At the Empire's central camp's command tent, the arrival of Rekan and the other shadowkins had momentarily thrown the soldiers into chaos. But after the shadowkin showed the commanders an identification token given to them by Leland Haynam, they visibly calmed down. Still, it was a surreal feeling for them to gaze upon a foreign species.
One of the Mana Core-level cultists couldn't help but voice out his opinion, "But that man… he is that Dark King! We cannot recklessly charge at him."
Rekan turned to him with a light frown. With a thick accent, he spoke in the local tongue, "That man is only one man. Why are you all so afraid of him?"
"That's because you don't know his legends," the cultist answered with a nervous gulp. "Just the other day, he arrived at the battlefield, infiltrated our camp, and casually killed four of our Mana Core Magi—"
"Silence." Rekan coldly interrupted him. "Send in all your men. The enemy camps are in chaos. This is an opportunity you don't want to miss. I will not repeat myself again."
"I-I understand." The cultist nodded. He quickly looked away when he noticed the cold gleam in the devil's eyes.
Right at that moment, the Dark King's cold voice echoed across the battlefield. It was tinged with helplessness, but also confidence.
"So you have chosen death."
It was a low, almost inaudible voice. But it sounded in everyone's ears through mysterious means.
"The arrogance of this lowly human!" One of the shadowkins spat coldly.
However, Rekan had turned incredibly solemn. Years of experience on the battlefield had sharpened his senses. His instincts were now telling him to be careful. Very careful.
He quickly sent a mental transmission to his men:
'Retreat to a safe distance. Remain in the shadows. Provide support only when you're certain. And record every little detail about this man's abilities.'
With that said, he dissolved into shadows and disappeared. His men quickly followed suit.
At the same time, across the battlefield, the Dark King withdrew his aura. The mana fluctuations around him were completely concealed. His hands turned into a blur, and he finished the hand seals for his spell.
In the next heartbeat, the ground beneath his feet rippled like the surface of water. And then, his figure plunged underground before completely disappearing out of sight.
"What?!"
"Where did he go!"
Back at the central command tent, the Mana Core Magi, who were actively watching the Dark King's movements, suddenly found themselves at a loss for words. The sensory Magi cast their magic, trying to locate him. But it was all futile.
Their army was getting ready to attack the Dark King, but the man had simply disappeared underground. Panic crept into their hearts.
"Defend yourself!"
"Watch your six!"
The commanders barked out orders one after another, their faces visibly pale. And their so-called allies, the shadowkins, had also retreated.
"Cowards!" One of the commanders cursed aloud as he gave an order for the army to move. "Advance! Advance to—"
Suddenly, he felt a tremor underneath his feet.
His eyes trembled, and he lowered his head, just in time to see a pair of hands emerging from the ground as if breaking out of the surface of water. The hands tightly grabbed his ankles like pincers and pulled him into the ground.
The Mana Core Magus screamed as he found his body viciously yanked below ground. At the same time, a figure in dark robes and a pointed hat emerged.
A moment later, the Empire's commander found everything below his head buried in the ground, while in front of him… stood the Dark King, pointing two fingers at him.
Magic Missile!
The Magus's head exploded, and blood, grey matter, and bone shards sprayed across the ground.
While everyone around watched with stunned and terrified expressions at what had just transpired, the Dark King prepared the magical components for the next spell.
Suddenly, his eyes narrowed, and his hands froze abruptly.
A nearby shadow rippled, and a devil shot out from it, wielding twin daggers. In the blink of an eye, the shadowkin was already behind the Dark King, the tips of his blades almost about to plunge into his skull.
Fast! Adam exclaimed inwardly and reacted at once, dropping low and rolling smoothly into a prone position.
The ashen figure zoomed overhead. The shadowkin didn't even land on the ground. Instead, it slipped into the shadows and disappeared once again.
Annoying. Adam snorted.
In that split second, he exerted strength in his limbs and pushed himself off the ground. In midair, his hands turned into a blur, and he inhaled a deep breath.
Rank 4 Spell: Great Flaming Breath!
He aimed straight at the command tent and blew a torrent of flames from his mouth.
The fire poured forward in overwhelming volume, like a blazing waterfall crashing down upon the camp. Dozens of weaker Magi were caught in it and burned instantly, their defences shattered before they could react.
But the enemy Mana Core Magi had just enough time. Mana barriers flared to life around them, holding the infernos as the flames roared past, scorching everything in their path.
If the shadowkin earlier hadn't interrupted him, Adam would have killed several of the enemy commanders. But now he had lost the element of surprise, and the Mana Core Magi were on guard.
Well… at least their attention is no longer on the Union's army, he thought to himself as he descended from the air and landed amid a sea of Empire soldiers.
The Magi yelped in fear as they saw the raven-haired youth suddenly appear among them.
Rank 4 Spell: Winds of Calamity!
The air in the surroundings twisted and roared. A violent surge of wind burst outward, turning into countless sharp and visible wind blades as they tore through the surrounding Magi. Hundreds of men were torn apart by the wind blades and died gruesome deaths.
Adam was not even paying attention to the men that he had just butchered. No. Instead, his focus was mainly on the shadows on the ground. The devil assassins were proving to be quite the annoyance.
Tyrannical mana gathered around his fists, and he turned toward the eastern camp. The plan was to cut the head of the snakes and plunge the army into chaos, just like the enemy had done to them.
And the Dark King was going to do exactly that.
