While the battle between the two Mana Core Magi raged on, the military outpost was embroiled in chaos.Edward's initial attack had destroyed several buildings. Moreover, several of the Haynam Magi had perished as collateral.
Yet, the Dark King's men's work wasn't over…
Huddled quietly in a dark alley between two buildings, Ulric, Valerian, and the others had gathered. They had grim looks on their faces as their mission was far from over.
Every one of them looked apprehensive. Except, of course, Valerian. The young dragon seemed quite nonchalant. Haughty, even.
"Ulrich, they took away our spell components," A Magus spoke up. "How are we to burn the warehouses to the ground?"
A tense atmosphere settled over the group. The distant sounds of explosions echoed in their ears, causing them to feel even more grim. Thankfully, Edward was taking care of the enemy Mana Core Magus. Now, they had to take care of everything on their end.
Ulric turned to the cute little gray cat perched on his shoulder, and awkwardly asked, "You don't happen to have spare material components, do you?"
"Myu?" Valerian tilted his head. "Why would I have spare? Unlike you, I don't require material components to cast spells."
That's how spell-casting worked for beasts of magic. Unlike, humans — and most humanoid species, in general — they didn't need material, physical, and model components.
Their bodies were naturally attuned to casting spells. Mana flowed through them as easily as blood, shaped by instinct rather than technique. They didn't have to study magic, for they were magic. Least of all dragons, the highest among magical creatures.
"Ver well then." Ulrich sighed. He turned to his men and added in a solemn voice, "We improvise, adapt, and overcome."
After coming up with a new plan, the dozen Magi separated into groups of three and scattered in different directions.
Ulric decided to move alone.
No, not alone. Valerian had decided to tag along. This was the first time he was given so much agency by his dear brother. Of course, he knew this was only possible because he had proven his strength to Adam in the years they spent in Mabi.
"Marvelous!" Standing on Ulrich's shoulders and leaning against the back of his head, Valerian clapped in delight as he saw the chaos around him.
"Ulrich, let's burn this town to the ground!"
"…Sure," Ulrich muttered awkwardly.
Never in his life had he imagined that there would come a day when a dragon would ride his shoulders.
A dragon!
Riding his shoulders!
The purple amulet around Valerian's furry neck flashed, and the next moment, a vial containing a bright orange liquid materialized in his paws.
"Myu!" The little guy chucked the vial toward a nearby building.
BOOM!
Valerian threw his head back and laughed boisterously. "Burn! Burn! Buuurn!"
Ulrich nearly stumbled in his footsteps as the force of the explosion brushed against him. His mouth agape, his lifted his head slightly and blurted out, "You have Potions of Explosion?! Why didn't you say so! You could have given the lads some!"
"No, no, no." Valerian shook his head. "I don't have enough potions, human."
He rested his paws on Ulrich's head. "Besides, they're going to steal material components from the corpses of the enemy, no? Everything's going to be fine!"
Ulrich was suddenly at a loss for words. No, not suddenly. He had been ever since Valerian arrived.
Why did this little cat treat this war as a sport? People were dying left and right, and this little guy was taking pleasure in all the death and destruction?
What a mad cat!
He couldn't help but think incredulously.
Just as he was about to turn the corner, his eyes narrowed. Valerian turned serious as well. Both of them had sensed it.
There were enemies. And they were close!
A few moments later, they stepped onto the main road. Ahead, a group of soldiers led by a Mana Vortex Magus had just exited a warehouse.
At the same time, both sides saw each other and… froze.
For a brief second, no one moved.
And then…
Thunder!
Lightning streaked in the distance, giving both parties the signal to make their moves.
"Take cover!" Valerian roared in excitement as he leapt from Ulrich's shoulders and bolted toward the group of Magi.
Ulrich didn't need to be told twice. He quickly sprinted to the side and entered a building.
Meanwhile, the little gray cat, his topaz eyes gleaming, rushed forward.
"I am mighty!" He screamed, nimbly dodging a series of magical projectiles hurled toward him.
"I am powerful!" Valerian's eyes narrowed, and his expression hardened.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
All kinds of projectiles — ice, fire, earth, poison, and even lightning — were hurled at the little guy. However, his motions were fluid, and his frame was small and dexterous as he weaved through the attacks and finally arrived before the enemy.
"I am Valerian the Strong!"
The gray cat leapt from the ground, his small body moving faster than expected. His mouth stretched wide, and invisible waves of psychic energy pulsed outward.
He landed lightly on the shoulders of a Mana Liquefaction Magus. The man didn't even have time to react. His body stiffened as the energy hit him, his thoughts disrupted in an instant.
A heartbeat later, Valerian pushed off and landed on the ground. Behind him, the Magus stood frozen. His eyes were glazed, and his mind had gone still.
One by one, the young mind dragon moved through them. He leapt from one man to another, each jump quick and precise. Every time he landed, his mouth opened, and he released a burst of Dragon Breath.
His attacks weren't loud at all. They were silent, but deadly. Each target froze where they stood, their bodies going slack, and their minds shutting down way before they could even react.
By the time others understood what was happening, it was already too late.
Finally, after dealing with the last of the underlings, Valerian leapt in the air and rushed toward the Mana Vortex Magus.
"Perish, human!" the young dragon roared.
However, the Mana Vortex Magus already had enough time to prepare.
As Valerian closed in mid-air, the man tightened his grip on his sword and swung without hesitation.
Valerian's confident expression froze.
For a split second, his topaz eyes widened. They flashed with shock, and then… fear.
The man's strike cut through his small frame without resistance. The blade passed through the young dragon cleanly, splitting him in two before he could react.
Lightning rumbled in the distance.
And hot blood sprayed on the ground…
