Adam held the bowl of dark red liquid in his hands. Before him lay the pair of eyeballs that he was going to transplant into him.
His following actions would forever change his life. He thought he was ready for it. After all, everything that had happened before had been leading him up to this point.
But suddenly... his hands began to tremble.
He slowly put down the bowl on the ground with shaky breaths.
A simple thought echoed in his mind:
After I consume this potion and transplant this pair of eyes, will I turn into something like that abomination as well?
The very thought scared him.
Based on the vast trove of knowledge he had absorbed, Adam knew that it was a common occurrence in the Greater Universe for Magi to consume the blood of magical beings. In doing so, they would receive certain traits of said magical beings.
In many cases, Magi would find their mana reserves increase. Actually, this was one of the few ways one could increase their reserves. In some cases, they would also inherit the innate abilities of the magical beings.
For example, Paladins could consume the refined blood of a giant and could gain their strength. Magi could transplant the blood of a dragon and inherit their magical abilities.
However, this didn’t mean that they’d turn into giants or dragons. No, they would just gain certain traits of those species.
In order to achieve a complete transformation, however, the process was far more complicated. And in most cases, it would result in the deaths of the Magi or Paladins.
However, the human race had an advantage when it came to acquiring the bloodline of other magical beings.
Among the many races of the Magus Universe, humans stood apart for a single defining trait:
Adaptability.
Where elves were born attuned to mana itself, dwarves shaped the world through forging, and gnomes bent perception through illusions, humans possessed no such narrow specializations.
Instead, their strength lay in their ability to accept change at a level other species simply could not match.
The adaptability manifested most clearly in high-risk magical procedures. Human Magi and Paladins showed an unusually high success rate when transplanting bloodlines from other magical beings into their own bodies.
The human body did not merely tolerate foreign power, it adjusted to it. Even divine or aberrant energies, which would fatally destabilize most races, could sometimes be assimilated by humans given sufficient preparation and will.
As a result, humans who could wield mana were often the only viable candidates for experimental enhancements, grafted organs, or bloodline infusions. In fact, countless forbidden arts from the School of Alteration existed solely because humans could survive them.
Furthermore, human adaptability extended beyond magic into every aspect of mortal life.
More than any other race, humans adjusted to their environments, cultures, and challenges instead of resisting them. They learned quickly, adopted foreign customs with ease, and reshaped their societies when conditions changed.
Physically and mentally, humans evolved in response to prolonged hardship. Unlike elves, dwarves, or gnomes, who refined a single trait, humans changed direction entirely when needed.
Humans were not defined by what they were born as, but by what they could become!
Adam had made the decision knowing the risk, and he had based it on a single fact: he was human.
He understood better than anyone that no other race could survive what he intended to do. Most higher races in the universe would be torn apart by the conflicting nature of this otherworldly power.
But humans were different. Their defining trait was adaptability, the ability to endure, adjust, and integrate what should have been fatal.
Adam banked on that trait completely.
But when the time arrived, he found his resolve wavering. He had fought the abomination and knew it better than most. It was a creature that was not normal by any means.
Although it was powerful, had strange abilities, and had mind-boggling reserves of mana, transplanting its refined blood and eyes would surely change him on a fundamental level.
The process would give him great powers, but the price he would have to pay would also be equally steep.
What the price of attaining such power was, he did not know.
He had concocted the potion using the blood and flesh of the abomination’s severed tendril so that it would help him accommodate the creature’s eyes. Otherwise, his body would not accept the transplant.
But he couldn’t help but wonder:
Will the Five Elemental Codex be able to counter the corruption directly from the source?
If I proceed with the operation, will I lose my humanity?
Will I turn into a ghastly creature after the operation?
I have no knowledge about the abomination’s true origins. Where did it come from? Why was it here? What was its purpose?
Despite not knowing about it, do I truly want to go ahead with this?
Adam was fully aware of how little he actually knew.
The abomination’s origins were unclear, its nature not fully understood. He had no way of predicting how its blood and eyes would interact with his body, how deeply they would alter him, or what consequences would surface in the future. There were dangers he could not identify, let alone prepare for.
But there was one thing he understood with absolute clarity...
This opportunity would never come again.
The abomination was gone, its existence severed from this world. Knowledge like this was not something a rational Magus would discard simply out of fear. Adam weighed the unknown risks, and the choice slowly became inevitable.
He inhaled deeply and steadied his resolve. He accepted that the transformation would change him. That some part of what he was might be lost, reshaped, or even permanently altered. He accepted that the costs would be high and that regret might come later.
But hesitation now would mean turning away from a chance that could define his future.
Adam arrived at the depths of his spirit sea, his gaze landing on the giant gray dragon slumbering peacefully on one of the leaves of the lotus.
He smiled fondly at his little brother and then gently positioned the young dragon at the center of the lotus, amid the white petals. Then he willed the lotus to close itself, fully enclosing Valerian.
"If something happens to me," Adam began, his eyes full of love and warmth. "I hope you can carry on my dream, little Val. If I truly die in the process, then what I leave behind for you is... "
He paused as he gazed at the Eternal Soul Lotus.
"The greatest legacy of the Magus Universe."
