Genevieve felt the hair on the back of her neck stand on end.One moment, there was no one behind her. The next, someone had abruptly materialized seemingly out of thin air.
She slowly turned around, her gaze finally landing on the one who had just spoken.
She saw a boy no older than ten. He wore the same clothes as the small skeletal figure in the corner, except his were whole and well-kept. His skin was pale as a corpse’s, but it was his eyes that were the most terrifying.
There were no whites in them. Only endless black, as though darkness itself had filled his sockets.
The moment their eyes met, the little boy tilted his head and offered a small smile. He outstretched his hand and asked, "Sister, will you play with me?"
Genevieve froze.
She had never seen a ghost before. Yet she was certain that the one in front of her was definitely one.
An evil spirit!
"It makes sense."
Adam’s calm words echoed in the room.
Genevieve snapped out of her shock and fear. She drew closer to Adam and subconsciously held the hems of his tunic.
Inwardly, she continued to recite:
I acknowledge my fear.
I give it no command over me...
"This plane is sealed off from the outside world," Adam said matter-of-factly. "There is no access to the spirit world."
He looked the little boy in the eye and asked with a smile, "Isn’t that why you’re trapped here?"
The little boy’s smile gradually faded, replaced by a deep frown. He stared at Adam with a hurtful expression, then said:
"Mama, I don’t like him very much!"
Crack!
A sickening sound echoed in the dimly lit room.
Genevieve gasped and spun around.
A single fracture had appeared at the center of the mirror. It slowly spread, opening into a gateway to a place full of endless reflections, distant doors, and hidden mysteries.
Then, a pale hand shot out of the crack. Then another. The hands found purchase on the mirror’s surface and pulled. Moments later, a pale woman in a white gown and pitch-black eyes crawled out of the mirror.
She landed on all fours, her neck twisting in unnatural angles. Her pitch-black eyes found Adam, and her lips split open all the way to her ears, revealing needle-like teeth and a forked tongue.
Genevieve took sharp, rapid breaths, doing her best to steady her nerves. She repeated the invocation in her mind again and again, but this time, it wasn’t enough.
Ghosts.
Beings she had only ever read about in books. Creatures her grandfather used to frighten her with whenever she refused to go to bed.
And now, one — no, two — appeared before her without warning!
For the first time in a long while, she found herself completely helpless. And afraid.
"First time encountering an evil spirit?"
Then a gentle voice drifted into her ears, oddly soothing her nerves.
She turned to Adam and noticed him smiling at her. It wasn’t a smile of mockery. More like... a smile meant to make her feel safe.
His lips parted, and he said something that she’d remember for a long, long time.
"It’s fine to be afraid, Genevieve," he said. "Because it means you also have the chance to be brave."
He took a step forward and stood before her, shielding her from the evil spirit.
"Conjure a shield around you," he said. "These creatures are not something you can deal with, unless you can wield spirit energy."
The next moment, Genevieve noticed, much to her awe, that Adam’s hands were coated in a pristine, white energy.
And then, Valerian leapt from her arms and landed nimble on the ground. A heartbeat later, his paws, too, were augmented by spirit energy.
"Brother, I’ll take care of this one!"
"Be careful," Adam said. "Remember what I taught you."
Valerian turned into a blur and engaged with the little boy. Meanwhile, Adam took a calm step toward the woman in white, who now seemed too terrified of the energy augmenting his hands.
Genevieve snapped out of her thoughts and quickly activated two artifacts.
[Mana Shield] to protect her.
[Mute] to prevent any noise from escaping this room.
She then rapidly retreated to a corner, so as to not hinder Adam and Valerian.
He can wield spirit energy so effortlessly, she wondered, stunned.
Is he really human?
The result of the battle between Valerian and the little boy was already obvious. The spirit possessed strength equivalent to an Apprentice Magus. So the young dragon was toying with him.
Whereas the woman in white’s strength was equivalent to a Mana Core Magus. But Adam was no ordinary Mana Core Magus.
"A spirit with access to the mirror world," Adam said, intrigued. "I wonder if you pulled your other victims inside that mirror and finished them off."
Roar!
A ghostly shriek echoed through the room, but none of it managed to spill out.
But it had done its job, as Adam, Genevieve, and Valerian couldn’t help but grimace at the sound attack. It felt as if someone had stabbed a hundred needles into their eardrums.
The woman in white capitalized on this opportunity and pounced on Adam, her sharp claws poised to grab hold of him and kill him.
Adam disappeared from his spot.
The evil spirit’s claws swiped through nothing but empty air. Then, it felt a firm grip clutch her head and—
Bam!
Adam slammed the woman’s head to the ground. With his hand augmented by his pure spirit energy, he applied strength to his grip and obliterated the creature’s head.
Purple blood splattered on the ground and the walls. The woman’s headless body twitched for a few moments before falling still. A few seconds later, her remains dissipated into motes of light before quietly being devoured by Adam.
Across the room, the same fate awaited the little boy. After being killed by Valerian, its body dissipated into the air, and then was absorbed into the Lotus.
The whole ordeal lasted less than a minute.
It had looked simple, but Genevieve knew better. Without the ability to wield spirit energy and confront evil spirits, they would revive no matter how many times they were destroyed.
Evil spirits could only be killed with spirit energy.
This was known as exorcism.
Standing in the corner of a room, Genevieve watched in a daze as Adam picked up Valerian, rubbed his belly, and praised him for a job well done.
She couldn’t help but stare at him in amazement. Never before had she met someone who could wield spirit energy as naturally and fluently as mana.
What stunned her even more was the sheer purity of his spirit energy. It felt sacred, almost... divine.
The man named Constantine, it seemed, was a man of many secrets.
Once again, Genevieve found herself staring at him longer than was polite...
