Chapter 1515 Order of the Faceless Magi

Lebu was so stunned that he didn't even know how to react.

All the grace, poise, and manners that he had learned over the course of his life were immediately thrown out of the window.

He stared at Nilrem's figure in a daze.

The old man was half covered in shadows and half illuminated under the glow

of the hanging lamp. And yet, his face couldn't be seen at all. Just the outline of his figure and the gleaming mysteries in his pale blue eyes.

Lebu's mouth turned dry, and he kept swallowing, trying to chase the

discomfort away.

Nilrem waved a hand, and a waterskin appeared on the table. He gestured to the ginger-haired man to satiate his thirst.

But Lebu was seemingly oblivious to everything around him except the mysterious old man standing before him.

"Just..." he finally managed to muster out a word. "Who are you people?" "We are an ancient secret organization older than the Brotherhood," Nilrem began in a dignified voice. "We are older than even the Doom of Feypore." "The Doom of Feypore!" Lebu was stunned.

Lebu knew little about the era that predated the rise of the Haynam Empire, the Sovereign Union, or the Acadian Empire. But he knew one thing for certain: the cataclysmic event known as the Doom of Feypore was something that occurred over five thousand years ago.

And yet, Nilrem claimed that the Order of the Faceless Men was an

organization that predated even the Doom of Feypore!

No matter how much Lebu wanted to believe him, no matter how he tried to reason it out, the claim sounded utterly bogus.

"Yes," Nilrem said with a faint smile. "Our origins lie deep beneath the glory and splendor of Feypore, in the mines that fed the empire's endless greed. Our founders were slaves taken from countless lands, forced into labor."

Lebu fell into a kind of trance as he listened to the origins of this secret order.

"Although they came from different cultures, they were bound by the same fate, Nilrem continued.

"They shared a single creed: all faces fade in time, and time fades all faces. When Feypore fell, the Order survived. The Faceless Magi vanished from history, resurfacing only when unrighteousness threatens to swallow the world."

Lebu remained silent for a long time, trying to comprehend the weight of those words.

"Even if what you said is true," he said. "Your organization emerging now would mean..."

"Yes." Nilrem nodded. "The wicked have grown strong, and those meant to protect righteousness have chosen compromise. The Faceless Magi reveal themselves only when the world needs correction, when injustice must be dealt with."

He paused, his lips curling into a knowing smile. "You already know who I'm talking about, don't you?"

"The Cult of Bones..." Lebu murmured.

"Indeed." The old man nodded. He deeply looked at the Agent and continued, "I must commend your investigation and deduction capabilities. They are truly praiseworthy."

"So, I... I was correct?" Lebu couldn't believe it himself.

Even he thought that his wild theories would never get him anywhere, that he was simply trying his luck as he made circles out of straight lines.

But to think that he had actually been right all along...

"We orchestrated the events that happened in Amberfall almost seven years ago," Nilrem said in a dignified voice. "We stopped the Mana Core Cultist, Osbert, who threatened to destroy the city by releasing a Rank 4 undead knight."

He leaned over, pressing his fists against the table. His eyes narrowed, and he continued:

"And yes, it was we who assassinated Nyle Damon and Vaelor Voris. We have identified the traitors of the Twilight Brotherhood and are actively trying to get rid of them."

"Why!" Lebu rose to his feet. "Why are you meddling in our business?"

"Because this is the right thing to do," Nilrem answered without hesitation. "The Twilight Brotherhood was meant to be a righteous faction. It was your duty to maintain peace and protect the innocents, was it not?"

Lebu found himself at a loss for words. He hung his head in shame, gritting his teeth as anger welled up inside him.

"But instead, you became a proxy for that heinous cult," Nilrem continued. "So we have emerged from the shadows of history, not only to correct the balance of Tron, but also the Twilight Brotherhood."

"By embedding spies in our organization?" Lebu sneered.

Nilrem sighed. "You have the wrong idea, young man."

"You claim that you didn't implant Kenny into our organization to spy on us," Lebu said, his heart churning with conflicting emotions. "Even if I accept that, do you really expect me to believe there aren't other moles from your secret order?"

"You are free to believe whatever you wish," Nilrem shrugged, not at all taking offense. "But the truth remains, the Twilight Brotherhood and the Order of the Faceless Magi have always been on the same side, vanquishing evil and protecting innocents."

He paused for a moment, then added. "Your founder, Aldo Wagner, was a friend

of the Second Stranger, did you know that?"

"What?" Lebu frowned. "Second... Stranger?"

"Yes." Nilrem nodded. "It's the title given to the leader of the Faceless Magi -

The Stranger."

Everything that Lebu heard just now was simply too much for him to take in.

He suddenly felt dizzy and couldn't help but sit back down.

"Are you saying... you never helped Kenny find all that evidence?" he murmured, almost to himself. "Or even the other way around?"

Nilrem, too, took a seat. He shook his head, sighing. "I really don't know what

you're talking about, young man. Do you truly think we'll require the help of a

Mana Foundation Magus to uncover secrets?"

This was in line with Lebu's reasoning. "So he... he really wasn't one of you?" he

asked.

"Kenny never had what it took to become a Faceless Magus." Nilrem shook his head, a reminiscent look in his eyes.

"I became quite fond of that kid during the time I was recuperating in his village. He was naive, but his eyes shone with boundless curiosity and wonder. It's why I gifted him the Potion of Hope."

Lebu remained silent for a long time. Finally, he couldn't help but ask, "Why are you telling me all this? Aren't you afraid that I'll tell my superiors about this

meeting?"

"I do not care." Nilrem smiled. "As I've mentioned earlier, the organizations we belong to have always been on the same side."

He paused for a moment, his smile turning somber. "As for why I'm telling you all of this... It's because I can see how much Kenny meant to you. Kenny is the common bond we share. And I want to work with you to avenge him." Lebu tried very hard to stop his eyes from tearing up. The image of the boy who sacrificed himself for the Brotherhood eighed heavily on his chest, shame and guilt drowning his heart.

Then he saw Nilrem extend a hand out toward him.

Lebu looked up. The old man was watching him with a faint, encouraging smile.

The Faceless Magus said softly, yet firmly:

"So will you help me avenge Kenny?"

Lebu deeply looked at him, the dusk-skinned youth's words echoing in his

mind:

Revenge will arrive slowly... like twilight.

He deliberated for a few moments and then nodded, his gaze turning solemn.

"I will."
