Chapter 1446: Talent For Acting

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Bunosilo soared through the air like a shooting star, his ascent swift and decisive.

The moment he reached the open sky, far above the bustle of Amberfall, his gaze locked onto Osbert. His murky eyes immediately narrowed as he was drawn to the foul, deathly aura rolling around him like a shroud.

"Necromancer!" Without hesitation, the old man struck him.

A beam of pure mana surged forth from his hands in a blinding flash, tearing through the clouds towards its target. But Osbert reacted at once, twisting away and retreating in a burst of dark mana, narrowly evading the attack as he put distance between them.

The necromancer’s expression instantly darkened as he saw Maximillian and Bunosilo hover together.

So this has been his plan all along, the necromancer thought to himself.

Maximillian knew he wouldn’t be able to take me on all by himself, so he teleported us to the skies above Amberfall.

And then, all he needed to do was flare his aura to catch Bunosilo’s attention. Damn it!

While Osbert was cursing his fortune, on the other side, the two Magi from the Union wore solemn looks. However, one of them was more startled than serious.

Bunosilo glanced at Maximillian with a clearly surprised look on his face.

"You... formed the mana core?" His tone carried unmasked incredulity.

A moment later, his murky eyes gleamed with approval. "To have done so all on your own... well done! Congratulations, Maximillian."

He, more than anyone, knew how difficult it was to form a mana core, especially so without any proper guidance. That was why he was full of genuine praise.

Maximillian found the corner of his lips twitching. In that moment, all he could think was:

Lord Bunosilo, your talent for acting truly amazes me!

He recalled the mana oath he had sworn with the old man, and said with a faint smile.

"Thank you," he said. "Now, shall we deal with the cultist?"

"Cultist..." Bunosilo coldly murmured, shifting his attention back to Osbert, who was warily eyeing the two.

"Fireborne," he continued in a grim voice. "Your mana hasn’t yet stabilized from the advancement. So you provide support. Let me deal with the brunt of his attacks."

"Understood." Maximillian nodded as he retrieved a Grade 4 artifact, a sword, from his storage ring. With a simple hand seal, the blade was lit ablaze.

"Damn Firebornes!" Osbert spat venomously.

He despised the fact that House Fireborne was so wealthy that they could afford to buy several Grade 4 artifacts despite not having a single Mana Core Magus in their family until now.

"Curse you all!" Osbert roared as his hands turned into a blur and he quickly tried to summon his undead servants.

"Not so quick!" In the blink of an eye, Bunosilo arrived before the necromancer and pointed a palm at him.

Mana surged from his core, and he cast a devastating attack.

Rank 4 Spell: Wind Force!

Wind magic erupted from the old man’s palm and ruthlessly pushed Osbert into the distance, preventing him from casting necromancy magic.

In the next moment, Maximillian appeared beside the cultist and, with a vicious glint blazing in his ruby eyes, he swung his flaming sword in a brutal diagonal arc.

A wave of searing fire roared outwards, tearing through the air like a burning crescent!

At the last possible moment, Osbert reacted, conjuring a whip of interlocking bones that snapped outwards, cracking against the blade and barely halting the wave of flames.

Bunosilo reacted almost instantly, weaving a set of hand seals and quickly casting several wind-based projectiles at the necromancer, not giving him any chance to cast magic.

As he did so, the old man pushed Osbert away from the city. This was imperative as he would not allow the fallout of their battle to endanger the people below.

"Keep pressure on him, Maximillian!" Bunosilo roared in a grim voice. "We must not allow him to summon his undead!"

The King, of course, knew how devastating a necromancer could be. Fighting one was akin to fighting an army. He could not allow the cultist to unleash his horde of undead onto the capital.

Bunosilo moved with relentless ferocity, spell after spell tearing free from his hands in rapid succession. Magical lights split the sky, each spell layered atop the last, leaving Osbert no room to breathe.

Meanwhile, Maximillian hovered nearby, his presence solemn and resolute. Waves of fire and steel followed Bunosilo’s attacks, sealing off escape routes and striking whenever Osbert faltered, forcing him to divert mana just to stay aloft.

His display of carefully crafted battle tactics showed his years of experience in the art of combat. This was a King who not only knew how to govern, but also fight his own bloody battles.

Driven steadily onto the defensive, Osbert had no choice but to retreat again and again, raising shields of bone and necrotic mana to survive the onslaught.

Each step back pulled the battle farther from Amberfall, the city shrinking below as the clash of the Mana Core Magi was dragged into the open skies, where no innocents would be caught in the aftermath.

Although Maximillian and Bunosilo had managed to drive Osbert away from the city, little did they know... a veteran necromancer like Osbert always had a contingency plan in place.

***

Far below, the people of Amberfall looked up as sudden flashes of light bloomed across the twilight sky.

Very soon, their gasps turned to excited cheers and laughter.

"Look! Look!" A child cried out, pulling his mother’s sleeve. "The fireworks started already!"

"That’s earlier than last year," said a merchant with a light chuckle.

"Haha! They never disappoint," another said with a merry laugh.

A pair of sailors raised their cups. "Hah! Leave it to the royal family to outdo themselves!"

"Founder’s Day just keeps getting grander!"

Music continued, lanterns swayed, and the streets erupted in cheers and applause. No one imagined that those dazzling lights were not celebrations at all, but the distant clash of Mana Core Magi.

A devastating battle unfolded far beyond their sight, while the city rejoiced, blissfully unaware.

Standing in one of the city’s main crowded squares, Magus Nilrem gazed up at the distant battle unfolding in the twilight sky as he curled his mustache upward.

Good, they’ve drawn the fight away from the city, he thought with satisfaction.

He lowered his gaze and calmly scanned the surrounding districts, his senses brushing past the streets and alleys alike.

Now then...

Let’s see how Marlow is handling Burne Ward’s associates and the remaining small-fry cultists still lurking within the capital.

A moment later, his pupils constricted.

His heart sank when he learned there was yet another hidden danger lurking within the city!
