Chapter 1962: Grave Danger Awaits

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

After spending the night at the cave recuperating, Adam and Luca made haste the following day.

The [Blood Compass] continued as long as two conditions were met: the target remained alive, and the target did not stray far beyond the compass’s effective range.

Adam feared that while he and Luca rested for the night, the goat monster, Carou, would have traveled a great distance, effectively making the [Blood Compass] useless.

Fortunately, that did not happen.

’I can only assume that the monster rested at night to deal with its injuries,’ Luca said through the communication artifact as the pair leapt from one branch to another, following the compass.

Adam nodded solemnly, not quite satisfied with how things were going.

Luca noticed his grave expression and couldn’t help but say, ’This is good news, Constantine. Cheer up a little.’

Adam sighed. He turned to the towering hulk of a man and said with a bitter smile, ’Any time things start to go my way, I get increasingly suspicious.’

The corner of Luca’s lips twitched. ’What kind of logic is that?’

Adam waved a hand. ’You won’t get it,’ he said. ’My luck is... a little special.’

’Didn’t you claim to be a very lucky guy?’ Luca scoffed. ’So lucky, in fact, that you bagged countless inheritances back in your home world?’

Adam resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

Under the guidance of the [Blood Compass], the pair rapidly followed behind Carou. Day gave way to night, and night, in turn, yielded to day.

Just like that, a week passed.

As the days passed, the pair fought monsters during the day and recuperated at night.

The monsters they encountered were troublesome, but manageable. None of them were enough to stop the pair for long.

The real problem was time.

With each passing day, Carou widened the gap between them. It appeared that the monster had pretty much recovered from his injuries — which weren’t that grave, to begin with.

The distance separating hunter and prey continued to grow.

Despite following the trail without pause, Adam and Luca found themselves falling further and further behind.

As the sands of time continued to fall, the injuries Adam had suffered at the werewolf’s hands began to flare up with increasing severity.

Instead of recovering, his condition steadily worsened.

His stamina dwindled. His strength faded. Even simple battles became more taxing with each passing day. By the time another week had passed in pursuit, Adam was in far worse condition than when the chase had begun.

Then came the final blow.

The [Blood Compass] had suddenly stopped responding.

The wooden needle spun aimlessly before falling still.

Carou had gone far beyond its range.

Adam sighed weakly. He crushed the rock in his hand and threw the pieces away. "Well, there goes the compass," he murmured.

"No problem," Luca said. "We always knew this was a possibility. At least, we can confirm the monster didn’t stop anywhere else on its way toward the mountain."

The pair stood on rocky slopes dusted with snow.

Behind them, the forest had thinned into scattered clusters of trees. Ahead loomed the towering Lamiyan Mountains, their jagged peaks disappearing behind the gloomy clouds.

A broad mountain path stretched before them, winding its way through the mountains. It was the same road that connected to the dirt path cutting across the secret plane, the one that began at the gates flanked by giant statues.

A frigid wind swept across the slopes, carrying with it the bitter chill of the highlands. Adam couldn’t help but pull the cloak tighter around his frame. His figure trembled in the weather.

It was cold.

There were still a few hours left till sunset. They had marked a safe hideout — yet another cave — on their way here. They would have to turn around and travel for another hour before resting. Entering the mountain pass seemed unwise.

Luca stared at the pass that disappeared into the darkness, toward the depth of the mountain range.

Uncharted territory.

This was the farthest he had ever been in all the time he had spent in this wretched place.

He turned to look at his companion and noticed how frail and weak he looked. Luca sighed. "Alright, Constantine. Let’s get some rest. We planned to camp here for two weeks for you to recover, anyway. The lack of a [Blood Compass] changes nothing."

Adam let out a hoarse chuckle. He looked at Luca with an amused smile. "You trying to make me feel better?"

Luca scoffed. "I’m saying I need you at your strongest."

He turned back around and looked into the depths of the Lamian Mountains. His expression turned grim.

"Grave danger awaits us on the other side of the mountains, Constantine. I can feel it."

Adam’s expression also grew solemn. "They say vampires rule this secret plane, and that they live on the other side of the mountains."

"Who’s they?" Luca turned back toward him and asked with a raised brow. "The people from the City Hall?"

"Aye." Adam nodded.

Luca had a thoughtful look on his face. He turned around and faced the mountains.

"I’ve never killed a vampire before," he murmured.

Adam found the man a little amusing.

He recalled the first time he had faced a vampire. It was back in his homeworld of Tron.

That was during my first mission from the Clover Academy, he thought with a reminiscent look in his eyes.

With Fatty and Lisa.

I wonder if Lisa’s managing fine as the Headmistress of my academy.

And Fatty...

Is he here on Myrrandor?

Or on some distant world, fighting on behalf of the Imperium?

Adam missed his friends.

But his eyes narrowed very quickly when he picked up on several presences rapidly closing in on them.

"Followers!" he warned, drawing Luca’s attention as he swiftly turned around.

"How many?" Luca quickly got ready to battle.

Adam focused his senses on the approaching enemy, his brows furrowing.

"Four," he said. "Three monsters and..."

His eyes slowly widened.

"What’s the matter?" Luca pressed.

The fourth presence belonged to someone Adam recognized. He couldn’t forget her aura even if he wanted to.

"What is she doing here?" he muttered in shock.

Three figures burst through the tree line on the other side. They were ghouls. And one of them had a rope-bound woman slung on its shoulder.

The instant Adam saw her state, his lips curled into a dangerous smile.
