The streets of Amberfall were full of activity.Despite the war on the horizon, the people went about their days in the usual
manner. Although underneath the calm facade, there was a faint sense of restlessness.
However, that did not matter. Because they knew they would be protected by their wise king. They had placed great faith in him.
For generations, the Fireborne family had continued to rule over them and protect them from all danger. So why would any of that change now?
So despite the uneasy turbulence beneath the surface, life in Amberfall continued nevertheless. Because of its status as a great trading nation, the shortage of food and other supplies barely lasted a day or two before they were replenished.
The influx of Magi from the Union in the streets of Amberfall gave the locals a great sense of safety as well. As a result, in the past few years, theft and other crimes had diminished greatly.
But on this day, the royal palace was sent into an uproar. And it wasn't because of any foreign enemy.
Word quickly spread that the princess had returned. It was a joyous occasion. Everyone in the palace, from servants to footmen, to chief stewards and chamberlains, began preparing for the princess's arrival.
"M-My Lord, I swear I told her to wait right here!" The guard who had earlier questioned Anna had returned to the western gates.
And he had brought along with him none other than Prince Marlow and Kasper York.
"So where is she then?" The elderly Kasper roared at him.
"P-Please wait, my lord!" The guard was sweating profusely.
He hurried to the captain of the guards nearby and blurted out, "C-Captain! That girl... I mean, the princess... where is she?! She was right here, wasn't she?" "Princess? What do you mean?" The captain of the guards blinked in confusion.
The guard turned pale. "That lady with the red hair! She was just here! There was a cat on her shoulder, too! Surely, you couldn't have forgotten! A-Am I... dreaming?"
"Hmm." The captain stroked his chin, frowning. He then turned to the prince and said solemnly, "Your Highness, I have no idea what he's talking about."
The guard shuddered. He could already imagine the faces of the prince and the head of the royal guards. And as expected... when he turned around, the two of them were looking at him with fierce expressions.
Kasper York waved his hand and ordered the men. "Throw this fool into the dungeon! Make him starve for three days! He might as well lose some damn weight."
While the guards awkwardly apprehended that guard and dragged him into the city, he continued to scream, 'My Lords, I wasn't lying! She really is here! Or at least, she claimed to be the princess-"
One of the other guards quickly cut him off. "Shut up already. Speak another word, and the prince will have your head!"
Meanwhile, Kasper York finally turned to Marlow and said, "Your Highness, let us return."
Marlow remained standing with a thoughtful expression. Scores of people
entered through the western gates every second, some staring at him with awe, while others gasped in fear. It wasn't every day that they got to lay eyes on royalty, after all.
Marlow let out a heavy sigh and turned away. The pair was escorted by guards, flanking them on both sides. He couldn't help but murmur softly, "But Kasper, what if she's really here? That guard wouldn't suddenly lose his mind now, would he?"
He, along with his parents, had been in constant communication with Anna ever since Adam's public hearing in Ravenfell. After coming out of the Soaring River Secret Plane, she would write to them almost every month. So they had a fair idea of her whereabouts.
In fact, the information they had about her and the Dark King's army was more accurate than the whispers and rumors circulating in Europa.
"If she was here, wouldn't she have notified us beforehand?" Kasper said in a thoughtful tone. "We haven't heard anything from her for a year now. And six months ago..."
He didn't finish the words. By now, everyone in Europa, especially in the Sovereign Union, knew what had taken place half a year ago.
The Uprising of Jomuran.
Already, scribes had begun recording the tale, their inks flowing fast as words spread. In taverns and courts alike, bards gave it voice, turning the events into a song before the smoke had even cleared.
They spoke of the Dark King's heroism and bravery.
Of how he fought countless Mana Core Magi and their undead knights. How he broke their ranks, shattered their defenses, and struck them down one by one,
all by himself.
They sang of the prison's fall, of chains breaking, of doors opening, and of thousands of prisoners rising from the depths, freed from the grasp of the
Haynam Empire.
Some called it an exaggeration, while others called it a myth in the making.
But one thing was clear...
The song of the Dark King was quickly spreading through Europa.
"Son of Tron..." Marlow murmured.
"Quite pompous, wouldn't you say?" Kasper twirled the end of his mustache as he let out a soft chuckle.
"Well, as long as our princess is with him, no harm should befall her," he added.
"On the contrary," Marlow said with a frown. "She is now in the center of all
troubles."
Escorted by the guards, the pair soon reached the heart of Amberfall and arrived before the towering gates of the palace.
However, the atmosphere was strange. The attendants and maids inside the palace were rushing back and forth with excited looks on their faces. Even the
guards stationed at the gates seemed oddly joyous.
"What's the matter?" Kasper asked one of the guards.
The guard said with a brilliant smile. "My lord, she has returned! The princess...
she's here!"
For a brief moment, Marlow stood frozen in shock. Then, he broke into a sprint and entered through the gates. He asked the palace staff on the way about the princess's whereabouts and finally arrived at the grand courtyard.
And there, he saw her.
He saw them.
Queen Amira sat on a cushioned chair, tears of joy streaming down her face. King Maximillian stood behind her, his hand on her shoulder, smiling dotingly.
And there was someone else with them.
A figure in crimson hair knelt before the queen, her head resting on her lap. And beside her, a gray cat stood vigil.
