Chapter 1884: Sound of Life

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The sun was nowhere to be seen behind the overcast, gloomy sky.

Yet the steady fading of daylight hinted at the arrival of evening. Before long, a faint crimson glow began to creep across the horizon.

The long, bloody claws of the moon reached out for the skies before soon covering it in a dreadful red.

Night had fallen once again, and the crimson moon had come out in all its ominous splendour.

A figure stood in the shadows of the entrance that led to the underground hall.

Crimson rays fell over him, revealing sharp features, deep tenebrous eyes, raven-black hair, and a patch of bone-white strands near his temple.

Adam stood perfectly still, his hands resting at his sides. He was ready to activate the Faceless Mask at a moment’s notice, but first he needed to confirm something.

More than fifty years had passed since he’d received this mysterious mark.

’The mark of the Underworld shall remain upon you forever,’ that powerful lich had said to him at the time.

For the longest time, Adam didn’t know what his words meant. He was unaware of what the mark did to him, whether it was beneficial or detrimental. Other than the fact it made him appear eccentric, he knew nothing about it.

But when he entered this secret plane, he finally had an idea.

One by one, the undead rose from the earth as though answering the moon’s silent call. Skeletal hands burst through the soil, clawing at the ground before dragging decayed bodies into the open.

Looking at the sheer number of creatures that had emerged before his very eyes, Adam felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end.

The weakest of them had strength equivalent to Squire Paladins, while the strongest were on par with Cavalier Paladins.

In the blink of an eye, hundreds of thousands of undead warriors had risen from the ground. Under the glow of the crimson moon, they appeared to be itching for battle.

Still, Adam did not alter his body into one of them.

Not yet.

He had to confirm his suspicions first.

In the off chance that he was wrong, he could retreat to the safety of the underground chamber. The talisman made it a sanctuary, after all.

Adam’s breathing quickened, and his heartbeat increased.

Ba-dump! Ba-dump!

The nearest undead monsters, ones especially close to the entrance of the underground hall, suddenly stirred.

Ba-dump! Ba-dump!

One by one, almost a dozen of them turned their heads toward the source of that sound.

The sound of life.

Ba-dump! Ba-dump!

Ba-dump! Ba-dump!

Adam took a slow step back, ready to retreat the moment the monsters showed any signs of hostility.

A dozen pairs of lifeless eyes locked onto him, causing his expression to stiffen.

But then...

The undead turned away, as though they had lost interest.

For a brief moment, the battlefield fell into ominous silence. Then, somewhere in the distance, a monstrous war cry split the air.

In the next heartbeat, the world erupted.

The undead surged forward in a mindless tide and charged at one another. Roars, shrieks, and guttural howls drowned out every other sound. The earth trembled beneath countless pounding feet as the two undead armies collided with overwhelming violence.

The battle had begun. Once again.

Standing frozen under the shade of the dilapidated entrance, Adam exhaled a shaky breath. The corner of his lips curled into a smile, then a grin.

I was right!

He thought to himself gleefully: So this is what the mark does.

The undead will ignore me because I bear the mark of the Underworld!

I wonder if this is limited to only the zombies and skeletal soldiers, or does it apply to all manner of undead?

He took a step forward. Then another. And another.

The battle raged all around him. The undead monsters clashed ferociously, yet none of them so much as spared him a glance. They rushed past him as though he was invisible.

Well, not entirely, though.

He still had to sidestep charging monsters and duck beneath stray swings as the chaos spilled across the battlefield. But through it all, not a single creature turned its weapons against him.

It was as if... in their lifeless eyes, he simply wasn’t their enemy.

As he made his way across the battlefield with a nervous smile on his face, he surmised the following:

The mark of the Underworld was a mysterious brand that marked him as one acknowledged by the Underworld. In other words, he was recognized as one of the Underworld’s own!

Lesser undead instinctively did not perceive him as a hostile living creature and wouldn’t deliberately attack him unless compelled by a stronger will, provoked, or caught in collateral damage.

Wading through the sea of undead was an unnerving experience. Decayed bodies brushed past him from every direction, their vacant eyes fixed on the battlefield instead of him.

Every instinct screamed at him to flee, and every passing corpse made his muscles tighten in anticipation of an attack that never came.

Adam was as tense as he was exhilarated.

The mark of the Underworld had worked beyond his expectations, but he refused to let his guard down.

Keeping his objective in mind, he used the positions of the celestial bodies overhead to maintain his bearing and continued east. Hours passed as he pressed onward through the endless battlefield.

Then, on the distant horizon, roughly a day’s journey away, he saw it.

A colossal structure stretching across the horizon.

Even from that distance, it dwarfed everything around it, rising above the blood-red landscape like an ancient monument left behind by forgotten men.

Adam’s eyes gleamed with a sharp light.

It was a wall.

A vast wall that stretched endlessly in both directions, its ends disappearing beyond the horizon. Towering over the crimson land, it stood like a barrier dividing the world itself.

The closer Adam drew, the more the battlefield began to quiet.

The endless clashes faded into the distance, and the number of undead steadily thinned. The swarming hordes gave way to stragglers until even they became few and far between.

By the time he was within sight of the wall’s immense base, the frenzy of war had become little more than a distant roar carried by the wind.

The moon was beginning to dip below the horizon, but Adam had finally found a way out.

Or rather, a way through.
