Genevieve stepped out of the lecture hall and into the sprawling grounds of the Sapphire Tower. The campus was beautiful as always. Stone pathways wound between green lawns and carefully tended flower gardens. Elegant lecture halls stood beside towering libraries and buildings.
Ancient trees cast cool shadows over courtyards where students gathered to study, debate, or simply enjoy the pleasant afternoon.
As she walked toward her residence building, she was greeted at every turn. And she returned each greeting with a pleasant smile and a polite word or two.
Some were fellow students. Others were junior Apprentices who admired her. A few were professors who knew her by name.
Genevieve was simply that kind of person.
She was approachable and genuinely kind. She had spent years building friendships and acquaintances throughout the academy. It seemed that nearly everyone she passed knew her, and she somehow remembered all of them in return.
By the time she reached the central courtyard, she had already stopped half a dozen times for brief conversations.
Since her duties at Sapphire Tower were finished for the day, Genevieve made her way back toward the student residences.
The weekend had finally arrived, and this evening she had plans.
One of her more affluent friends from Blue Borough was hosting a private gathering at her family’s manor, and Genevieve had already agreed to attend. Several of her closest lady friends would be there as well.
The occasion itself was hardly formal. There would be tea, pastries, and far too much conversation.
They would discuss the latest fashions arriving from overseas, exchange local gossip, speculate about scandals involving noble families, and debate recent events within Davos. No doubt someone would bring up academy rumors as well.
Genevieve found such gatherings pleasant.
And if she was being honest, she enjoyed spending time with her friends. The prospect of an evening filled with laughter and conversation brought a faint smile to her face as she continued across the campus.
This particular gathering would be attended by the daughters of Davosian nobles, along with several influential young women who held prominent positions within the city’s administration.
Genevieve belonged to neither group. She possessed no noble title and held no government office.
Yet no one questioned her invitation.
As one of Sapphire Tower’s most talented young Magi, her status spoke for itself. In a city like Davos, talent and potential often opened the same doors as wealth and noble blood.
Although it would be nice to have some money...
Her mind drifted to her current financial condition.
I’m never selling Grandpa’s artifacts, she thought.
So this rescue mission is going to have to do.
Hopefully the danger isn’t as bad as Professor Channing fears.
If I were a Herbalist like Adam, things would be much easier. I’d never participate in any dangerous missions.
Then another thought crossed her mind.
Hmm... I wonder if he’s joining us next week?
Lost in thoughts of the upcoming expedition, her finances, and a certain raven-haired youth, Genevieve continued down the stone pathway.
She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she failed to notice someone approaching from behind.
Only when the newcomer spoke did she snap back to reality.
"Magus Saint Laurent."
Slightly startled, Genevieve turned around. Her gaze landed on a familiar figure.
Isn’t she her attendant?
"Yes, how can I help you?" She asked politely.
The newcomer greeted her, then quickly cut to the chase.
"The Lady requests your presence at once."
Genevieve couldn’t help but feel slightly anxious inwardly.
After all, the headmistress of Sapphire Tower had just summoned her!
"After you," she replied softly.
As she followed the attendant to the Tower at the center of the campus, she couldn’t help but wonder what it was about.
***
The Lady of Sapphire Tower’s office occupied one of the highest levels of the great Magus tower.
Vast and circular in design, it was surrounded by tall arched windows that offered a sweeping view of Davos, the ocean beyond, and the academy grounds below.
"It is surprising Genevieve has caught... your attention."
A dark-skinned young woman with black hair and brown eyes sat on one of the luxurious sofas in the office’s seating area and poured tea into three cups.
This was Adeline Stark.
A human Magus.
And the current Lady of Sapphire Tower.
She placed one of the cups before the woman seated beside her. Dressed in white, the woman appeared middle-aged, with dark blonde hair and eyes as blue as the summer sky.
"Thank you, dear," the woman said gently as she accepted the tea.
This was Emily Damon.
Adeline Stark’s mentor.
And the former Lady of the Sapphire Tower.
"Had you been a little quicker, perhaps you would have gained a splendid apprentice for yourself," Emily said with a light chuckle.
"Perhaps..."
Adeline softly murmured as she pushed the third teacup toward the woman seated across from them.
This woman carried an air of mystery about her.
She wore a dark, high-necked gown that concealed nearly all of her skin. Only her fair hands were visible, adorned with two silver bangles that were likely magical artifacts. A delicate veil hid her face from view, making it impossible to discern her true appearance. Another product of magic.
Though the tea had been offered to her, she made no move to take the cup. She simply sat there in silence.
Adeline scoffed.
"Worried it might be poisoned?"
The veiled woman glanced at her and said in a gentle voice, "We are immune to poison."
Adeline set out a soft grunt of displeasure.
If the woman didn’t want to have tea, she should have said so.
What was the point of having Adeline go through the trouble of preparing it if she had no intention of drinking it in the first place?
Seated beside her, Emily couldn’t help but sigh helplessly. Despite all these years, her student still hadn’t quite learned to keep her temper in check.
Though she could understand why Adeline was so displeased.
After all, the veiled woman had come to her academy, and now wanted to take one of her students right from under her nose.
Worse still, it was only possible because Emily had permitted it in the first place.
But what could she do?
When one of the oldest and most powerful factions of humanity came calling, one answered.
Refusal was rarely an option.
And in this particular case, the request itself was not unreasonable. They were not asking for some random student.
They were asking for Genevieve Saint Laurent.
A young woman whose talent had already attracted the attention of far greater powers than Sapphire Tower.
