Chapter 1640 Test Subjects

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

"I-I swear we did nothing wrong!"

The wails of the old scholar echoed through the corridor as Edward grabbed him by the neck.

"We are just trying to understand the human anatomy!" The elderly Mana Liquefaction Magus protested. "A-And its effects on the psyche... the experimental data... it's-"

"Shut up," The Storm King coldly spat as he kicked the man in the back, causing the latter to miserably fall to the ground.

"Why are you doing this!" The scholar tried to get up, only to be kicked back down again.

Edward's eyes were bloodshot as he viciously grabbed the old man's sparse hair, forcing his head up.

On the way here, he had seen enough to make his stomach churn.

Room after room filled with children. They lay on cold metal tables, their bodies dull and nearly lifeless. Tubes and pipes were embedded into their flesh, some running directly into thier skulls. Their small bodies twitched weakly as strange fluids flowed through the equipment surrounding them.

Many of the children were already dead. The rest... barely alive.

Most of them looked no older than ten. Edward and the rest passed through dozens of such chambers. In total, they had found hundreds of children in those miserable conditions.

There was no saving them. Krummor and the others had made sure. For the moment those tubes and pipes left their frail bodies, they would die within

moments.

The living were no different from the dead.

And along the way, Edward had made sure that every cultist they encountered shared the same fate.

"Are you even fucking human?!" he growled as he looked into the old scholar's trembling eyes. "Children... they're children!"

"B-But they make for the perfect test subjects!" the old man blurted out. "The experiments had to be carried out before their bodies grew further. Why can't you see the reason in this?! It's for the greater good!"

Edward gnashed his jaws so hard he felt his teeth creak.

Perfect test subjects?

See reason?

For the greater good?

Edward's grip tightened in the man's hair until the old scholar cried out in agony.

On the way here, he and the rest had walked through corridor after corridor filled with the aftermath of those "experiments".

Children strapped to tables, small chests barely rising, eyes glassy and unfocused...

Edward had counted dozens of chambers. Hundreds of children.

Not soldiers.

Not Magi.

Children...

Little kids who had been dragged away from their parents and turned into tools.

And this old man called them perfect test subjects?

Edward's heart flared with unprecedented rage.

"Greater good?" he said slowly, his voice hoarse.

His fist slammed into the old man's face, sending teeth and blood spraying across the stone floor.

"For whose greater good?"

He dragged the man back up by the hair and glared into his terrified eyes.

"You people carved open children," Edward roared. "You turned them into corpses before they even had a chance to live!"

His blue eyes burned with fury and hatred.

"Bastard, you still dare talk to me about reason?!!"

He grabbed the man's head and then...

SPLAT!

Smashed it against the wall behind him. The old scholar's head burst open like a watermelon. His skull cracked almost immediately, and his brain turned to

mush.

Edward huffed in rage as he saw the scholar's lifeless body slide down to the ground. Yet he was still not done.

He drove his foot into the man's chest, shattering his ribs. He kicked again and again and again, until nothing was left of the man except for a disgusting,

mangled heap.

No one stopped him. No one even tried.

Because no one cared.

Because every man present had seen the same rooms on the way deeper into the mountain. Every one of them had seen what the researchers had done to

those poor children.

Hatred burned in their chests as they glared at the disfigured corpse.

Krummor finally stepped forward. His expression was as cold as stone as he turned to the remaining scholar they had taken captive on the way here.

The dwarf instructed his men to put the man down on his knees. He then grabbed his collar and pulled him close.

"Listen carefully," he spat coldly.

"You're going to take us to the children who haven't been experimented on yet.

I know there's a chamber full of them somewhere in this sick place."

His grip tightened, and he continued, "And if you so much as try to lie or slow

us down... you'll share the same fate."

"B-B-But!" the scholar said in a trembling voice. "You're going to kill me

anyway!"

"You can either die a quick death," Krummor growled. "Or get tortured for days, weeks even, before finally succumbing. Your choice."

The scholar's face turned deathly pale. His eyes flickered toward the mangled corpse on the floor, then back to the dwarf standing before him. The mere thought of whatever these men might do to him broke whatever resolve he had

left.

"I-I'll tell you!" he blurted out in panic. "I'll take you there!"

His voice trembled as the words poured out of him in a frantic manner.

"They're deeper inside the mountain... the newest batch hasn't been processed yet. They're being kept in a holding chamber until the next round of

experiments begins!"

Krummor's eyes narrowed. "Move."

The terrified scholar nodded frantically and began leading them down a narrow

corridor that sloped deeper into the mountain. The further they went, the colder the air became. Of course, on the way, they slaughtered even more

cultists.

Heavy iron doors lined the passageways, and the smell of chemicals and rot lingered in the tunnels. None of the men spoke as they followed the scholar

through the twisting passages.

At last, he stopped before a thick reinforced door

Behind it... was the chamber where the Cult kept the most recent batch of "test

subjects".

Edward's heart bled from what he had witnessed along the way. Without hesitation, he pushed open the giant iron doors.

The chamber beyond was dim. For a moment, there was only darkness, then faint sounds of breathing reached his ears. As light from the corridor spilled inside, panicked cries and frightened whispers echoed through the room. Edward stepped forward and saw rows of iron cages filling the chamber.

Inside them were children...

Dozens of them huddled together like livestock waiting for slaughter. Many

were thin and filthy, their small hands gripping the bars as they stared at the

newcomers with terrified eyes.

Edward's expression twisted into rage and grief.

Slowly, he turned around.

His bloodsho gaze locked onto the scholar.

Then he spoke to his men.

"Kill him..." his voice was cold and shaking with fury.

He gnashed his teeth and added:

"Kill him slow... make him suffer!"
