Vaelor Vornis was absolutely livid at being accused of treachery. The Mana Core Magus had gone above and beyond when it came to securing a seat at the Council of Dawn.
He had, on many occasions, displayed utmost loyalty not just to the other Councilors, but also to the Cult of Bones. After all, he was well aware of the fate that had befallen his predecessor, Vulwin Preskian. He was wise not to repeat the same mistakes.
Yet, now all of a sudden, he was being labeled a traitor by Nyle Damon in front of all the Councilors — well, all the Councilors that mattered, anyway.
So how could he not be enraged?
After a brief verbal altercation between them, the two were separated by the other Councilors. Both were made to sit on opposite ends of the table. More attention was given to Damon, as everyone knew how rash and quick to anger he was.
But from time to time, the three of them — Yaegar, Bowman, and Hastings — would cast questioning glances toward the elven councilor.
This fact truly angered Vaelor Vornis because, of course, he knew he was innocent. He had not divulged even a syllable of a secret that Damon claimed. In fact, he truly had no idea what the leader of the Shadowblades was even talking about.
But there was one thing he knew for certain:
He fucking hated Bowman right now!
"You fuck!" He roared, pointing his finger at the old assassin sitting on the other side of the table. "How dare you spew lies! You claim I'm a traitor, yet not provide even a shred of evidence! I should be the one to kill you for your poisonous remarks!"
Damon slammed his fists on the table and rose to his feet. "You motherf—"
"Silence."
Uther Bowman's cold voice echoed inside the chamber. He gazed at Damon with narrowed eyes, then shifted his attention to Velor.
"Both of you," he added.
Seeing the elven Councilor hesitate to say something, but ultimately sit down quietly, made Adam wonder.
I see, he mused as he sat down.
So Uther Bowman has the most authority within this circle of rats. He's also the oldest of the lot, probably with one foot in the grave already.
Adam found his true target. Despite identifying the head of these traitorous scums, he didn't dare to fight Uther Bowman head-on. This was a Magus who had lived for over a thousand years and had experienced far too much.
One must always beware of an old man in a game where men usually die young.
Take Gerald Acadia, for example. He was ancient and very close to death. Yet, he had killed several Mana Core Magi in the Battle of Ravenfell before sacrificing himself to protect his comrades.
Thinking about him, Adam's heart churned with tumultuous waves. Oh, how much he wished he could strangle all these traitors before him this very instant.
But no…
He had to be patient.
If he's the leader, then he must've been the one who also prevented the backup from arriving during the Battle of Ravenfell, Adam thought as he suppressed the murderous light in his eyes.
Very well, Uther Bowman. You scheme against us, and I'll scheme against you.
Two can play this game.
After ensuring that both parties had settled down, Bowman turned to Damon and said in a cold voice, "Is this why you summoned us? This is the reason for the emergency council?"
Damon completely ignored the old man. He pointed straight at Vaelor, his aura still flaring.
"You leaked our secrets to that group," he growled. "Don't bother denying it! I lost Meechum and three other Wardens because of you! An internal leak of this scale doesn't just happen by accident, you cunt!"
The moment he said those words, everyone in the room visibly shifted. Not just because leaking confidential secrets was a crime of the highest order, but because Meechum was now dead.
They all knew that Damon and Meechum went way back. They shared a strong bond. Now they understood why he was so furious. But what they didn't understand was… why would he point fingers at Vaelor? What was Damon's reasoning behind it? What made him suspect the new Councilor?
They all wanted to know.
Uther Bowman retrieved an octagonal disk and spoke a few words into it. A few seconds later, a voice spoke back to him through the disk.
Bowman's face darkened as he glanced at Hastings and Yaegar. "Meechum, two Wardens, and two Agents from Damon's faction have all had their Soulmark Lanterns snuffed out."
Vaelor's eyes widened. "That is absurd!" he said angrily. "I don't know what you're talking—"
Damon sharply interrupted him. "Then tell me why that group knew exactly what our shell companies and fronts in the city are. Explain how they knew who to target! Because you were the one who told them! You lying fucking weasel!"
"I cannot explain something I didn't do!" Vaelor shot back. "I've given this organization nothing but loyalty—"
At that moment, Bowman raised a hand, interrupting the elf.
He then turned to Damon with a grim look on his face. "You keep mentioning this… group. Just who are you talking about?"
Hearing those words, Damon couldn't help but visibly frown. "Wait, you… you don't know?"
"This is the first time I'm hearing of it," Bowman said with a dark look on his face. "What is this group? How do you know about them? And… why do you think Vaelor is the suspect? What led you to believe that?"
Damon was perplexed for only a few moments, but then he turned on Bowman. "You're taking his side now?!"
"I'm taking no one's side," Bowman said in an even voice. "I'm stopping this from turning into a farce! Accusations aren't proof, Damon. So tell me everything you know!"
Damon clenched his fists and spoke through gritted teeth, "You weren't there! You didn't see what I saw!"
"And you are not thinking clearly," Bowman coldly said. "You've just come back from a disaster. You're angry. You're shaken—"
His words were interrupted when Damon burst into laughter.
He laughed and laughed and laughed.
"I see, I see what is happening," he murmured as he rose to his feet.
At the same time, he secretly sent Vaelor a Mind Whisper, causing the latter to be even more puzzled. But hearing the contents of the message, the elf's expression froze.
"They said this was just the beginning," Damon said as he slowly walked towards the gate, his expression furious. "They said not to mess with them, but… fuck them! I'll show them the consequences of messing with me!"
With that said, he left the chamber, leaving behind his parting words:
"You want evidence? Fine, I'll get it. I'll reach out to you all when I have it. Then everything will come to light! Just you wait!"
