Chapter 1535 Vague Unease

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The surrounding plain had been turned into an icy tundra.

Temperature had plunged, and everything, including earth, stone, and scattered vegetation, was encased in thick layers of ice.

The ground glittered faintly as the rays of the morning sun bounced off it. It hardened and cracked under the weight of the cold, while the air itself felt sharp and brittle with frost.

On one side of the frozen expanse stood the Winter Lord, white hair unmoving, cold radiating from him in steady waves.

On the other side stood Adam, dark-robed and masked, tyrannical mana rolling off him as he faced his opponent.

Between them lay nothing but frozen land and silence, the battlefield set and waiting for what came next.

The Winter Lord intently stared at the masked man. "Are you from the faction responsible for the murder of two Councilors?" he asked.

Adam's lips curled into a smirk beneath the mask. "So what if I am?"

"Why are you doing this?" The Winter Lord was genuinely perplexed. "Why meddle in the affairs of the Twilight Brotherhood?"

"I can ask you the same," Adam answered in an even voice.

"The relationship between the Cult and the Brotherhood is deeper than you think, Magus." The Winter Lord's eyes narrowed. "You know not what you are getting into."

Adam's pupils constricted. Something in the man's words felt wrong. It echoed a vague unease he had carried over the past few years, ever since he realized just how deep the Cult's claws had sunk into the Brotherhood.

"I suppose you're not going to explain further?" He asked with a smile.

"Will you tell me who divulged information about my arrival?" The Winter Lord asked a question of his own.

Adam laughed.

"It seems we've reached an impasse," he said.

"You are strong, Magus," The Winter Lord said as he wove a series of complex hand seals. "But as someone who stands in the way of my lord's dream, you must die here and now!"

The white-haired Elder slammed his palms on the icy plain.

The frozen ground began to crack.

Icy plates split apart as bony claws punched through the surface, followed by skeletal arms and rotting hands encased in frost. One after another, undead creatures clawed their way free, dragging themselves out of the ice with grinding sounds of bone and frozen earth.

Within moments, a small army had risen. Ice-bound skeletons and frozen zombies stood in jagged ranks, their hollow eyes burning with cold, unnatural light. Frost clung to their figures, and each movement left shards of ice falling to the ground.

Then, beside the Winter Lord, the ice split once more.

Two towering undead knights emerged, far larger and imposing than the rest. Their armor was fused with ice, their presence radiating death and cold in heavy waves. They took positions at his sides, like executioners awaiting a command.

A frozen undead army now stood between Adam and the Winter Lord.

Adam wasn't intimidated by the sudden arrival of so many undead. He had already expected this outcome.

However, what the Winter Lord had just said truly struck a nerve.

"I must die because I stand in the way of the lich and his dream?" He sneered. "His dream to sacrifice billions of innocent souls to the devils?"

The Winter Lord's eyes narrowed. Though he appeared cold and indifferent on the surface, inwardly, he was shocked.

Knowledge of devils, and more importantly, the Cult's plan to sacrifice this world to them, was their most closely guarded secret.

And yet, this masked man, a stranger whose origins he knew nothing about, was already aware of it!

If he knew… then how many others did as well?

The Winter Lord would have much preferred to capture the masked man alive. But the latter was too powerful for that. So he had to kill him, as well as the faction behind him.

"…You know too much, Magus." The Winter Lord waved a hand and commanded his army to rush forward. "You cannot be allowed to live!"

He understood the stakes clearly.

If he failed to kill the masked man here and now, this opponent would become a serious obstacle to his lord's grand design. And that was something he would never allow.

Adam's heart turned cold as he saw the wave of frozen undead surge toward him. He did not move an inch, his gaze locked onto the Winter Lord and the two Rank 4 undead knights protecting him.

"What a pity," he murmured as he raised his hands and began weaving hand seals for the first time since the start of this battle. "You're just another brainwashed pawn who cannot be reasoned with."

A brilliant magic circle spread out from beneath his feet, racing across the frozen ground.

And then…

The weight of the world came crashing down on the Winter Lord and his army.

Rank 4 Spell: Amplify Gravity!

Gravity increased severalfold in an instant.

The undead army was crushed where it stood. Skeletons collapsed into heaps of shattered bones, joints snapping apart under the sudden weight.

Zombies slammed face-first into the ice, their bodies flattening and tearing as rotten flesh was pressed into the ground.

The frozen earth itself couldn't endure it. Thick ice fractured with sharp cracks, splintering outward as the ground beneath buckled and caved in. Large sections sank inward, leaving jagged depressions where the undead had been standing moments before.

What had been an army was reduced to broken remains, pinned and pulverised by overwhelming force.

The Winter Lord's eyes slightly widened. "Gravity Magic!"

He and his undead knight were outside the main range of Adam's spell, so they weren't affected as severely as the other undead that had been closer. Even so, seeing the vast majority of his army incapacitated by a single spell left the Elder genuinely shocked.

He must be affected by the increased gravity as well, he thought as he quickly drafted a new battle plan.

I just need to—

His thoughts came to an abrupt halt when he saw the masked man weave a very simple hand seal and then disappear.

Warning bells thundered inside the Winter Lord's mind.

He instinctively willed the undead knights to guard him as he activated one of his many defensive artifacts. At last, he turned toward the source of the threat.

The Winter Lord turned around and looked up.

There, he saw the masked man levitating in the air like the harbinger of war and destruction.

And then…

Flames rained down from the heavens.
