Adam quickly realized that if the conversation drifted anywhere near the Human Emperor or mankind, Luca seemed like he would happily ramble on for hours. He had already realized that the Lone Wolf was a fanatical worshipper of the Human Emperor.
The Paladin also seemed to be remarkably well-versed in history — particularly, the history of mankind.
So, as the fire continued to crackle between them, their conversation stretched late into the night. Adam found history genuinely fascinating, and he saw this as a good opportunity to learn more.
Before Luca began, however, he couldn’t help but cast a strange glance at Adam.
"What kind of human doesn’t know their own history?" he asked.
Adam shrugged. "I’m not from around here. I’m from the Outer Universe. So the only history I’m privy to is the history of my homeworld."
That was a lie.
Through the memories he had absorbed, Adam knew bits and pieces of the general history surrounding mankind. However, they were very fragmented and not something he wanted to rely upon if he could help it. He would much rather get a solid grasp of history through books or from someone who was well-versed in it.
Luca’s brows rose in surprise. "You’re from the Outerverse?"
Suddenly, he thought of something and his eyes narrowed.
"Constantine," he began in a low voice. "How old are you?"
"A hundred and thirty. A little over that," Adam replied truthfully. "Why?"
A gleam flickered in the Lone Wolf’s grey eyes. In that instant, the way he regarded Adam changed ever so slightly.
From the faint mana fluctuations of Adam’s mana, Luca could tell he was on the verge of advancing to the next rank.
Learning that Adam was so young and from the Outer Universe raised Luca’s opinion of him even further.
After all, Luca himself was only a few years younger than Adam, and stood on the threshold of the Templar Rank.
But Luca had exceptional training, guidance from renowned experts, and nigh-limitless resources growing up. For Adam to reach a similar standing despite coming from the Outer Universe spoke volumes about not only his talent but also hard work and determination.
So what if one had talent?
The universe was vast, and there were countless people with monstrous talents. But without the hard work to back it up, talent amounted to nothing.
"So how much do you know about our history?" he asked.
Although Adam’s talent surprised him, it only earned a little more of Luca’s respect. His attitude remained unchanged. He had met many gifted young Magi and Paladins throughout his life, people just as talented as himself and Adam. Adam’s potential was impressive, but it was hardly unprecedented.
"I know a little bit about the First Epoch," Adam said as he took another swig of ale.
"It began when the glaciers melted and revealed Centerra," he continued. "The First Races emerged. Vast empires rose and fell. Endless genocidal wars plagued the land. By the end of that epoch, three of the First Races faded from history, while humanity endured."
"Yes." Luca nodded, his grey eyes blazing with passion. "Humanity always endures! Ours is a glorious history spanning more than a hundred thousand years!"
He fell silent for a long moment, as though debating whether to say the next words.
At last, he said, "I don’t know how much of this is true, but I’ve read a few ancient records claiming that humanity predates even the Great Winter."
Adam frowned. "The Great Winter?"
"The age when Myrrandor was buried beneath ice," Luca explained. "It is also called the Zero Epoch. Almost no records from that era have survived, so most scholars dismiss it as little more than legend."
The Zero Epoch, Adam thought, intrigued.
Now that’s something I didn’t know.
"What else do you know about the Zero Epoch?" he asked.
"Nothing much, really." Luca shook his head, shrugging slightly.
"That’s the problem. Almost nothing survived from that era. Some scholars even argue the Zero Epoch never existed. Others claimed someone deliberately erased it from history. Whatever the truth is... the world before the Great Winter remains one of Myrrandor’s greatest mysteries."
Adam nodded. Then he couldn’t help but ask, feeling slightly skeptical, "How were you able to learn about it, though?"
This was knowledge he hadn’t even heard any mentions of in his vast library of memories.
Luca answered casually, "I know of someone who claims their origins stretch back even before the First Epoch. More accurately, it’s an organization."
He paused for a moment, his eyes distant.
"An organization made entirely of women, if you can believe it."
"Entirely of women?" Adam’s widened slightly.
"Yeah." Luca nodded. "They’re a very scary bunch. And they wield immense power and influence."
Adam fell silent. He was hoping the Lone Wolf would shed more light on this ancient organization, but the man said nothing. So he wisely didn’t press for more.
He studied Luca poking the fire with a stick, and couldn’t help but wonder:
How does he know all of these things? What is his background?
"You want to tell me about the Human Emperor?" Adam steered the conversation.
Luca’s eyes lit up at the mention, but he quickly corrected him.
"For us, it’s the God Emperor, Constantine."
The corner of Adam’s lips twitched.
"Yes... of course."
"The God Emperor’s origins are shrouded in mysteries," Luca began, his voice filled with reverence.
"Some say He was born in the First Epoch. Others say He survived the Great Winter. There are those who even claim He is an immortal being. Most scholars agree only that His story began at the beginning of the First Epoch, also known as the Dawn Age.
"This epoch lasted about ten thousand years. As you may already know, mankind was weak then. We suffered endlessly. But we adapted. We endured.
"Things were much the same during the Second Epoch, when dragons and giants ruled the world. The titans were always at each other’s throats, and humanity survived in the cracks between them.
"It was sometime in the first half of that epoch that He ascended to the Emperor Rank. He was the first Emperor Magus of our race, and mana itself bestowed upon him the true name... the Human Emperor."
Luca’s voice grew more reverent with every word.
"Yet despite wielding such unimaginable power, the God Emperor did not act. He was patient. He remained in the shadows, gathering followers, building His strength. That continued until the Third Epoch, when the world became a battlefield for the elven kingdoms.
"And when the elf kings had exhausted themselves, when millennia of war had broken their armies and bled their empires dry, that was when the God Emperor made His move!"
Luca’s fists clenched, and his eyes blazed with passion.
"But He did not march alone. At his side stood His First Sons, twelve legendary warriors who had also ascended to the Emperor Rank by then. Together, they began the Holy Crusade!
"And thus finally began the Fourth Epoch...
"The Age of Man."
There were mere words.
Yet they stirred something deep within Adam.
As he stared at the dancing flames, he found himself imagining a lone figure striding through an age of cosmic monsters and endless wars, carving out a place for humanity with sheer will.
Almost unconsciously, he murmured, his tone laced with admiration:
"God Emperor..."
Luca turned to him and smiled in approval.
He thumped a fist against his chest and proudly proclaimed:
"Through Him, We Prevail."
