the grueling battle.
The foes he was fighting were towering, broad-shouldered, and covered in thick, white fur. Not only were they experts at physical combat thanks to their sturdy bodies, but they were also adept at ice magic.
These creatures, whose faces resembled apes, were utterly livid at the fact that an intruder had not only encroached upon their territory but also butchered so many of their kin.
"Expand," Adam muttered in snaketongue as he swung his staff in a broad arc.
The Staff of Calamity lengthened instantly, its sweeping strike smashing several of the snow creatures aside and clearing a small circle around him.
At last, he had a moment to breathe.
But the reprieve didn’t last long. The wind roared again, carrying with it even more towering beasts. Their white fur blended into the blizzard, their eyes glowing faintly through the veil of snow.
Adam tightened his grip on the staff, his muscles trembling from the cold and exhaustion. More silhouettes emerged from the storm. They were regrouping, and they weren’t going to let him rest for long.
"Damn it!" he cursed under his breath.
There seemed to be no end to these snow creatures. No matter how many creatures Adam killed, more seemed to take their place. And the more he killed, the angrier they became.
If things went on like this, then it would take him a long time to traverse the clifftop and reach the area beyond the Wall. In that moment, he realized that he had to switch tactics.
Instead of remaining hellbent on killing all those who stood in his way, he had to switch his priority to escaping! The monsters on the clifftop were strong to begin with, but with the additional problem of the harsh, brutal climate, things were not looking good for Adam.
Then there were the voices in his head that tried to persuade him into reveling in endless slaughter...
He suddenly burst into a crazed fit of laughter, and quickly made up his mind. He didn’t stay in one spot for more than a heartbeat. Every swing of the Staff of Calamity brought him only a few steps of breathing room before another snow creature lunged at him from the storm.
The youth moved across the frozen plateau in a staggered path, weaving between jagged ice formations and patches of deep snow that threatened to swallow his legs.
Each creature he struck was sent flying away, but more kept closing in from the snowy haze. Their heavy limbs pounded against the ice, their guttural roars blending in with the screaming wind.
Adam fought while backpeddling, sidestepping, shifting his weight, never rooted and never still. Staying still meant being surrounded. Staying still whispered the promise of potential death!
The cold tore at his lungs. The wind pushed at his back and sides, trying to knock him off balance. Even so, he gritted his teeth and forced his body forward, eyes fixated on the faint outline of the Wall’s inner structures far into the distance.
He needed to keep moving. He needed to get off this clifftop. He didn’t know what the situation was like on the ground, but he figured that it wasn’t at all hopeful. The more time he took to traverse the clifftop and reach beyond the Wall, the greater the casualties on the ground.
Every second carried a razor-sharp sense of urgency. The snow creatures were endless, the storm was merciless, and the clock was ticking.
He had to escape.
Now!
***
On the ground, Goro stood in the thick of the enemy swarm, as a tightening ring of Tiesha Tang soldiers pressed in from every direction. His gauntleted fists glowed with corrosive mana, each strike melting armor, flesh, or weapon on contact.
The air around him distorted with dark-green poison as thin streams of venom leaked from his pores, weakening anyone who got too close. He fought fast, way too fast for those around him to follow. Every second mattered.
His expression was hard, marred by a dark sense of urgency. He and his hundred-man elites weren’t here to get bogged down. They needed to crush this thousand-man ambush quickly, break through, and return to the main battlefield before the Tsuitsui frontline collapsed.
Goro’s men mirrored his desperation. They cut down anything in front of them with ruthless efficiency, pushing forward step by step. Each time the enemy faltered, Goro surged ahead, carving a path of escape.
After all, the longer they remain trapped within the encirclement, the worse the situation became. There was no room for hesitation, no room for delay.
The fight dragged on as the light began to fade. Goro and his men pushed through the last pockets of resistance, their movements sharp and efficient despite hours of combat.
By some miracle, as well as the overwhelming advantage of Goro’s poison, the hundred-man squad had lost only sixty soldiers, while the entire thousand-man Tiesha Tang force now lay dead at their feet!
Damn it! The battle took far longer than I had expected, he thought to himself with a grim look on his face.
He knew what could have happened during the time he was away from the main battlefield. In fact, he believed that this was exactly what Han Xun was aiming for.
Breathing hard, clothes torn, and poison still steaming faintly from his gauntlets, Goro wasted no time and led the forty men back towards the main battlefield at full speed.
But when they finally arrived at the battlefield, and the central warfront came into view, they all froze in their tracks.
The main battlefield had shifted into something far worse than before. Its shape, its noise, the position of the two armies.... everything was wrong!
And in that moment, the forty surviving Tsuitsui warrior behind Goro felt a jolt in their chests.
A low, weary horn echoed across the blood-soaked pass, its somber sound cutting through the fading light.
It was the signal... the fourth day of the Battle of Kurogane was over.
But for Goro and his army, there was no sense of relief.
"Fuck!" Goro cursed with anger and frustration in his heart as he rushed to the command tent.
From there, he got a clear view of the main battlefield.
And what he saw... made his heart sink.
