Chapter 1998: About Love

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Jacob’s smile remained gentle.

For a few moments, he simply stood beyond the iron bars, his crimson eyes watching Genevieve in silence.

"You’re just like her, you know." He smiled. "Headstrong and beautiful."

Genevieve simply glared at him.

"Do you know why I do this?" Jacob spoke slowly.

Genevieve said nothing. She would say nothing to this foul creature. Her eyes remained fixed upon him, filled with nothing but hatred.

Jacob did not mind. His smile remained tender and gentle.

"I do it for love, my dear."

His voice was so calm, like a lullaby. As though they were discussing something beautiful.

"I simply wish to reunite with her," he added.

For the first time, something changed in his expression. The smile remained, but behind it... there was something else. Something ancient and broken.

His hand subconsciously reached toward the ruby pendant, and he brushed his fingers against the gem gently.

"She was taken away from me, you see," Jacob continued in a soft voice. "Killed because of the greed of others."

His crimson gaze slowly drifted toward the darkness beyond the corridor. His eyes were distant, heartbroken.

"The man I believed to be my closest friend betrayed me for his own ambition," he said with a slightly bitter smile. "We were brothers. Not by blood. But by choice. And yet, he..."

His fingers gently traced across the ruby gem, inside which a soft orb of light flickered gently.

"He killed her."

A sad and depressing aura enveloped Jacob as he fell silent for a long time. Then, he added, his voice barely a whisper:

"And the little life growing inside of her."

Genevieve’s eyes trembled slightly. Except for that, her expression remained unchanged, and she chose silence as her response.

But Jacob did not seem to care whether she listened. He was no longer speaking to her, really. It felt as though he was speaking to the darkness itself.

"For what?" he murmured.

His lips slowly curled upward. "Power?"

A quiet chuckle escaped his lips involuntarily.

"Ridiculous."

The sound echoed through the dungeon. For a moment, Jacob lowered his head. His hair cast a shadow over his face.

"I gave him everything."

His voice had become quieter.

"My loyalty. My sword. My victories."

He smiled again. But this time it didn’t reach his eyes.

"And he repaid me by taking everything that mattered."

The darkness inside the dungeon suddenly stirred. It seemed to have come alive, growing darker and more ominous. A sudden chill swept through the air, making Genevieve involuntarily shudder.

For a brief instant, she thought she saw something beneath Jacob’s gentle expression. A flash of something monstrous. But that atmosphere disappeared just as quickly as it had arrived.

"But that is all in the past now," Jacob murmured.

His crimson eyes settled upon her again.

"I have spent a very long time trying to correct that mistake," he said as his gaze lingered on Genevieve. "And now..."

The Vampire King smiled.

"...I am so very close."

His smile softened and he continued, "In half a year, my plans will finally come to fruition."

His crimson eyes glimmered in the darkness. "On the day of the solar eclipse."

The words were spoken almost casually. As though he were merely discussing the changing of the seasons.

"It was not an easy task, I must admit. One hundred and eight maidens... each of them meeting the necessary criteria."

He chuckled. "But a little patience goes a long way."

Jacob looked her in the eye, his expression becoming strangely tender.

"Everything is almost ready now," he said, his eyes softening. "Once the ritual is complete... you and I will be together again."

For a moment, the only sound in the dungeon was the slow dripping of water. Jacob’s smile never faded.

"Just a little more."

Genevieve remained silent, and Jacob seemed almost pleased by her refusal to respond.

"Rest well, my dear."

The shadows around him slowly began to writhe.

"We still have much to discuss."

And then, his voice softened into a whisper.

"So much about love."

Just like that, he was gone, leaving Genevieve alone in the dark dungeon.

Long after the Vampire King was gone, she slowly released a shaky breath. A lot of what he had said couldn’t register properly in her mind due to the lingering effects of the hypnotic spell.

She did, however, hear a few things.

Hundred and eight maidens...

Solar eclipse...

Half... a year...

She kept repeating those words in her mind, desperately hoping she wouldn’t forget them. Soon, her eyelids started feeling heavy as slumber threatened to take over.

As she gently rested her head against the cold stone walls, she slowly closed her eyes.

A drop of tear trickled down the side of her face as sleep finally claimed her.

Adam...

Sandra sat alone atop the sloped roof of one of the castle’s towering spires.

Far below her, the ancient fortress stretched across the desolate hill like the corpse of some forgotten beast. Jagged rooftops and blackened towers rose beneath the crimson sky, while cold wind howled between the spires, carrying with it the distant cries of creatures wandering through the darkness.

Above, the blood-red moon hung silently over the castle. Sandra gazed at it with distant eyes. There was a strange yearning within them.

After a long while, she reached into the folds of her dress and retrieved something carefully hidden within.

A portrait.

It was old and frayed, its edges worn from the passage of time. The image upon it had faded, but two figures could still be clearly seen - a young man and a young woman. They stood beside one another, smiling as though the world had never given them a reason to be anything but happy.

Sandra stared at the portrait for a long time, her fingers gently brushing against its worn surface. A trace of longing flickered across her pale face, but it quickly disappeared. It was replaced by something cold and driven.

She lowered her gaze. The cold wind continued to howl around her, making the old castle groan beneath the crimson moon.

The next moment, her figure burst into a swarm of bats, and she flew toward one of the open windows in the castle.

The eclipse was near, and she still had much to do before everything was finally set in motion.
