Something strange had happened in the emergency council meeting earlier…After Shaw Jidu and Carlton Yates learned of the murders of two fellow Councilors, another startling round of discussion was brought to the table.
It was the proposal of bringing Gerald Acadia's protege, Berger Glynhorn, back to the Twilight Brotherhood.
What was even more shocking was…
"The leaders of the Free Agents and the Interventionists made this proposal?!" Krummor blurted out in sheer disbelief.
Everyone knew that the Interventionists and the Preservationists had always been at odds with each other for a very long time.
Yet now, it was none other than their long-term bitter rivals who had proposed a change that would greatly benefit the Preservationists.
Krummor and the other Wardens were simply unable to believe what they were hearing.
"Indeed." Shaw Jidu nodded, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
Even he and Yates had been astonished to hear Agron Yaegar and Kenton Hastings make that proposal. And what was even more surprising was that Uther Bowman, the leader of the Diplomats, had been completely against it.
"Yaegar and Hastings provided evidence that Berger was innocent," Shaw Jidu continued. "That it wasn't him that murdered Vulwin Preskian."
"The evidence tied Vulwin's murder to Nyle Damon, and thus removing the primary justification for Berger's exile," Carlton Yates added with a scoff.
Once the evidence proving Berger's innocence was brought to the table, Uther Bowman had no option but to relent.
Keeping an innocent man banished, especially one with Berger's reputation and history, only weakened the Brotherhood further. Especially considering that the organization had just lost two Mana Core Magi, it was imperative that Berger returned.
But still… the timing of all of this was all too coincidental.
"Kenny uncovers dark secrets… a mysterious group killing two Councilors… and Berger returning," Krummor murmured in a daze. "Wh-what… just what the hell is going on?"
"We're not so sure ourselves," Shaw Jidu said with a faint smile. "But we are certain that Yaegar and Hastings no longer trust Bowman for some reason."
And that was indeed the case.
Yaegar and Hastings no longer believed Bowman was acting alone. The existence of a mysterious third party backing him changed the entire strategic and political landscape. That is why they believed bringing Berger back was so vital.
For he created a counterweight.
The gnome was not aligned with Bowman, had no reason to protect him, and had already been wronged by the current power structure. That made him uniquely valuable as an internal stabilizer.
This was a preemptive survival move! Yaegar and Hastings knew that if they misjudged Bowman's reach, they could be the next to die. Bringing Berger back strengthened their position before Bowman could act.
As for shifting the blame of Vulwin's murder to Damon… who cared about the reputation of a dead man anyway? Could Damon return from the grave and argue that he was innocent?
"Th-this… this is all too much to digest," Krummor murmured as he massaged his temples.
He suddenly thought of something and couldn't help but ask:
"My Lords, this strange new divide between the Councilors Bowman, Hastings, and Yaegar… could it be that… this was also orchestrated by the mysterious group?"
Shaw Jidu shook his head slowly. "It's possible, but we don't have enough information to say that with certainty. Too much of what we're seeing is still speculation, and we don't yet know how much of this conflict is internal politics and how much is external manipulation."
"Until we uncover more, we should assume both possibilities remain on the table," Carlton Yates added.
Krummor gulped. "So should we be wary of this mysterious group or…"
This time, Shaw Jidu deliberated for a few moments before replying, "We should be cautious, but not hostile."
Yates silently nodded, agreeing with the man's sentiment.
Shaw Jidu continued, "For now, all we truly know is that their actions align with our interests, but we don't know their motives, their limits, or what they ultimately want. Until we understand that, treating them as allies will be naive… but treating them as enemies would be just as dangerous."
After all, this mysterious group had managed to kill not just one but two Mana Core Magi in the same night. That fact alone made Shaw Jidu and Carlton Yates extremely wary.
While the Preservationists, along with the Seekers and the Reformers, cautiously believed that the mysterious group's actions, however violent, were inadvertently helping their cause by exposing corruption and weakening the traitorous factions from within.
From their perspective, someone out there was tearing down the very elements that they themselves sought to dismantle.
On the other hand, the Interventionists and the Free Agents saw the situation very differently.
To them, the mysterious group seemed to be operating in favor of Bowman and the Diplomats, eliminating obstacles and reshaping the balance of power in ways that benefited their rivals.
Hasting and Yaegar's suspicion ran deep, and every new development only reinforced their belief that the unseen group was moving in support of Bowman.
As for the Shadowblades and the Wildwatchers, they were barely part of the conversation anymore. Their leaders had already been killed in an incident attributed to this mysterious group, leaving their factions leaderless and in disarray, effectively removing them from the political equation.
The appearance of this mysterious group had put every faction of the Brotherhood on edge, each interpreting its actions through the lens of their own fears and interests.
And yet, for all the fear, speculation, and political maneuvering it had caused…
The truth was far simpler.
The mysterious group wasn't a group at all.
It was just one man.
With only a handful of carefully timed moves, a single unseen man had managed to throw the entire balance of power within the Twilight Brotherhood into disorder.
From the shadows, he had removed key figures, exposed hidden corruption, and forced factions that once stood firmly opposed to one another into uneasy cooperation.
His enemies found themselves suddenly weakened, divided, or suddenly on the defensive, while those who unknowingly benefited from his actions gained ground without ever realizing whose hand guided these events.
All the while, he remained unseen.
No name. No faction. And no allegiance anyone could confirm.
Just a hidden presence moving pieces across the board, leaving every faction scrambling to interpret events, suspecting one another, and preparing for threats they could neither see nor understand.
He was the Faceless Magus, who cloaked himself in secrecy and wielded uncertainty as his weapon.
And his work was far from complete…
