Dozens of [Magic Missiles] flashed through the twilight sky like falling stars. Each one left behind a blue trail of light as it carved through the air, relentlessly honing in on Wagner's fleeting figure from every direction.
Wagner moved without pause. He was an undead being, so he never tired. But this was a new body he was inhabiting, and he hadn't achieved full control over it yet. So he was quite miserable.
He darted across the battlefield, weaving between crumbling ruins and ancient trees as the barrage pursued him with terrifying precision.
One of the [Magic Missiles] slammed into the ground beside him, and the earth erupted, sending rock and soil flying in every direction. Another crashed through a cluster of ancient ruins, reducing centuries-old stonework to rubble in an instant. A third tore through a massive tree, uprooting it completely.
Explosions echoed one after another. Wherever the spells landed, destruction followed. And amidst the chaos, Wagner narrowly evaded danger time and time again.
Sometimes he twisted aside, allowing a missile to scream past his face. Other times, he erected hastily constructed [Mana Barriers] that shattered upon impact, buying him just enough time to survive the next attack.
He had to admit… Adam's mastery over magic was spectacular. Not only was the youth able to conjure so many [Magic Missiles] at once, but he was also able to direct each one individually, attacking from multiple directions simultaneously.
The entire battlefield had become a sea of detonations, with a lone figure desperately struggling to survive at its center.
Wagner's face was a mask of anger and helplessness. He was unable to utilize this new body to its full potential. There was never enough time, to begin with. He had never expected Adam to be waiting for him on that island, after all.
After dodging a series of explosions, he stepped onto a clearing. And right at that moment, his pupils constricted when he sensed an immense threat to his life. There was no one in the clearing. There were no more spells streaking in the skies. But he trusted his instincts.
His hands turned into a blur as he rapidly weaved seals and cast a spell.
[Limber Mesh]
Mana strings wrapped around Wagner's fingers as he spread his hands apart, weaving them into a thick web of dark energy.
At that very moment, Adam appeared before him like a ghost. The Blades of Fulgrim blazed in his hands as he slashed horizontally.
A tearing sound rang through the air as the flaming shortswords struggled to cut through the [Limber Mesh].
Adam's eyes narrowed. The next moment, he pulled back the blades, spun nimbly, and arrived at Wagner's side before delivering a solid roundhouse kick to the face.
Bam!
Adam's movements were so fast and precise that it almost looked as though he had teleported.
Wagner's hands were still positioned in front of him, focused on blocking the shortswords. The kick, however, came from an entirely different angle and struck him without warning.
The man was sent smashing through several more trees before colliding into a large boulder and collapsing to the ground in an undignified heap.
A moment later, Adam vaulted across the treeline and landed over a dozen meters away from Wagner.
The youth's eyes narrowed.
"Were you always this weak?" he asked contemptuously.
Half of Wagner's flesh had been stripped of flesh, exposing the ivory skull beneath and the eerie green flame dancing within the empty socket. The other half retained its pale, atrophied flesh, where a brown eye stared back with chilling intensity.
Although he showed an enraged and insulted look on the surface, inside, Aldo coldly calculated everything.
He had long since secretly cast a spell on Adam. A silent and insidious spell from the School of Enchantment.
[Crown of Hubris]
"To think that at one point I was even afraid of you," said the raven-haired youth, shaking his head in disdain.
"What's the matter, though?" he asked, raising an eyebrow in genuine curiosity.
"Having trouble adjusting? Is your best friend's body not quite what you expected? Didn't get enough time to settle into your new vessel? Should I come back in a few hours?"
Every word struck deep. Or at least, that's how Wagner portrayed himself.
"Don't look down on me, boy!" He spat through gritted teeth.
"Or what?" Adam raised his chin and said in a supremely condescending tone.
In the blink of an eye, Wagner cast [Gale Step] and used wind magic to enhance his speed. He appeared right before the youth and struck with his hand that was swirling with dark, necrotic energy.
Adam's eyes gleamed with a ruthless light. With his Sphere of Resonance working on overdrive, he had sensed the attack long before it arrived.
His legs blurred, and he sidestepped, using the smallest possible movement to evade the strike. As Wagner's attack whizzed past his ear, Adam's right hand curled into a claw and became coated in tyrannical mana.
Then he struck Wagner squarely in the shoulder.
[Hand of Doom: Coiling Palm Strike]
Cold blood sprayed through the air as Wagner's right arm was brutally torn from his shoulders
He didn't feel the pain, but he was stunned nevertheless. Adam was too fast, too powerful, too overbearing.
As shock gripped his dead heart and realization dawned on him that he would be unable to cast spells anymore, Wagner froze for a moment.
That brief moment was all Adam required. He spun swiftly and delivered a vicious sidekick.
Wagner's body curled like a shrimp as he was violently hurled into the distance once more. He crashed through several ancient trees before flying over a cliff and landing on the riverbank below.
Adam slowly made his way toward the cliff.
The distant roar of a waterfall brushed against his ears. The wind blew eerily for a moment before everything fell silent. Even the leaves ceased their rustling.
Only the sound of the waterfall remained, while countless stars in the night sky illuminated the grand finale of his battle with Aldo Wagner.
The clouds slowly drifted apart, allowing Selene and Luna to bear witness to this turning point in the planet's history.
Adam inhaled deeply as he put away the Blades of Fulgrim, strapping them to his back.
The time had come…
He leapt off the cliff and landed on the riverbank just a few meters away from his archnemesis.
Aldo Wagner sensed his arrival. A whimper escaped his lips, and his lone eye trembled with fear. He miserably pushed himself to his knees and began crawling away, desperately trying to flee.
"No," he wailed. "Get away! Get away from me!"
"Pathetic."
Adam flicked his hand.
[Wind of Emanation]
An invisible, razor-sharp blade of wind swept through the air and cleanly severed Wagner's legs below his knees.
"No… no… please!"
The mighty Cult Leader of the Cult of Bones begged as he desperately dragged his body away using his only remaining limb.
"Anything…" he screamed. "I'll give you anything you want! All the riches and knowledge I've accumulated… it's all yours!"
[Magic Missile]
Adam pointed his hand and shot an orb of pure mana at Wagner's hand, obliterating it effortlessly.
Even so… Aldo Wagner used his chin to drag himself away.
"I curse you, Constantine!" He roared in rage and terror. "You ruined everything! All my planning… all my schemes… you ruined it all!"
"Curse me all you want," Adam said as he slowly walked around the pitiful, miserable figure of the man he once looked up to.
He grabbed Wagner by the hair and hoisted him into the air.
Their gazes met, and Adam could see the fear in Wagner's one remaining eye.
"Please," Wagner begged meekly. "Please just give me one chance. One chance… that's all I ask."
Adam pulled his free hand back and drove it through Wagner's chest.
When his hand came out of the man's back, it was clutching a crystal…
The phylactery!
He could see the shock erupt in Wagner's face. In response, Adam's lips curled into a cocky smirk.
"That's right," he whispered into the dead man's ear. "I knew all along."
Shatter!
With a violent squeeze, Adam crushed Aldo Wagner's phylactery.
And at the very moment of death, Wagner's lips curled into a grin so wide that it twisted half of his hideous face.
He cast his final spell.
A spell that required no magical components.
A spell with only a simple prerequisite…
Its caster's death.
[Soul Migration]
When Aldo Wagner opened his eyes, he was standing within Adam's spirit sea.
