"Forgive... me... my lord. For... I... have... sinned."The hoarse voice of the high priest echoed inside the sun temple.
"Forgive... me... I... have... sinned."
The same words kept repeating over and over again, as it had for the last week. Ever since Adam had managed to escape from the werewolf’s grasp, it had sought penance before the statue of the sun god.
Slash! Slash!
The sound of tearing echoed relentlessly in the temple, accompanied by the same words.
"Forgive... me... my savior. For... I... have... sinned."
The crimson light slipped through the gaping crack in the dome, bathing the temple in gentle yet frightening hues.
The stone angels stood atop pillars, their wings folded and their hands clasped together in a silent prayer. Their expressions were full of melancholy.
"Forgive... me... I... have... sinned."
Slash! Slash!
The high priest knelt before the statue, a barbed whip clenched in one hand. Again and again, it lashed its own back.
Each strike tore through its flesh with a sickening crack. Long, bloody injuries crisscrossed its back, soaking its once-white fur until it had turned the same deep crimson as the moon hanging overhead.
"Oh... forgive... me!"
The high priest let out a mournful wail, yet the whip in its hand did not pause for even a second.
It was a test from the sun god.
Adam had truly been the perfect sacrifice. If only the werewolf could have sacrificed him, the warmth of the sun would have finally returned to this accursed land.
It was the greatest test of its life.
The sacrifice had managed to slip through its grasp. With nothing to appease the sun god, it sought to seek penance instead, desperately hoping for forgiveness.
Slash! Slash!
The whip continued to lash out. By now, the bones had become faintly visible under the torn flesh. Yet the high priest did not stop.
Until...
"What’s the point of all of that?"
An unfamiliar, yet strangely familiar voice echoed in the temple.
The Antlered High Priest paused, its glassy eyes narrowing. At the same time, the sorrowful expressions on the stone faces of the angels had twisted into something dark and menacing.
The werewolf slowly rose to its feet, the barbed whip in its hand dripping with blood. It turned around, its gaze landing on the goat monster who stood amid the wreckage.
"Carou... what... are... you... doing... here?"
The high priest let out a threatening growl. It was evident that it did not appreciate the goat monster — Carou’s — unwelcome arrival.
The carmine monster smiled faintly, "I only wish to talk, my friend. I’ll be gone—"
Its words got caught in its throat when the werewolf suddenly made a move. In the blink of an eye, the high priest had arrived before Carou, swinging the barbed whip at it.
Bam!
The whip slammed into the ground, carving a gaping wound across the ruined earth.
A sigh echoed in the temple.
Carou had appeared in front of the sun god’s statue, completely evading the high priest’s surprise attack.
"You’re always like this," it said. "I just want to talk."
"I... don’t!" The werewolf turned around and growled menacingly.
"I said I just want to talk." Carou’s expression turned grim. "It’s about the human. The one carrying the Brand."
The muscles on the high priest’s body bulged. Its glassy eyes turned bloodshot, and its claws elongated.
"Where... is... he?!" the werewolf roared.
Carou blinked.
It was getting truly annoyed playing this stupid game of cat and mouse.
"How in the nine hells should I know where he is?!" It blurted out. "I thought the human was with you—"
Its words got interrupted again when the werewolf turned into a white blur and arrived before Carou.
The goat monster immediately darted behind the statue of the sun god.
The Antlered High Priest was forced to halt its attack, its claw stopping mere inches away from striking the image of its lord and savior.
For the first time, its glassy eyes flickered with horror.
"Oh... oh no! My... lord... forgive me... I didn’t... mean... to!"
Carou sneered. "Instead of worshipping our King, you bow your head to—"
"SILENCE!" the werewolf roared.
It tried to catch up to the sneaky goat monster, but Carou was faster. It always managed to keep the sun god’s statue in between them.
"Answer my question!" Carou had had enough. "Where is the human?!"
"I... don’t... know!"
The Antlered High Priest kept slashing with its claws, desperately trying to get a hold of Carou. But each time, the goat monster slipped effortlessly out of its reach.
The stone angels wisely stayed out of the fight.
They knew that if they entered the fray, they would die, not only at Carou’s hands, but also at those of the High Priest.
"If I find out that you’re hiding the human—"
The high priest sharply interrupted the goat monster, "I... don’t... have... him! Come... here! You... will... do... as... sacrifice! Stop... stop moving!"
Carou’s eyes narrowed as he continued to effortlessly evade the werewolf’s attacks.
If the human isn’t here, then where is he?
He couldn’t help but wonder in dismay.
Having cleared all doubts, Carou evaded the werewolf’s attacks one final time. In a blur, it slipped past the high priest and escaped through the gap in the dome, leaving behind its parting words.
"It was nice catching up with you, old friend."
The only reply it got was a wrathful roar that echoed far and wide.

Meanwhile, in a nearby building, Leah and her teammates were visibly shaken.
They had all heard the sound of battle originating from the sun temple. And when they heard the ominous howl of the wolf, they couldn’t help but shudder.
"It’s happening!" Dell blurted out. "Oh, goodness! It’s happening again!"
"Shut up! Just shut up!" the other elf hissed. Though he, too, couldn’t stop his legs from trembling.
Michael had already turned toward the door, his hand on the hilt of his sword despite the fear and panic consuming him.
Genevieve and Leah had arrived by the window. They lifted the curtain ever so slightly and peeked outside.
The crimson moon shone ominously.
In the distance, the dome of the sun temple still stood proud despite the massive fissure running through it.
The sound of battle had come from there.
Genevieve gasped as a shadowy figure suddenly shot through the gap in the dome. It was there one moment, then gone the next, swallowed by the darkness of the night.
She thought she had imagined it, so she turned to Leah and couldn’t help but ask, "Did you... see that?"
"Yes." Leah swallowed hard before slowly nodding. "Yes, I did."
Strange things were happening in Adventurers’ City.
