A thousand crimson weapons tore through the skies like a storm of blood.Spears, swords, halberds, daggers, and countless other weapons descended from above, covering the heavens in an endless red deluge.
And when they struck, the earth below exploded under the impact.
Massive shockwaves tore through the battlefield as countless red weapons pierced the ground one after another, shattering stone and splitting the land open.
Entire sections of the crater collapsed inward while clouds of dust, ash, and blood-colored energy erupted into the air. The storm continued without pause, turning the battlefield into a scene of complete destruction as though the heavens themselves were trying to erase everything below.
Beyond the edge of the crimson storm, the Heavenly Demon stood silently with his hands clasped in a seal as he channeled mana to sustain the spell.
Although he had spoken confidently to the lich earlier about the Dark King returning from the dead, he still couldn't help but give rise to a foreboding feeling well up in his heart.
Unbeknownst to him, a dark frown had appeared on his face.
Just what the hell is up with him and being banished to other realms in the midst of battles? He thought to himself with dark humor.
That being said… there are fewer than a handful of places he could currently be in. If he were somewhere in the spirit world, he would have quickly found his way back with the help of Spirit World Traversal.
That means it's highly likely he's trapped inside some plane within the spirit world with strict laws governing it.
And judging by the planes that the lich has access to… it narrows the possibility down to only one place.
The Underworld!
When the Heavenly Demon came to that conclusion, his expression darkened.
Even he knew what that meant.
The Underworld was a realm of the dead, a place where living souls never returned from. For countless years, not a single living being had ever managed to escape it once they were dragged inside.
It was a place that stood completely separated from the land of the living.
And anyone trapped there was as good as dead.
A drop of cold sweat trickled down the side of his head as realization slowly dawned on him.
No way…
Is he… is he really going to die?
He couldn't help but think the worst possible outcome.
No! The Heavenly Demon inwardly refused.
There is one way for him to return… If he transforms himself into an undead creature, and if I perform a necromancy ritual here and summon him from the Underworld, then there's a chance!
For that, I need time to perform the ritual. With the connection we share, I'm sure I'll be able to summon him from that plane.
But the question remains…
Will he be willing to turn into an undead?
The Heavenly Demon knew better than anyone how much disgust and hatred Adam held toward Necromancers and the undead. Now, left with no other choice, would that same man be willing to turn himself into one of those undead creatures just to survive?
The Heavenly Demon knew the answer to that.
And so, he resolved himself to make all the necessary preparations to summon the Dark King from the Underworld. But before that, he first had to deal with the enemy, then escape to a safe location where he could perform the necromancy ritual and forge a pact with the Underworld.
But was the enemy really that easy to deal with?
After having lived in the shadows of the Cult Leader for centuries, the Heavenly Demon knew better than most just how powerful the lich truly was.
If he wanted to incapacitate the lich, then he would have to use every last spell in his arsenal.
And just as that thought crossed his mind, the Heavenly Demon sensed a disturbance within the crimson storm.
Soon, the lich's figure became visible through the bloody rain of weapons. A layer of mana barrier covered him from above, shielding him from the endless barrage crashing around him.
At the same time, the Blood Binds wrapped around his figure began to tear apart one by one. Then, slowly, the lich rose to his feet, his cold and murderous words echoing through the storm.
"You traitorous scum," he said in an even voice. "How dare you betray me?"
The Heavenly Demon's lips curled into a taunting smirk as he weaved another series of hand seals.
"Wanna know something else?" he asked, his tone dripping with venom. "I was the one who leaked information about Winter's movements all those years ago. In fact… I was also the one supplying the Sovereign Union with all the critical intelligence all this time."
He paused briefly as he finished weaving the hand seals.
"It was me who told Tian Di about your secret research base in Ironridge."
The more the lich listened to the man speak, the more enraged he became. He remembered all the time he had suspected Marden of being the traitor, only to dismiss the thought again and again. Every time, he had convinced himself it was impossible.
After all, the slave imprint should have prevented any betrayal.
But now, hearing the truth from Marden himself, the lich realized how wrong he had been all those years.
"After all that I gave you… this is how you repay me?"
The Heavenly Demon snorted in ridicule. "After all that you gave me?"
He raised his hand, and the storm of crimson weapons instantly shifted directions. The countless blades flying across the battlefield curved through the air like rivers of blood, surrounding the lich from every side.
Then they descended at once. Streams of red weapons rained down from all directions with even greater intensity, tearing through the air with a deafening force as they closed in on the lich from every angle, leaving him nowhere to escape.
At the same time, the Heavenly Demon activated the Hermit's lantern. He shifted his gaze toward the dark skies and saw the thunderclouds still raging from Adam's earlier spells. He then quickly cast several more hand seals.
In the next moment…
Boom!
The Cult Leader's mana suddenly erupted within the sanguine storm.
Every blood weapon surrounding him shattered apart at once, exploding into countless crimson fragments that scattered across the battlefield.
Then, before the Heavenly Demon could react, the lich shot forward through the rain of broken weapons like a bolt of black lightning.
"Even the Dark King couldn't take me down," he declared arrogantly. "What makes you think you can?"
He tore through the crimson downpour and appeared directly before the Heavenly Demon. Mana gathered around his gauntleted fist, and in the next moment, he struck violently.
But soon, the flames in the lich's sockets narrowed when he felt his attack pass straight through the Heavenly Demon's figure.
And before he could react, the air and mana around him turned unstable.
The dark skies above rumbled.
And then…
A pillar of lightning descended upon the lich.
