The grand opening of the Soaring River Secret Plane had arrived once again. It was an event that took place every thirty years. An entire generation of young Magi would train and prepare for this single opportunity.
This time, the main square in Glassford was filled with delegations from across the Empire. Promising Mana Foundation Magi from every major arcane academy had gathered, including those from the Four Great Pillars. Even the elves of the Baja High Forest had sent their finest disciples.
They stood in orderly groups, flanked by guardians, elders, and professors. Robes of different colors marked their affiliations. Some looked calm. While others could barely contain their excitement.
All of them faced the center of the square, patiently waiting for the portal to open.
Not far away from the crowded central square, Adam sat quietly in an outdoor seating area of a teahouse.
A gourd of wine rested on the table before him.
Valerian lay sprawled across his lap, looking dejected and unusually silent as the noise of the crowd echoed faintly in the air.
Adam gently stroked the gray fur on the young dragon's back. As he glanced at his little brother's drooping ears, he smiled faintly.
"How are you feeling, Val?"
"Myu..." Valerian closed his eyes. "I don't like this at all. I wish... I wish I could have seen him one last time."
Adam's smile deepened. "Such is life, my little brother. Forget mortals, even the mightiest of Magi will one day grow old and die. That is the natural cycle."
His voice was calm and gentle.
"All we can do is cherish the good times we shared with those who are gone."
He paused briefly, then looked into the distance.
"Tell me, Val... do you want Rowan to be a source of grief? Or a source of happiness?"
Valerian's ears twitched ever so slightly. He looked up at Adam and said with tearful eyes, "Source of happiness..."
Adam gently wiped his little brother's tears away. He then said with a smile: "Then remember the good times you shared with Rowan. Remember how he stayed up late at night just to cook you a meal. Remember how he gave you those little trinkets for you to play with. Remember all the happy times."
He ran a hand through Valerian's furry little head.
"Remember the warmth he brought into your life."
"Myuu..." Valerian nodded. Though he still couldn't stop his eyes from tearing up.
Adam sipped directly from the wine gourd. He leaned back in the chair and gazed at the distant, drifting clouds.
This was one of the reasons why Magi rarely grew close to mortals.
They understood the passage of time too well.
A mortal's lifespan was brief, just a fragment compared to the long lives Magi could live. Decades would pass for a mortal, and then... they would fade. For the Magus, it would feel like a chapter that ended too quickly.
So many chose distance.
It was easier to remain detached than to grow attached, only to endure the grief of watching those bonds end in death.
Thinking back to the time when he had first met Rowan in the cobbled streets of Corvid Quarter, Adam's lips curled into a brilliant smile.
And then... he laughed.
The people nearby gave him strange looks, wondering why this teenager was laughing so loudly and without a care in the world. And then they saw the gourd of wine before him, it started to make sense.
Suddenly, he lowered his head and gazed in the direction of the central square, his tenebrous eyes flashing with a sharp light.
"All right, it's time." He gently lifted Valerian and placed him on his shoulder. He then grabbed the wine gourd and began making his way to the square.
It would have been more convenient if I had Sir Joker's calling card with me, he thought to himself.
Well, whatever.
"Coming through!" Adam made his way through the packed square, slipping between groups of students and elders.
A few people muttered curses at him for cutting across their path. Others paused mid-conversation, their irritation fading as they took in his striking features, quietly wondering which academy or noble house he might belong to. A few moments later, the space at the center of the square began to tremble. A tear split open in the void, widening until it formed a large blue portal leading into the secret plane.
Cheers and applause surged through the crowd. The armed Magi of the
Acadian Empire swiftly restored order and began guiding the selected young Mana Foundation Magi toward the portal.
Adam waited quietly, watching the children enter the portal with anxiety clearly plastered on their faces.
He remembered the time, when all those years ago, he had stood in their place... nervous, hopeful, chasing opportunity, and treasure.
A faint sigh escaped his lips.
"Feels like a lifetime ago."
He scanned the children entering the portal and saw some of them proudly representing the Clover Academy, Saratoga Castle, and other esteemed
academies.
Watching the insignia of Saratoga on the gray robes of the young Magi, Adam smiled in reminiscence.
As the last of the children finally disappeared into the portal, Adam stepped forward at last.
"Hey, you!" An Acadian Magus instantly noticed him heading toward the portal. "Stop right there!"
The man came forward to push Adam back, but a simple glare from Valerian made him shudder and collapse to the ground.
"Easy, little brother. Adam gently patted the young dragon's head. Following that, Valerian transformed into a gray light and entered his spirit sea.
He continued forward, walking toward the portal without hesitation. More and
more armed guards rushed in, surrounding him and pointing their weapons at him. Even the nearby crowd was stunned by the sudden turn of events.
"Stop right there!"
"Do not move, boy!"
"This is your final warning!"
Several guards, led by a Mana Vortex Magus, quickly formed a perimeter around Adam, cutting off his path and attempting to block his advance.
But Adam simply disappeared, and then reappeared before the portal.
The armed guards were thunderstruck. They turned around and saw the raven-haired youth standing right before the portal.
As the giant portal began to shrink and collapse, Adam extended a hand and
pressed his palm against the blue surface.
The tear in the void violently flickered. The crowd was horrified to see that this
teenager was forcefully preventing the portal from closing.
In that instant, all the Magi present in the square understood...
This raven-haired youth was no ordinary figure!
Within the unstable portal, a faint outline of an arched gate appeared.
Adam smiled and entered nonchalantly.
The arched gate vanished, and the blue portal collapsed a moment later. The crowd outside was frozen still, unable to believe their eyes.
Meanwhile, deep within the heart of the secret plane, inside the House of
Cards, the Joker stiffened.
Just now, he sensed avast presence enter his domain.
His eyes widened slowly as realization dawned on him... The newcomer was far more powerful than even the four Great Guardians!!!
