Chapter 1553 Last Light

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Wagner couldn't help but come to a halt.

The structure that appeared before him was a tomb carved from a massive horned skull. Twisting horns rose from its crown, and the bone was darker than night, wrapped by otherworldly magic.

This was the skull of the ancient titan whose remains he had crossed earlier. Even after so many years had passed, the corpse still endured.

Wagner hesitated.

He knew he shouldn't have stopped, not even for a moment, to look at the ominous structure. But something about the tomb called out to him. It was strangely bewitching.

Even as he understood that lingering here was dangerous, his body moved on its own, drawn toward the skull.

The whispers in his mind grew clearer as he approached, no longer vague murmurs but faint suggestions, guiding his steps.

Each one promised answers, about magic, about the spirit world, about the mysteries of the cosmos, about this forbidden zone, about... a path home.

Reason told him to turn away, yet his feet carried him forward, toward the gaping maw of the tomb.

The greatest desire in Wagner's heart swelled as he drew closer to the giant horned skull, magnified many times over.

In the end, only a single thought remained in his mind.

Home.

Perhaps this truly is the place I have been looking for, he thought, anticipation bubbling in his heart.

The answers I seek... I shall find them here.

I will find a way to return to my family!

Soon, he stepped through the gaping maw of the colossal skull.

And the moment he stepped inside, he froze. His heart was brutally gripped by an unseen hand. His feeble legs trembled as he collapsed to the ground.

Terror.

Otherworldly terror.

This ominous feeling seized him completely. The aura of dread crushed down on him, leaving Wagner frozen and defenseless. His heart pounded so violently it felt as if it might burst from his chest.

At last, he could no longer contain it. A primal scream tore from his throat, raw with fear and anguish.

"AAAAGGGHHHH!!!"

As if responding to his call, the tomb shuddered.

Wagner felt it.

His screams vanished almost instantly, swallowed by an endless aura of malice and the fear of the unknown. His eyes snapped open, and he briefly glanced at the interior of the tomb.

It was pitch dark. The ground sloped downward, opening into a cavern. Wagner gazed forward, and in that moment, he just so happened to see a creature so terror-inducing and wrong that he instantly felt that it didn't belong to this world.

A vast swirling mass of tentacles and tendrils, folding in on itself then spreading apart in an endless, shifting motion. Countless eyes were embedded within the writhing flesh.

Just a simple glance was enough.

It was enough to turn him mad.

In the next moment, ceaseless ravings instantly assaulted his mind, far louder and far more ominous than before. They spoke in a language that he did not know, but he understood what they said to him.

They screamed repeatedly:

The Beyond... The Beyond... The Beyond...

The veins in Wagner's eyes burst open, and hot blood spilled down his face. He shut his eyes at once, but even that brief glimpse was enough.

The abomination had already taken hold of him.

Darkness flooded his spirit sea, and the mad whispers roared within, drowning out all reason.

The Beyond... The Beyond... The Beyond...

The screams inside his mind slowly merged with the words escaping his lips.

"THE BEYOND... THE BEYOND... THE BEYOND..."

He roared at the top of his lungs and desperately fled toward the tomb's exit, barely escaping as a thick, fleshy tendril lashed out, missing him by a hair's breadth.

The countless eyes lining the tendril blinked in unison, gleaming with cold, otherworldly intelligence. Then it withdrew, sliding back into the depths of the cavern. The mass receded, folding in on itself until it concealed itself from

reality once again.

Silence returned to the tomb. And once more, it stood empty.

Wagner fled past the tomb, his movements frantic and unsteady as madness crept deeper into his mind. Beneath his weathered skin, he could feel tiny worms wriggling, twisting as if they were burrowing into his flesh.

Inside his spirit sea, all light was gone. It had become pitch black, vast, and empty. Within that darkness, only a single thought thundered again and again, drowning out everything else:

The Beyond... The Beyond... The Beyond...

With every step he took, his mind and body grew heavier. His heart felt

suffocated, and his spirit felt crushed. Even the air felt thick and foul.

Wagner fled the Dark Valley, screaming in madness, his heart drowning in

terror.

When he finally crossed the rocky boundary, the land opened up into a wide stretch of shoreline. The sound of waves reached his ears, yet all he heard was:

The Beyond... The Beyond... The Beyond...

Waves rolled steadily against the sand. The sharp scent of salt filled the air as he stepped onto the beach. His feet came to a gradual halt as he took in the scene before him through bloodshot eyes.

In the distance, the sun sank toward the horizon. The last light of autumn slipped beneath the sea, staining the sky in ominous hues of black and red.

"The Beyond... The Beyond... The Beyond..." Wagner murmured as he limped towards the waters. "It's calling to me..."

He collapsed to his knees, hands sinking into the wet sand. For a brief moment, he saw his reflection in the water.

An aged man stared back at him. He had white, thinning hair and sagging skin. Beneath it, worm-like tendrils squirmed. His blue eyes were vacant, weeping blood, filled with creeping madness.

"Ah... AHHHH!" He screamed in anguish and denial.

He could not banish the abomination from his mind. He could not. Within the

Dark Valley, he had grown old. Far too old. For him, centuries had passed there,

pushing him to the edge of his lifespan.

Wagner clawed at his face, sobbing in despair, "My wife... my children... I will

never see them again..."

He leaned back on his knees, staring up at the darkening sky, his heart breaking.

A single snowflake drifted from the heavens and touched the earth, carrying

with it a cold, ominous chill.

Winter had arrived. It was dreadful.
