Chapter 1512 Lebu's Theory

At one of the Brotherhood's safehouses in Trade Ward, Lebu paced back and forth across the room, a dark frown on his face.

He had finally uncovered the truth about Kenny and Nilrem's relationship. But instead of finding answers, he was faced with more questions.

Nilrem gets grievously injured in the Sea of Green, he began his train of thought.

He is found by Kenny's parents. They heal him and nurse him back to health. As a token of gratitude, Nilrem gives Kenny the Potion of Hope. He's at the right age to consume it, after all.

With Nilrem's help, Kenny embarks on the path of arcana. And then… he leaves? If I assume that he got lost inside the deep jungles for several more years before making it out, then yes, the timeline checks out.

This deduction was in line with his theory regarding why Kenny would choose a beret adorned with a peacock feather while he made his arrangements for Lebu to find the evidence.

This suggested that Kenny really looked up to Nilrem and was fond of him. Or else why would he choose that same hat? That couldn't have been a random act.

Lebu's line of reasoning brought him to another thought.

Nilrem has to be an expert Herbalist for him to be able to concoct the Potion of Hope. Moreover, this potion's recipe is strongly guarded. Only large factions own the recipe.

The frown on his face deepened.

So I can assume that Nilrem is backed by an influential faction. He's a Mana Vortex Magus. He travels around the world, even to the most dangerous places. Just how strong is the faction backing him? How far does its influence reach? The whole world? Just how mysterious is this faction that we haven't even heard of it until now?

Reports indicate that Nilrem was in Amberfall before arriving here. A few years ago, there had been some chatter about something big going down in the City of Merchants.

I'm not quite sure of the details, but I'm certain that the Cult of Bones was involved. A Mana Core Magus from the Union was also present in the city at the time.

My superior told me that the King of Ignisra also advanced to the Mana Core Rank around the same time.

Is there a chance that all these events could perhaps be… related?

The more he thought about it, the more he couldn't help but begin to feel this vague suspicion in his heart.

Magus Nilrem, the faction backing him, Ignisra Kingdom, Cult of Bones, Sovereign Union, Kenny…

Backed by an influential faction, enmity with the Cult of Bones…

Influential faction, influential faction…

Lebu's body trembled.

He knew he was shooting in the dark here, but why did that vague feeling in his heart keep growing stronger?

His pace turned even quicker, and the frown on his face darker.

Could it be possible that…

Lebu nervously gulped.

That Nilrem is a part of that mysterious group? The very faction that killed two of the traitorous Councilors?!

His breathing quickened, and he froze in his footsteps.

"No, this…" He shook his head and sat down in the chair. The man poured himself a glass of water and greedily drank it. Yet, his throat still felt parched.

The Agent massaged his temples, thinking to himself as he shook his head:

No, that's just too much!

I don't have enough information to even ascertain that claim. Yes, that's probably it…

I need to get a hold of myself. I can't go around thinking about such ridiculous things.

But the more Lebu thought about it, the more he couldn't get it out of his mind.

Nyle Damon had accused Vaelor Voris of leaking secrets to a mysterious group. Coincidentally, Kenny had also uncovered some dark secrets about the traitorous factions around the same time.

Could it be… that the mysterious group had helped Kenny uncover those secrets? Lebu thought with a pensive look on his face.

No, that's not it. For a faction like that to be powerful enough to murder two Mana Core Magi in the same night, they wouldn't need someone like Kenny to uncover the evidence.

They are more than capable of finding it all on their own.

So how is it related to Kenny?

Was it the mysterious faction that shared the evidence with Kenny? Or was it the other way around?

Or could it be…

Lebu made a bold assumption, one that made his heart sink.

Could Kenny have been part of this mysterious faction?!

If that was truly the case, the repercussions would be earth-shattering!

If that were true, it meant the Brotherhood had been compromised from within — not by the Cult of Bones, but by yet another group.

No, no, no! Lebu rose to his feet and began pacing around once again, his back drenched in cold sweat.

Then that would mean Kenny was a highly trained spy before I even recruited him, he thought in alarm.

That's just… impossible!

Kenny was a naive little boy when Lebu found him. How could he think that the same boy was actually a double spy secretly working for another mysterious organization?

He couldn't. He just couldn't.

No, I'm overthinking things, he thought.

For all I know, they couldn't even be remotely connected.

Maybe Kenny and Nilrem's relationship had extended as far as whatever had happened within the Sea of Green, and nothing more.

Yes, yes… that must be it…

But despite that, Lebu couldn't be certain.

Only one thought echoed repeatedly inside his mind:

What if?

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and took long breaths to calm himself. It was a task, for sure. He believed that if he continued his train of thought, he might even go crazy. He had to tame his restless mind.

Since these were just his theories, he couldn't bring them up to his superiors. They'd simply think he was overthinking things since he was deeply tied to Kenny, and still hadn't moved on from the boy's death.

So, unless he had something conclusive, Lebu found it unwise to bring this to the attention of his superiors.

He had to first find answers.

And there was only one way he knew how to…

I must meet him!

Lebu had to see Nilrem and confirm his thoughts. He already knew that the old man and Kenny were related, but he needed to know the extent to which they were.

Why had Nilrem appeared in Springdale only months after Kenny disappeared?

Was this all just a coincidence?

Or was there a grand and elaborate scheme at play?

He needed to find out.

And he needed to find out soon!
