Luca sat on a low boulder, skinning the hide of a boar monster.
Having something to do like this was unthinkable for someone like him. But a lot could happen in the span of one and a half years.
He had never thought he’d find himself in this accursed secret plane with no way out.
But here he was.
As he cleaned the corpse’s entrails and cut away the edible meat, he glanced into the distance, where he saw Adam and Genevieve talking to one another. Beside them, Valerian ran around joyfully, trying to catch a butterfly.
A smile found its way onto Luca’s face. He quite liked being around Valerian, more so than around Adam. He found the little fellow very adorable.
As for Adam...
Luca’s smile gradually faded as his gaze shifted to the raven-haired youth, who seemed to be teaching something to Genevieve.
To him, Adam Constantine was a man full of mysteries. That fact did little to ease his heart. If anything, he became more and more suspicious of the man as time went by.
No matter how Luca saw it, Adam’s background must be truly terrifying. How else could his deep knowledge of so many different schools of magic be explained?
In Luca’s mind, someone truly powerful and wise must have taught him all those disciplines. Otherwise it would have been impossible for Adam to understand them on his own. That too, all by the age of a hundred and thirty.
And then there was the matter of Adam bypassing Myrrandor’s defences and arriving directly on this planet. That was what made Luca most suspicious.
Regardless of one’s social standing or strength, everyone was required to undergo proper security screening before setting foot on the homeworld of the God-Emperor. There were no exceptions.
Yet Adam had somehow bypassed all of it.
That was the greatest mystery of all.
How had he managed to get past Myrrandor’s defenses without anyone noticing?
The more Luca thought about it, the more convinced he became that there was far more to Adam than met the eye.
Either that, or he was lying.
Lying about him being from the Greater Universe. Lying about bypassing Carina and landing directly on Myrrandor.
But why lie about something like that?
That’s what made Luca even more confused. No matter what angle he tried to see the whole situation from, he just could not understand this man named Constantine.
Could he be from one of those houses?
Luca couldn’t help but wonder.
Dark hair, dark eyes... which house has those characteristics?
His gaze then shifted to Genevieve. Her characteristics were even more distinctive — auburn hair and cerulean eyes.
Hair like autumn; eyes like summer.
Luca narrowed his eyes thoughtfully.
Just as he was observing his new companions’ traits, he suddenly noticed Adam stiffen and snap toward a particular direction. A heartbeat later, Valerian transformed into a flash of gray light and disappeared.
Luca’s felt like his nerves were suddenly stretched like a bowstring. And just as he’d expected, in the next instant, Adam’s voice through the communication artifact echoed in his ear.
’Luca! We’ve got incoming!’
"Damn it!" Luca bolted in Adam’s direction without hesitation, his hands still slick with the blood of the monster.
He had only taken a few steps when he suddenly noticed something rapidly approaching him from the corner of his eye.
Luca’s eyes slowly widened, and he instinctively raised the dagger to block.
Shatter!
The dagger had been an ordinary weapon, meant to skin monsters and cut meat. It could never hold its own against vicious claws that were as sharp as Grade 1 artifacts. Not to mention, Luca didn’t have enough time to circulate his mana and coat the dagger with it.
The dagger might have shattered, but that gave Luca the buffer period to quickly retreat and reassess the situation.
Using the force of the attack, he pushed his body away from the attacker. In the very next moment, a curved blade of pulsating darkness rapidly approached him.
[Black Crescent Blade]
The spell arrived before Luca in the blink of an eye. His senses worked on overdrive, and he allowed his instincts to guide the movement of his body. All the training he had gone through, along with the battles that he had survived, sharpened his instincts.
The Paladin twisted his body at an unnatural angle, narrowly evading the spell meant to decapitate him. His feet had only touched the ground when two more [Black Crescent Blades] had reached him.
Luca dodged the first one, but not without taking a light injury to his shoulder. The same held true for the last spell. He had dodged it while taking only minimal damage.
The attacker had angled the [Black Crescent Blades] accurately and with vicious intentions. The first two weren’t meant to kill him; they were meant to guide him toward the spot where the final spell could take his life.
And if the last of the [Black Crescent Blades] had failed to eliminate him...
That’s where the attacker himself stepped in.
Boom!
The vampire launched his pale fist straight at Luca’s chest. It swirled with ominous dark energy. If it connected, the damage dealt would be nothing to scoff at.
His attack connected, but not quite in the way he had hoped.
The vampire frowned ever so slightly as he noticed the steam rising from his fist. He raised his head, saw the two lines of dirt left by the dragging of feet, and finally settled his gaze on Luca, who stood a dozen meters away, both hands raised before his sternum, and steam rising from his palms.
The Lone Wolf had blocked the vampire’s final attack as well.
"Huh." The vampire let out a light scoff.
He would be lying if he claimed he wasn’t surprised. All his life, he had assumed humans to be weak and pathetic little creatures. His own strength was also nothing to look down upon as well. But he just hadn’t expected a human to counter all of his moves.
"You’re odd," he said, glancing at Luca like he were looking at an intriguing creature that had piqued his interest.
Luca lowered his hands and stood straight. His gaze remained locked on the vampire before him as he spread his senses outward.
Two more undead creatures fought Adam and Genevieve in the distance.
All three of them had been completely separated from one another.
Luca’s eyes narrowed. "So you’re a vampire."
His opponent blinked in mild surprise. "You’re not afraid?"
All the humans that he’d met were always so afraid of him and his kind. Even the handful of adventurers he had seen were no different.
But this man... not only was he not afraid, but it even looked like he wanted to have a go at him!
"Why should I be afraid..." Luca replied, raising his chin proudly.
His following words evoked a surge of anger and hatred from the vampire.
"...of lesser creatures?"
