Chapter 1986: Blasphemy

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The High Priest blinked in confusion.

In a matter of a split second, several thoughts echoed inside its mind.

How did this human suddenly appear inside the temple?

Why hadn’t the stone angels sensed him?

Why had it not sensed his arrival?

The answer to that...

It did not matter.

"BLASPHEMY!!"

The antlered werewolf shot forward like a bolt of lightning, its claws clamping around Adam’s neck like a pincer.

Before Adam could even react, the enormous beast ripped him from atop the statue, forcing him down from his perch before slamming him against the wall behind it.

Boom!

The impact shook the entire temple. Stone cracked beneath Adam’s back as the werewolf pinned him against the wall, its claws digging into his neck with terrifying strength.

"How... dare... you?!"

The werewolf growled in fury.

Meanwhile, Adam’s eyes had widened in shock. A trace of fear flashed in those deep tenebrous pools. The wind got knocked out of his back in that instant, and he struggled to breathe.

The High Priest had been too quick to move.

It raised its other fist and brought it down with terrifying force. Adam’s head was smashed against the stone wall. The impact sent cracks spiderwebbing across the stone. Before Adam could even recover, the werewolf struck again. And again.

Each blow was powerful enough to shatter bone. Adam’s vision blurred as blood streamed down his face, his consciousness wavering dangerously with every impact. His body hung helplessly in the werewolf’s grasp as the monstrous creature continued hammering his skull into the wall.

Adam’s head rang with a deafening roar. For a brief moment, everything went dark. He was only a heartbeat away from death.

The High Priest raised its blood-stained fist again to deliver the final blow.

But then it stopped.

The werewolf’s lips curled into a ferocious grin as it leaned forward and whispered with dark satisfaction:

"You... escaped... once. You... should have... remained... hidden. But now... that you... are here... I will... make... good use... of... you!"

Adam’s limp body plopped to the ground.

The werewolf stared down at him for a moment before reaching down and grabbing him by the ankle. Without the slightest regard for his condition, it began dragging him across the stone floor.

"Praise... the... sun! I am... grateful... to him... for delivering... you... to... me... again!"

Adam’s head struck the ground every few steps, leaving a faint trail of blood in his wake. The High Priest dragged him toward the door on the left and kicked it open.

Beyond it was a narrow stone staircase descending into darkness.

"I shall... drain... every... last bit... of... blood... from you," the monster snarled as it hauled Adam down the stairs.

His body bumped and scraped against the steps all the way down. The deeper they went, the colder the air became.

At last, they reached the bottom.

"I... will... sacrifice... you... human!"

The werewolf pushed the heavy metallic door open and dragged Adam inside. The dungeon was not merely a prison. It was the torture chamber. The very same place where Adam had been brutally tortured by the werewolf less than a year ago.

The moment he was dragged inside, the familiar surroundings came into view. The stone walls were stained with old blood, while various instruments of torture hung neatly along the walls.

Chains, hooks, blades, and other cruel implements remained exactly where they had been left.

The High Priest hauled the near-unconscious Adam toward the wall and raised his limp body upright. It then seized his wrists and fastened them into a pair of iron shackles embedded in the stone.

Clank!

The heavy chains tightened around Adam’s wrists, leaving his arms stretched above him. His head remained lowered, his long hair falling over his bloodied face. He showed no reaction.

Above ground, the stone angels had begun to sing in joy. The eerie music of the cursed choir echoed in the surroundings.

"I... have... learned... from my... past... mistakes."

The High Priest stepped back and stared at Adam with its glassy crimson eyes.

"There... is no... point in... prolonged... torture," it said in realization. "I... will... kill... you... right... now!"

Then it turned toward the nearby table. It looked over the tools slowly before its gaze landed on an iron stake, which was engraved with mysterious runes.

"This... will... do!"

The High Priest retrieved the stake, its red eyes brimming with excitement. It hastily walked toward the unconscious Adam, preparing to put the stake through his heart.

There was no need for torture as it had claimed. It knew for certain that Adam’s blood sacrifice would be enough. No. More than enough. And when it offered the blood to its god come morning, the sun would rise again.

It did not waste any more time. The High Priest knew that Adam would eventually regenerate from almost any form of torture. There was no point in prolonging the process.

It would be better to kill him outright.

The antlered werewolf tightened its grip around the stake. Then, with brutal decisiveness, it thrust the sharpened weapon directly into Adam’s heart.

SPLAT!!!

The High Priest’s grin froze.

A sharp, agonizing pain suddenly erupted from deep within its body.

It originated from its own heart.

Its crimson eyes widened in confusion.

What...?

Before it could comprehend what was happening, a pair of tenebrous eyes suddenly filled its vision. Within those dark eyes was a strange geometrical pattern, a white flower blooming within each pupil.

The werewolf’s mind went blank.

The next instant, its surroundings changed.

It was no longer standing before Adam. Instead, its massive body was pinned against the stone wall. Heavy metal shackles were tightly fastened around its wrists, leaving its arms stretched above it.

An iron stake protruded from its chest, driven straight through its heart!

The werewolf’s eyes widened in disbelief. It instinctively looked down. The stake was real. The pain was real. And the blood pouring from its chest was very real.

"H-How?" it managed to speak as blood flowed from the corner of its mouth.

For the first time in countless years, the High Priest felt something it had almost forgotten.

Horror.

It raised its trembling head and saw a figure standing before it.

"You’re still alive," Adam said with a carefree smile. "Well, isn’t this wonderful."

His hands blurred, and several iron spikes shot forward, penetrating deep into the werewolf’s arms, shoulders, and legs. Before a scream could escape the beast’s maw, Adam’s hand shot forward and—

Crack!

He broke the werewolf’s jaw. Then his other hand blurred and...

Thud!

The beast’s severed tongue fell to the ground.

With the same easygoing smile on his face, Adam stroked his chin, seemingly deep in thought.

"Hmm, what was it that you said at the time? Ah, yes."

The High Priest’s figure shuddered violently when it heard Adam’s next words.

"The greater the suffering, the better the offering."
