Adam's eyes snapped open.He jumped from the bed and darted to the edge of the room. With his back against the wall, he looked around with sheer panic plastered across his face.
The youth's tunic was drenched in cold sweat. His heart raced nervously, his breathing was ragged, and fear flickered across his tenebrous eyes.
"Wh-What... what was that!" He blurted out.
He paused for a moment, noticing something strange. He then quickly called out, "Val? Val! Where are you?!"
Gray light flashed, and the little guy emerged from Adam's spirit sea.
"Brother!" The young dragon jumped on his shoulder and asked in panic. "What happened? What's the matter with you?"
Adam turned to his little brother and glanced at him with trembling eyes. "You... did you see it? Did you see him?"
"See what?" Valerian was dumbfounded by Adam's sudden and strange reaction.
One moment, he was inside Adam's dream, weaving it out of his childhood memory. And the next moment, the dream collapsed, and he found himself in the youth's spirit sea.
"You d-didn't see him?" Adam asked in a shaky voice.
"What're you talking about?!" Valerian was beginning to grow nervous. He had never seen his brother lose his composure to such an extent.
Adam deeply looked at the young dragon, beads of sweat trickling down the side of his temple. He inhaled deeply, then exhaled a long, heavy sigh.
"So you didn't see him?" He murmured, nodding to himself. "O-Okay, okay."
He gulped nervously. "Get back inside. I, uh... I need time to think. I need time..."
"Brother, what happened?" Valerian's face turned pale. "What happened to you? Did I do something wrong? Was it the dream?"
Adam froze.
T
He turned to Valerian and intently studied him. Then, his lips curled into a relaxed smile, and he lied, "I just revisited a bad memory, Val. A bad dream, I suppose. It has nothing to do with you, silly. It's just me... my mind's a little messed up."
Valerian calmed down a little. "Are you sure? You don't look okay..."
Adam laughed, straightening his back. "I'm fine. Don't worry too much."
He ruffled the fur on the little guy's head and warmly said, "Return to my spirit sea, yeah? I'll be fine if I take a nap. Go and consolidate all that you've learned from weaving your first dream."
Valerian dubiously looked at Adam. He felt that his brother was hiding something. But seeing that he was fine now, the young dragon nodded.
"Myu!"
He then disappeared inside Adam's spirit sea in a flash of gray light.
Adam remained still for a few moments. Slowly, his smile faded, and he collapsed to the ground. Taking long and heavy breaths, he clutched at his forehead.
What the fuck was that?! He screamed inwardly.
It wasn't the success of the divination that shocked him.
Yes, he had uncovered the origin of the Faceless Mask. Yes, he had witnessed its forging.
But that wasn't what unsettled him.
What truly shocked him was this...
The Laughing God had sensed him.
How many countless millennia had passed since the mask was forged? Ages beyond record. Civilizations risen and erased. And yet, across the unimaginable stretch of time, the Laughing God had felt his gaze.
Not only felt it. But turned, looked at him, and recognized him.
Adam had always believed divination to be one-sided. A glimpse into the past or the future. A silent observation of what once was or will be.
But this... this was different.
The Laughing God had pierced through layers of time, space, and dream. He had looked back through the divination itself.
Adam hadn't even thought such a thing was possible!
And that impossibility was what frightened him the most. The implications
were truly horrifying.
Just how powerful must the Laughing God have been at the time to be even able to perform such a miraculous feat?
Emperor Magus, Adam thought to himself in stunned disbelief.
No... perhaps even greater!
The raven-haired youth slowly tried to control his emotions. He went through what he had just witnessed in the dream divination, and he wasn't even thinking about the process of the mask's forging.
He thought about something else something that gave birth to even more questions than answers.
Why did he say that? He thought with a dark frown.
Limitless...
What does it mean?
His mind tried to make sense out of it.
It could not have been a random word. A being like the Laughing God would
not speak without intent. That single word had been directed at him. Moreover, in the dream divination, the Laughing God hadn't been surprised to
see him. If he had, then he had hidden it expertly.
But no, Adam didn't believe that the god was surprised at all.
It was more like... the Laughing God had expected him.
He brushed his hand against his face, thinking to himself:
Just who is the Laughing God? Why did he create the Faceless Mask? And was I
always destined to inherit it?
Adam buried his face in his palms. A long time later, he leaned back and turned toward the window. Glancing at the twin moons in the night sky, he murmured:
"Breaker of Oaths; Weaver of Lies; Great God of Many Faces..."
He focused on the last title and wondered, That has to be due to the Faceless
Mask.
If the Laughing God was at least at the Emperor Rank, then I can assume that the Faceless Mask should also be somewhere around that level.
And if that is the case...
Then how extraordinary is the Lotus?
Adam had so many questions in his heart, but found answers to none.
Perhaps, as he continued advancing through the arcane ranks, he would one day uncover all the answers.
But that day was far in the future, long after he stepped into the Greater Universe and stood among powers far beyond this world.
For now, those questions would remain unanswered.
Before he could chase ancient truths and forgotten names, he had responsibilities here. His home world was still on the brink of catastrophe. His
enemies still moved in the shadows, and their plans were still unfolding.
Whatever "Limitless" meant, it would have to wait.
First, he had to settle matters at home.
It was time to return to Ravenfell...
