King Louis d’Aubigny...That is not the name the gypsy said, Adam thought to himself with a deep frown on her face.
If I’m not wrong, she said...
Welcome to the land of King Jacob de Vile.
He intently looked at Isabella, trying to figure out whether she was lying. Then he asked with narrowed eyes:
"Who is King Jacob de Vile then?"
Isabella’s brows flew up in surprise. "Ah, you know of the Usurper!"
Adam’s frown deepened. "The Usurper?"
Isabella stuck her tongue out playfully.
"That’s all I’m willing to say to you, my dear. Two names - Louis the Greedy and Jacob the Usurper. If you wish to know more, bring me someone I can chat with."
Adam fell into deep thought. Isabella’s clues were enough to jog his memories. He recalled the story the old gypsy had told before they were transported to this secret plane.
There was a fierce warrior who fell in love and hung his mantle, he thought.
His king could not accept it, so he secretly killed the warrior’s wife and pinned the blame on the kingdom’s enemies.
He manipulated the warrior into slaying his foes. In the process, the king grew rich.
But the gypsies one day found that warrior on the brink of death. They nursed him back to health and told him the truth about his wife’s murder.
Enraged, the warrior killed the king and eradicated his entire bloodline.
Then he crowned himself the new king.
King Jacob de Vile... the Usurper.
And the one he killed was King Louis d’Aubigny... the Greedy.
The pieces of the puzzle slowly fell into place. But there was one thing he still couldn’t understand.
So he turned to Isabella and asked, "Why does the Usurper want outsiders into this secret plane? I mean... his kingdom. And the gypsies said something very strange. They hoped we could fulfill the King’s deepest desire. What does that even mean?"
Sranger still was the existence of the vampire named Sandra. But that wasn’t something he intended to reveal to Isabella.
Sandra’s warning still echoed in his mind:
The King’s eyes and ears are everywhere within his kingdom.
Isabella raised her hands and shrugged dramatically. "Who knows?"
Adam’s expression darkened. He knew she wasn’t going to reveal any more than she already had. His shoulders slumped slightly and he sighed.
At least, now I know where to look for answers. But that’s only if she isn’t lying...
His eyes suddenly narrowed.
Yes. I can’t take her words at face value.
I don’t trust her!
I must find other sources of information.
"Very well, then." He nodded. "I’ll see you soon."
"Don’t forget to bring a guest over!" Isabella said excitedly.
With that said, the muscles in his body squirmed, his bones cracked and shifted, his flesh turned pale and corpse-like.
Under Isabella’s dumbfounded gaze, Adam transformed into a zombie.
The woman in black shrieked through the portrait. "What are you?!"
Adam turned toward her and grinned, flashing his yellowed teeth and rotten gums.
Then he leaped through the window and disappeared.
***
Adam realized, much to his dismay, that altering his body into that of an undead didn’t help him all that much.
All the transformation guaranteed was that he wasn’t attacked by other undead creatures such as ghouls and zombies.
He was attacked by other kinds of monsters all the same.
Immediately after exiting Isabella’s house, he was besieged by a pack of wolves who had taken it upon themselves to eradicate all manner of undead in the city.
It was relatively easy to fool those beasts and escape. But very soon, he was attacked by a swarm of bloodthirsty bats.
The swarm consisted of hundreds of these bats. All of them had strength equivalent to an Apprentice or a Squire. But together, as a group, they posed a far greater threat.
So Adam didn’t even bother fighting them. He ran for his life.
Before the sun had even set, he was attacked and chased by every manner of monster imaginable, including but not limited to flesh golems, wailing banshees, headless horsemen, giant carrion crows, corpse hounds, pale wraiths, gargoyles, diseased rats, corpse spiders, etc.
If it weren’t for him being on the verge of death every fifteen minutes, Adam would have called it a very eye-opening, wonderful experience where he got to witness so many different kinds of monsters in one place.
He was beginning to feel that the dark woods beyond the city walls would provide him more safety than staying in the city.
However, traveling beyond the city walls proved equally difficult.
He couldn’t walk past the city gates because of the overwhelming number of monsters gathered there. Scaling the walls was out of the question. It would make him an easy target for the flying monsters constantly patrolling the skies.
Worse still, he had no idea what monsters lurked atop the walls themselves.
Worst of all, he couldn’t find the adventurers’ safehouse that led to the underground tunnel. He didn’t know what it looked like. At the time, he hadn’t paid much attention to it, never imagining he would be barred from entering the City Hall and forced to survive in the city on his own.
Just when he thought he wouldn’t be able to find a safe place to spend the night, fortune finally smiled upon him.
He found an old building crowned by a cracked dome. Soundlessly, he landed atop it and spread his senses through the interior.
It appeared to be a place of worship. Rows of broken pews stretched across the main hall, while a raised dais stood at the far end. Statues of angels lined the walls, many chipped, weathered, or missing pieces altogether.
More importantly, he sensed no monsters within.
No movement. No hostility. No danger.
As the crimson moon rose above the distant horizon, Adam didn’t hesitate to slip through the cracked dome. He landed silently on the floor between the two rows of wooden pews.
An ominous red light filtered through the broken dome, bathing the temple in a dim crimson glow.
Adam slowly stood straight and surveyed his surroundings, every muscle tense and ready to fight. The temple doors had been barred from within, and the windows were nailed with wooden planks. If not for the gaping fissure in the dome, he would have hung a talisman here and called this place home.
After carefully scanning the interior and confirming there was no immediate danger, he finally let out a quiet sigh of relief.
But in hindsight, he should have known it was too good to be true.
The absence of monsters in and around the temple didn’t necessarily mean it was safe.
It could just as easily mean they were too afraid to come near it.
And unbeknownst to Adam, one of the statues lining the wall had cast its gaze toward him...
