Chapter 1647 Ulric's Merits

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Ulric's orders were simple: strike the enemy's supply lines.

When he received them, he didn't even ask for a squad. He was always used to moving and fighting alone. It was alone that he shone the best.

And so he argued that he alone would be enough for the mission assigned to him. One Magus - especially someone capable like him - could move fast and unnoticed, and definitely do more damage than a group.

But the Dark King didn't agree.

For the mission assigned to Ulric was a dangerous one. The enemy Mana Vortex Magi numbered a dozen, as for the rest of the magi and mortals numbered close to a hundred.

No matter how powerful and capable a Magus Ulric was, the Dark King would not send him for such a mission alone.

These weren't the Empire's lands where Ulric was used to wandering by himself. They were deep within enemy territory.

And so a dozen Mana Vortex Magi were assigned to him.

Ulric may or may not have groaned before the Dark King at the time. Regardless, he didn't complain. He accepted it and moved out with his men.

He was a Magus who specialized in the School of Enchantment. He was not the type to destroy his enemies head-on.

No. He was the kind that got inside someone's mind, twisted their thoughts, gently caressed their emotions, lowered their guards, befriended them, and then... butchered them.

Moreover, he wasn't just an arcane spellcaster.

He also fought in close range. Having grown up alone, traveled alone, and lived alone for most of his life, naturally, he had to learn skills that would help him in close-quarter combat.

After all, a Magus still needed time, no matter how brief, to cast spells. That was why Ulric made it a necessity to also be a close-ranged fighter.

So he built his assault plan around his merits.

Just like the Dark King's orders, Ulric's plan was also simple. Well... simple, according to him.

He would pretend to be a misfortunate traveler, lying beside a broken cart in the middle of the road. The setup would look convincing. After all, there'd be an upturned wheel, scattered supplies, and a man who seemed more helpless than dangerous.

When the Haynam Empire's supply caravan approached, it would slow down. The Magi guarding at the front would move in to check on the situation. That was when Ulric would act.

Using spells from the School of Enchantment, he would subtly influence their senses and judgment. A small pull on their attention, a slight easing of suspicion, just enough to make them lower their guard and stop closer than they should.

He didn't need all of them. Just the ones at the front. Once they were within reach, he would drop the act and then...

Magic Missile!

The spell struck the unsuspecting fool in the head. There was no defence, and certainly no time to react. The mana orb hit clean. The man's skull gave way instantly, blood and fragments spraying out as his body dropped where he stood.

For a brief second, everything froze...

The other Mana Liquefaction Magi - seven, to be precise - near the cart gaped, caught completely off guard. Their formation stalled, thier focus snapping toward the fallen man as they tried to make sense of what just happened.

That second was all Ulric needed.

He effortlessly pushed himself off the ground in one swift motion, no longer the strange, helpless traveler. The act was gone, and now, in his hands were twin axes. From the runes pulsating softly on their surface, they appeared to be Grade 3 Artifacts.

Before anyone could respond, he moved.

His body turned into a blur, faster than it should have been, really. The axes cut into the nearest Magi before a spell could even form. Steel met flesh, and then he was already onto the next.

Ulrich broke into a whirlwind of blood and steel as he weaved between the stunned Magi like a specter. Blood splashed across the road, across his clothes, and, of course, across his face.

He didn't stop at all.

To those gaping in the distance, he looked less like a man and more like a storm. A tempest of steel flashing, bodies falling, and crimson spreading across the ground faster than anyone could react.

Four seconds...

That was all it took for him to blast open the Mana Vortex Magus's head, then go on to slaughter the seven other Mana Liquefaction Magi.

The bodies of his latest victims hadn't even fallen to the ground when Ulrich turned to the rest of the supply caravan.

Both axes came to rest on his shoulders, their edges still wet with blood. He stood there for a brief moment, calm in the middle of the carnage.

A strand of hair had fallen over his eyes. He blew it aside like it was nothing.

The Haynam Empire had never expected an attack this deep in their own lands, and it showed. They hesitated, confused and unprepared.

Ulric took advantage of that moment. He raised his hand and whispered,

"Alright, lads, show them what you got."

From the shadowy woods, a volley of poisoned arrows shot out. A hundred

shafts cut through the air all at once and fell into the convoy before any of

them could properly brace.

Drivers, mortal guards, and even Mana Foundation Magi dropped where they stood, some killed instantly, while others collapsed in pain.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Magi had managed to defend themselves against the sudden attack, right after reeling in from the shock of Ulric massacring the

Magi.

The formation broke further. But before they could recover... more attacks followed.

From the same shadows, small glass vials containing bright orange liquid were thrown in high arcs. They landed among the wagons, under the carts, and

between groups of men.

And then they exploded.

Fire and force ripped through the supply convoy. Wood splintered, supplies caught fire, spell components combusted, and Magi were thrown off their feet. The road turned into chaos in mere seconds.

Ulric didn't move from his spot. As the brilliant flames from the successive explosions reflected in his gray eyes, he couldn't help but murmur: "Maybe having some allies around isn't such a bad thing after all..."
