The Ink Emperor!Adam’s eyes slowly widened.
Did his ascension to the Emperor Rank give birth to the ink world?
No, that doesn’t make sense. His magic must’ve created this metaphysical plane.
He must have voluntarily created this world and made this his domain... I think?
The mysteries of the Emperor Rank are too profound for someone like me to comprehend.
He turned his attention to Isabella, then said, "How old is the Ink Emperor?"
Isabella shrugged. "We don’t bother about such things. The Ink Emperor is our god. He created us. He created our world. And we owe everything to him."
She arched a brow and asked, "Do you humans ever question your god’s age? What a silly question!"
"We don’t have a god," Adam said.
"That’s not true!" Isabella replied, crossing her arms. "Don’t you have the Human Emperor?"
The corner of Adam’s lips twitched.
Ah, that’s right.
The mortals of the Imperium do view him as an all-powerful god.
They believe he created humanity, that he watches over every human in the Imperium, and that he protects them from the horrors of the cosmos.
Even some of the Magi view him as a god.
Adam couldn’t help but sigh involuntarily.
Emperors were such hallowed beings that the masses revered them as gods.
It made one wonder... just how powerful and influential were those that stood even beyond the Emperor Rank?
Although the vast majority of the Imperium worshiped the Human Emperor as a god, he was, in truth, only a man.
He was the first Emperor born of mankind.
He was bestowed the true name Human Emperor by mana itself.
Well, to his credit, the man did elevate our species into the great faction that it is today, Adam thought.
He viewed the Human Emperor as not a god, but a Magus. Yet that did nothing to diminish his respect for him. If anything, it only made him admire the Emperor even more.
I’m getting carried away...
He looked toward Isabella and said, "You said you were born long before monsters covered this land. What does that mean?"
Isabella blinked. "You escaped my little world. You’re supposed to be smart. Why are you asking stupid questions?"
Adam bit his lower lip in frustration.
Damn it, I can’t even think straight!
Too much had happened since he’d arrived at Adventurers’ City. He was tired physically and mentally. He desperately needed a place to rest. But without properly setting up defences, he didn’t dare to close his eyes. Lest he close them forever.
For a brief moment, he even had the ridiculous idea of entering the portrait once more just to sleep.
He expanded his Sphere of Resonance, ensuring that his senses didn’t go beyond the building. He didn’t want others to notice him. Thinking about the Mana Seed-level creature on that terrace made him shudder.
For now, the only silver lining was that other monsters didn’t dare enter this building in fear of Isabella. Or, at least, that’s what he guessed was the reason why no monsters neared this place.
His senses brushed against a small basement. It was a cellar.
Without wasting another moment, he rose to his feet and headed downstairs.
"Hey, where are you going?" Isabella called out to him.
Adam hesitated briefly, then said, "I’ll be back."
With that, he headed down a flight of stairs to the cellar. The door had long since been broken, but with a little bit of magic, he sealed the entrance shut. Then, he hung the talisman by the wall.
In the very next moment, he collapsed to the ground, utterly unbothered by the stench or the cramped confines of the cellar.
He continued to circulate his mana to heal his internal injuries.
Before long, exhaustion took over him, and he drifted off to sleep.

Despite finally settling into a proper, secured shelter, Genevieve was unable to sleep.
For one, she wasn’t accustomed to sharing living space with so many strangers. Such was life in a dormitory.
More importantly, she couldn’t stop worrying about Adam and Valerian.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him disappearing into the city alone, pursued by countless monsters. He had sworn a Mana Oath to clear her and Michael’s name, then walked away.
She turned over in bed and stared at the underside of the bunk above her.
Is he still alive?
The thought refused to leave her mind.
Around her, the soft sounds of conversation filled the dormitory as one adventurer after another woke up.
Genevieve envied them. No matter how hard she had tried, sleep eluded her. The more she forced herself to rest, the more her thoughts wandered to the man who was still somewhere out there in the darkness.
Her hopes of enjoying a proper, private bath were once again dashed when she discovered that even the bathroom area was communal. At the very least, the men and women had separate shower areas.
With only a little embarrassment, she waited until the bathing area had mostly emptied before washing herself.
The few women still inside paid her little attention, each occupied with her own business. Even so, Genevieve hurried through the bath, eager to finish before anyone struck up a conversation.
By the time she stepped out, dressed in a fresh set of clothes, she let out a sigh of relief.
At least, that ordeal was over.
Soon, she found Michael, and together, they headed to the dining hall for breakfast. Unlike her, the Paladin looked refreshed after a good night’s rest.
Breakfast was an uneventful affair. Genevieve barely tasted the food as her thoughts repeatedly drifted back to the raven-haired youth.
After finishing their meal, the two made their way to one of the reception posts on the first floor. They still had to receive their confiscated artifacts. Moreover, they were also going to be assigned work.
Life inside the City Hall wasn’t free. Everyone contributed in one way or another, earning their meals through labor. Some repaired equipment, others cooked, patrolled the walls, scavenged supplies, or joined hunting parties that ventured into the city and beyond. Every pair of hands mattered.
When they reached the post, a short queue had already formed. Adventurers quietly waited their turn while the staff behind the counter sorted records and handed out assignments.
Genevieve and Michael joined the end of the line, waiting patiently for their names to be called.
But things took an unexpected turn when it was finally her turn.
"What do you mean I’m not getting all my artifacts?"
