"We must set aside our past differences."In a dimly lit chamber, several powerful figures had gathered. They sat at a stone round table, their gaze locked onto the figure who had just spoken.
He wore tattered robes, his face concealed beneath the cowl. A wooden staff leaned beside him on the edge of the seat. And a lantern was kept in front of him, radiating a dim ghostly light.
Though he appeared to be a poor vagabond, none at the table looked down upon him. He was a powerful Magus, a mysterious figure who had only just recently made his presence known to them.
He was the leader of the Shadow Sect.
And at the table sat the heads of the Nine Great Sects and Clans.
"A great war is on the horizon. Unlike anything we have ever seen," said the Shadow Sect's leader. "We must unite!"
He had tried to get the Unorthodox Faction on board, but he found out the hard way that the organizations in that faction were under the firm control of the Hidden Ruler.
The newly formed third faction, Heavenly Demon Divine Cult, had chosen to be neutral as they had been in the many wars that took place in the recent past.
So the Shadow Sect's leader could only make do with what he had. And that was to gather the leaders of the Nine Great Sects and Clans, and try to unite them under one banner to face the Cult of Bones.
He had been trying to convince them for the past several hours now. However, these people did not take well to anything related to foreigners.
They did not wish for outlanders to meddle in their affairs, and they most certainly didn't want to help them in any manner. Surface-level trade was as far as they were willing to go.
But now, this mysterious leader of the Shadow Sect had appeared from
nowhere and was suddenly urging them to get involved in a war that took place beyond the mystical lands of Yen-Lu. It was obvious that their reaction would be a cold refusal.
"Why should any of us care whether they die or not?" The Patriarch of the Nakamura Clan spoke in contempt as he stroked his long white beard.
"As long as they wage their little war in their own lands, why should we intervene? Let them kill each other!"
Many Magi at the table shared the same sentiment. They nodded in approval. Some even cast unfriendly gazes toward the Shadow Sect's leader, wondering if this was why he had summoned all of them. If it was, then it was just a waste of
time.
"It is not a little war," the Shadow Sect's leader said in a grim voice.
"And it most certainly will not be restricted to their lands. On the surface, it may appear that they're fighting among themselves, but the true enemy is not of this world."
The elderly man rose to his feet and said fiercely, "The enemy comes from distant stars, and they mean to destroy our world!"
He had been in constant communication with Adam, so he was naturally more aware of this war than anyone else in the room. He knew about the threat of the devils and that the Cult of Bones was planning to sacrifice each and every life on this planet to them.
Because of the sheer gravity of the situation, he had pulled so many strings, used favors where he could, and force where he couldn't, to gather all these powerful hedgmons of Yen-Lu together in this room. But their hatred and contempt for foreigners had clouded their judgment.
"I've heard enough," the monk of the Jingfa Sect rose to his feet. He looked toward the Shadow Sect's leader and cupped his fists. "Please do come to our sect for tea if you'd like, but I will not partake in any discussions relating to outlanders."
With that said, he slowly walked out of the chamber.
The leader of the Yunhai Sect stood up next. But he wasn't as polite as the monk. He spat on the table and cursed, "What a waste of time!" With that, he stomped away in annoyance.
"If the war does arrive at our doorstep, the Nakamura Clan will naturally help," said the Patriarch of the Nakamura Clan. "But until then..."
He let his words hang in the air, but the meaning was clear. He cupped his fists and then departed as well. One by one, the rest of the sect leaders and clan patriarchs also walked out of the chamber.
Only three Magi hadn't left: the leader of the Qingyun Bang, the patriarch of the Tsuitsui Clan, and the sect leader of the Baihua Sect.
Bai Tianji and Dokuto Tsuitsui stayed back because of a shocking piece of news that the Shadow Sect's leader had revealed to them in private.
As for the reason why Hong, the Beggar of Clouds, chose to remain... they did not know.
The old man in ragged, patched-up robes chuckled, displaying his yellowed teeth.
"Must a beggar need a reason to save the world?" he cackled. Then, he took out a gourd of strong liquor and began drinking in large mouthfuls, ignoring the others in the room.
The Shadow Sect's leader glanced at the Beggar of Clouds and respectfully cupped his fists. "You have my gratitude."
At last, he turned to Bai Tianji and Dokuto Tsuitsui. One was arguably the greatest swordsman in all of Yen-Lu, while the other's clan consisted of three Mana Core Magi, including himself.
Out of the many factions of Yen-Lu, three of the most powerful ones had joined his cause. It was not nothing. And the Shadow Sect's leader was grateful for all
the help he could get.
"So..." The Poison Blade, Dokuto Tsutsui, began. "Is what you say the truth?"
Bai Tianji, the Blossom Blade, observed everything in silence. His eyes
narrowed, and a cold gleam flickered in them.
Dokuto Tsuitsui continued, "That boy.... Has he always been an outlander?"
The Shadow Sect's leader silently nodded as he took his seat.
Dokuto couldn't help but frown lightly, recalling the times he had spent with
the enigmatic, blind young man.
He finally asked, "Is Ao even his real name?"
"No." The Shadow Sect's leader sighed, shaking his head.
"His name... is Adam Constantine."
