What… is happening? The thought echoed persistently in Rekan's mind as he and the shadowkins gave chase to the Dark King.
He was sure that one of his daggers had pierced through the human's heart. Yet Adam proved to be tenacious enough to keep moving despite the grievous injury, and even slip their pursuit.
Just what kind of enemy was he dealing with? He couldn't help but wonder…
He passed by the spot where Adam had just been standing, the place where he had viciously removed the daggers embedded in his chest.
Rekan saw the human's blood pooled on the broken cobbled street. The blood remained there. Motionless. Noticing that, he couldn't help but frown. Something felt odd, but he just couldn't put a finger on it.
ROAR!
The sound of the Shadow's screech pierced his eardrums, causing him to grimace slightly.
He turned toward the source and saw that Adam had already appeared near the half-broken obelisk. As a result, the Shadow had begun to wantonly attack him as well as the shadowkins who were after him.
Rekan's frown deepened even further.
Why has the Shadow suddenly gone mad? Why is it attacking them so desperately?
He turned back to the pool of crimson blood on the ground, his face darkening. Something strange was going on. The peculiar feeling kept gnawing at the edge of his mind. But he couldn't understand what it was.
A shadowkin's agonizing scream snapped him out of his senses. Rekan turned to see that one of the devils had been injured by the Shadow.
Damn it! Rekan cursed indignantly and joined the rest of the shadowkins.
Meanwhile, the pool of blood on the ground remained still.
Eerily still.
***
The Shadow's figure turned between incorporeal and tangible as it lashed at anyone who dared come close.
Adam had noticed this peculiarity earlier. There was some strange connection between the Shadow and the obelisk. It seemed to be fiercely guarding it for whatever reason. And that was exactly why he had drawn the devils there.
His gamble had paid off. The moment one of the devils came within range, the Shadow seemed to have forgotten all about its cowardice and madly attacked the shadowkin despite suffering an injury itself.
Adam's eyes narrowed, his dark pupils gleaming with a sharp light. Ignoring the pain in his injuries, he kept getting closer to the broken obelisk, trying to draw the Shadow's attention. And as soon as he succeeded in doing so, he quickly retreated.
Like this, he went back and forth and pulled all the shadowkins into a battle with the Shadow.
"You bastard!" Rekan appeared behind him, screaming in fury. He raised his hands high, daggers gripped tightly in his hands.
Adam quickly turned toward him. Seeing the twin daggers viciously come at him, he tried his best to dodge. But in the end, one of the daggers ended up cutting a deep, vertical line across his torso.
Still, he had managed to achieve his objective.
Because just a moment later, the Shadow had taken notice of them. It rushed toward both Adam and Rekan and struck them with all four arms.
Adam was hurled into the distance, spraying mouthfuls of blood in the air. Meanwhile, Rekan managed to block the Shadow's attack, but still got heavily injured in the process.
Seeing that Rekan still remained standing on his feet, the Shadow let out a furious roar. Its hands turned into a blur as it kept attacking the shadowkin leader over and over again.
On the other side of the obelisk, one of the shadowkins had just gotten to his feet after defending against a powerful blow of the Shadow.
Suddenly, a pair of blood-stained hands emerged from the darkness behind him and smoothly grabbed his skull. One gripped the chin, while the other clasped the top of the head.
The shadowkin's eyes trembled in horror. He didn't even have the chance to let out a cry for help, when suddenly…
Crack!
The Dark King viciously snapped the devil's head.
Without waiting a moment longer, he turned toward the other shadowkins in the near distance and shouted at them, "What's the matter with you lot? Are you tired?"
The three shadowkins turned toward him, their faces filled with rage. But when they gazed at the corpse of their comrade at Adam's feet, thier expression twisted into something even darker.
And what he did next caused all three of them to abandon reason.
Adam spat on the corpse's face. Then he slowly raised his foot and…
Splat!
"That's what you get," Adam said, his lips curling into a taunting smirk. "That's what you get for messing with me!"
"How dare you!"
"You bastard!"
The three shadowkins erupted in a tide of anger and humiliation. They didn't even think twice before charging at the human.
Adam, on the other hand, grinned even wider. Instead of fleeing to the depths of the city, he rushed straight toward the half-broken obelisk. And as expected, the shadowkins madly followed after him.
The Shadow, who was fighting Rekan, noticed the shift. His form quickly turned intangible, and he flew toward Adam and the shadowkins.
"No!" Rekan screamed, his heart thumping in fear.
He ran after the Shadow, trying to prevent it from attacking his comrades. But after taking a few steps, he suddenly froze. His expression turned pale when he realized something.
Who were the shadowkins chasing?
Hadn't the Dark King just been hurled past him into the distance by the Shadow just moments ago?
A chill crawled down his spine, causing him to shudder. He quickly realized why he'd felt the foreboding earlier.
The blood! He screamed inwardly as he subconsciously started to retreat.
It didn't return!
Right at that moment, just as Rekan had managed to connect the dots, he felt a strong shift in the air. Not just him, but even the Shadow and the shadowkins felt the change.
But it was too late.
Too late to retreat. Too late to slip into the shadows.
A figure appeared above the town square at some point. Or perhaps… he had always been there.
His eyes shone with a divine light, intricate flower patterns etched into his tenebrous pupils.
Between his hands, an extraordinary mass of mana gathered, collapsing inward, forming a singular point. A vortex of tyrannical energy spiraled toward its core.
Then, it compressed.
In the next heartbeat, the single point burst outward.
And then…
Darkness swallowed everything.
