Chapter 1440: Three Conditions

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Maximillian and Marlow froze.

Especially the former. He had been trying to break through the bottleneck for several years now, but no matter how hard he tried, he always felt like something was missing.

He never expected anyone from the Sovereign Union to help him. Although Amberfall held a valuable place in the Union, due to internal politics, some parties had prevented Maximillian from advancing to the Mana Core Rank.

After all, it was in their interests to have a weaker Magus sitting on the throne of Ignisra, resulting in them getting far more benefits than they would have received if the King was a Mana Core Magus.

Furthermore, the elusive Mana Core Rank held profound arcane secrets. Such occult knowledge was tightly guarded by the many smaller factions within the Union. They would only allow those tied to them — or under their control — to access such insights and form a mana core.

Of course, the Union would never have proactively prevented Maximillian from advancing. If he could become a Mana Core Magus on his own, as Bunosilo had, they would welcome it.

If not... they truly did not care either way. To them, restricting power mattered far more than collective stability.

"My Lord, you..." Maximillian finally managed to muster a few words.

But soon, a wave of rationality washed over his tempted state of mind. His expression turned solemn, and he asked, "What do you expect in return?"

Huh, would you look at that? Adam was genuinely surprised.

He thought to himself in approval, I’ve known people who would betray even those closest to them just to grasp the secret to become a Mana Core Magus.

Yet, here you are... alerted by something that seemed too good to be true.

As expected of Anna’s father, I suppose...

"You are a wise man," said Bunosilo with a slight nod.

Maximillian and even Marlow tensed up. And when they recalled Anna’s recorded message, they couldn’t help but assume the worst.

"What I’m about to tell you concerns not just the safety of Amberfall or Europa, but the entire world," Bunosilo said in a grim voice.

Before the father and son had time to process his words, Bunosilo had already dropped an informational bombshell on them.

"Nothing is as it seems, and what you think is the truth is concealed under layers of masterfully crafted lies," the old man began in a solemn voice.

"The Sovereign Union, the Haynam Empire, the Twilight Brotherhood, the Cult of Bones... there is more than meets the eye."

Maximillian’s ruby eyes trembled.

Isn’t that... similar to what Anna said! He thought in alarm.

Just what is going on in this world?!

Bunosilo continued, "I’m someone who isn’t deeply dependent on the Union. As a relative bystander, I can see far more than people who are entangled with the politics of Europa can perceive.

"Maximillian Fireborne, I have observed you for many years and have come to the realization that you are someone who can be trusted. And so, I have decided to help you become a Mana Core Magus so that you can become my ally."

"But..." The King subconsciously gulped.

"Ask no more." Busolino shook his head adamantly.

The old man then raised three fingers and said in a grave tone, "In return for helping you form your mana core, I have three conditions."

He paused for a moment, then continued:

"First, you will deny my involvement in your ascension to the Mana Core Rank. If others ask, you will tell them you did it on your own after gaining enlightenment. Two, after tonight, we will pretend like none of this ever happened. And lastly..."

Bunosilo’s eyes narrowed. "You will tell me everything you know about the Twilight Brotherhood’s presence in Europa."

The old man lowered his hand and finally concluded. "If you agree to my conditions, we will swear a mana oath, and I will help you take the next step. If not... then I will erase both your memories of me from tonight, and it’ll be as though none of this ever happened."

Needless to say, both Maximillian and Marlow were utterly stunned.

Why would Bunosilo go so far to conceal his involvement?

Why would he ask them to pretend like he didn’t help them?

If Bunosilo truly helped Maximillian form the mana core, then the latter would be forever indebted to him. So why would the old man not take advantage of this situation?

And lastly...

"My Lord, the Twilight Brotherhood... why are you so..." Maximillian couldn’t help but ask.

However, Bunosilo simply shook his head.

The King thought of the old man’s claim that there was far more to the ancient powers of this world than met the eye. He couldn’t help but wonder whether Bunosilo was already planning to act against the Cult’s secret infiltration of the Brotherhood!

Maximillian inhaled deeply and closed his eyes. The conditions laid out by the old man were ones he could readily accept. Yet there was still this gnawing suspicion lingering in his mind that he stood to gain far more from this bargain than he should, and that seemed too good to be true.

"I have only one question," he said at last.

Bunosilo gestured for him to continue.

"Why are you doing this?" Maximillian asked in a solemn voice.

Even Marlow cast an incredulous gaze at him. He couldn’t help but wonder why his father wouldn’t accept such great terms.

Bunosilo deeply looked at the King, then heaved a light sigh.

"A long time ago, someone from your family saved my life," Bunosilo said with a reminiscent look in his eyes. "Without them, I would be nothing. I can never hope to repay that kindness, so this is the least I can do."

Maximillian and Marlow were left stunned. Naturally, they assumed that one of the Fireborne ancestors had aided Bunosilo in the past. They would have never guessed, even in their wildest imagination, that the person he spoke of was none other than Anna.

"So that is why you chose to come to Amberfall of your own accord and guard us from the shadows," Maximillian murmured with a grateful look in his eyes. "Thank you..."

He then placed a hand on his chest and offered a deep bow.

"Lord Bunosilo, I accept your conditions."
