Chapter 1880: Rotten Luck

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

’Seven souls have crossed our way.’

Adam thought of the elderly gypsy’s final, parting words.

Their team consisted of six members — Adam, Genevieve, Michael, Kara, Darren, and Koby.

Six.

Yet the old woman had claimed there were seven.

She couldn’t have possibly counted Valerian, could she?

Adam wondered with furrowed brows. His hand habitually reached toward his chin, and he stroked the stubble, falling into deep thought.

If she did, then there’s nothing to worry.

But if she didn’t include Valerian, then someone has followed us into this place.

And if I’m right... it very well could be that man.

No...

That creature!

A cold gleam flickered in Adam’s tenebrous eyes for the briefest of moments as he recalled the vampire brothers he had fought around a month ago.

One vampire had been killed, but the other had managed to slip from his grasp.

This place... this secret plane seemed to be quite important to those two, Adam mused.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the one alive followed us into the mist.

But how can that be possible? Throughout the entire journey, I scouted our surroundings and ensured no one was following us.

He couldn’t have fooled my senses.

No...

But he could have been extremely cautious and followed up from beyond the range of my senses!

Could he have destroyed the spider?

If I assume that all those who enter this secret plane arrive on this wasteland first, then that vampire could be nearby.

"Adam?"

Genevieve’s voice brought him back out of his train of thought.

"Yeah?"

"Is there something wrong?" Genevieve asked quietly, intently studying the raven-haired youth’s expression.

A moment later, Adam smiled and shook his head.

"No," he said. "I was just wondering who or what could have destroyed your spider."

He’s hiding his thoughts again, Genevieve wondered with slight exasperation.

She found it remarkable how naturally Adam could control his expressions, feigning emotions while keeping even his stray thoughts hidden. He could even change the look in his eyes.

After all, a person’s expressions were the window to their outward thoughts.

Adam raised his head, gazing at the crack in the ceiling. "We should go now. Follow the trail left behind by your spider."

"What about that... thing out there?" Genevieve couldn’t help but voice her concern.

Before Adam could reply, Valerian said with utter confidence:

"Don’t worry! My brother is super strong!"

The corner of Adam’s lips curled into a light smirk. He turned to Genevieve and shrugged.

"He’s right, you know"

The trio climbed out of the underground structure and emerged onto the surface.

Keeping to the trail the spider construct had taken, they advanced cautiously through the mist.

Genevieve stayed close behind Adam, her eyes constantly scanning the gray veil around them. Every now and then, her gaze drifted to the trail of red dotted line left behind the construct, making sure they hadn’t strayed from the path.

Valerian, meanwhile, nestled comfortably inside Adam’s tunic, with only his little head poking out. His round, topaz eyes darted from side to side, curiously taking in the bleak landscape as the three disappeared deeper into the mist.

Adam kept the Sphere of Resonance activated at all times. Much to his dismay, he found that his senses couldn’t peer through the mist. He could only see a radius of about ten feet.

However, that was enough for him to react in case of an ambush.

Show yourself, he thought grimly.

Although he had no proof that the vampire had followed them inside, he couldn’t help but wonder that it was very likely to be the case.

Or this mist could be home to other beasts that Adam was not aware of. Either way, he was prepared for what was to come.

We’ll camp in the structure that the spider found, he thought.

Then we’ll keep repeating the process and get out of this damned mist.

I hope we can get out of this...

His words trailed off, and his feet came to a gradual halt.

"What is it?" Genevieve whispered as she stopped behind Adam.

Valerian peeked out from Adam’s tunic and glanced at her over his shoulder.

He said with an exasperated sigh:

"Oh, you know. It’s Brother’s rotten luck."

"Dragonshit!" She heard Adam use that strange curse word again.

She took another step forward and looked past Adam and immediately understood.

The trail was gone.

More accurately, someone had tampered with it.

The faint tracks left by the spider construct didn’t simply fade into the mist. They ended abruptly as though someone had deliberately erased them.

The disturbed earth, the scattered pebbles, and fresh scuff marks made it obvious that someone had been there after the spider.

Adam’s eyes narrowed, and he murmured, "We’re not the only ones here."

Genevieve nodded with a grim impression, then suggested, "Shall we go back to our base? I’ll send a few more of my spiders to scout from there."

Adam agreed without hesitation. That was definitely the safer approach. He turned to her and gestured, "Let’s go."

Genevieve nodded. She turned and took a step, intending to follow the trail back to the underground building.

But she suddenly froze.

Her eyes widened slowly.

The trail behind her had vanished.

Once again, someone had tampered with it!

The marks left behind by the spider construct had been deliberately erased, leaving the three of them stranded in the endless mist.

A heavy silence settled over the group.

"Someone’s toying with us," Adam murmured, his eyes flashing with a cold light.

He hadn’t been able to sense anyone near them. He couldn’t understand how someone could have tampered with the trail despite his senses working actively.

That must mean the shady practice must have occurred beyond the range of his senses.

Someone was close.

Very close.

"Should we just take a random direction and start walking?" Valerian suggested. "We do have all day to reach the next safe spot."

"We don’t know how long the days in this secret plane are," Adam said.

Genevieve inhaled deeply, then said. "I’ll deploy my spiders now. I’ll perform reconnaissance while on the move."

She then turned to Adam and said, "Until then..."

Adam understood. He nodded. "I’ll protect you."

His words put Genevieve greatly at ease.

She plucked two more beads from her bracelet and activated them. The beads sprouted tiny legs, transforming into spider constructs that scurried off in different directions.

"You can split your attention between two at once?" Adam asked with an arched brow.

Genevieve nodded confidently. "Easy."

Just as she was about to close her eyes and link her vision to the constructs, the trio heard an eerie sound.

Flap!

They all turned toward it.

Flap! Flap!

Then another.

And another.

Within moments, the ominous sound swelled into a deafening chorus. A dark mass spread through the mist in the distance, blotting out the gray sky as it rushed toward them.

A dark, sinister blanket descended upon the land!
