The party from the City Hall consisted of two elves and three humans.
While the other side comprised only two humans, one of whom was already incapacitated.
And yet, the party from the City Hall did not make any reckless moves. For some reason, their leader, the Templar Paladin, had forbidden them to.
They couldn’t understand the reason.
Wasn’t the other side far outnumbered? Their group could easily take care of the one Magus even though he was at the Mana Seed Rank.
To begin with, hadn’t they come here to apprehend the person responsible for the chaos being wrought in the city?
Why had they suddenly stopped then?
The four adventurers from the City Hall stood guard by the entrance of the throne room. Some looked around warily at the destroyed chamber, while others eyed the unconscious Luca sprawled on the stairs leading to the throne.
As for Adam and the Templar Paladin, Gregor, they stood before the throne, talking with one another.
"You said your name was Bucca?" Gregor asked with a light frown.
"Yes," Adam replied with a stoic face.
"What is your relationship with the Lone Wolf?"
"The Lone Wolf?" Adam arched a brow. "Ah, you mean Luca. I’m his elder brother."
Gregor’s eyes narrowed. "Elder brother? How did you arrive here? Wait! Don’t tell me..."
Adam nodded and spoke matter-of-factly. "My little brother goes missing, so why shouldn’t I come looking for him?"
"But... how?" Gregor was truly perplexed.
"How I found the mist?" Adam asked. "I asked around. Did some research. And then patiently waited for the mist to swallow me whole."
Gregor looked deeply at Adam, his frown deepening. "And how long have you been inside this secret plane?"
Adam’s grey eyes narrowed, a sharp glint flickering in them. "Long enough to learn about many interesting things."
Gregor didn’t know what it was. Perhaps it was the look in Adam’s eyes, or the way in which he spoke those words; the Paladin couldn’t help but subconsciously gulp.
"Now my turn to ask questions," Adam spoke in a way that left no room for refusal.
"Why did you all come here with such hostility?" he asked. "If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were here to kill my little brother and me."
"You don’t understand, Magus Bucca!" Gregor replied honestly. "We were here to make sure that the Last Knight didn’t die. But we were too late—"
Adam’s eyes spewed venom, and the aura around him turned cold and oppressive. "Whose side are you on, Paladin? Ours or the monsters’?"
"Rubbish!" Gregor blurted out. "You don’t understand the balance of power in this city! And you dare insinuate that I—"
Adam cut him off again. "Balance of power? Why do you care about something so petty? If new monsters arrive, just kill them."
Gregor looked deeply at the Magus, beginning to realize that he might not be the best person to discuss such matters with him.
Perhaps a meeting with Aramen or Kesha ought to fix that attitude, he thought darkly.
Kesha specialises in illusion and enchantment magic. I’m sure she can deal with him.
Adam continued, his tone lacking any amiability.
"Why is it that my little brother had to fend off all by himself in this monster-infested city, while you lot enjoyed yourselves within the safe confines of that building?"
Gregor said solemnly, "That is because your brother refused to comply with the rules."
He paused for a moment, then continued, "You must understand, Magus Bucca, that in a place like this, the only thing separating us from the monsters is rules and regulations!"
He truly thought that Adam would scoff at his words and argue back, but he was surprised by the reply.
"My little brother is not one to follow rules," Adam said, nodding in understanding.
His tone carried blatant disdain as he continued, "Especially when said rules come down from stunted vermin and long-eared parasites."
He cast a look of pure disgust toward the two elves standing by the entrance.
Meanwhile, Gregor inwardly nodded to himself.
He’s just like the Lone Wolf. Both brothers look down on anyone who is not a human.
"So what do you plan to do now?" Adam smoothly changed the topic. "Now that the knight and the werewolf are dead."
Gregor’s eyes narrowed. "How do you know about the werewolf?"
Adam scoffed. "I was the one who killed it."
Gregor’s eyes slowly widened. "You... what?"
Adam remained silent.
It is better to create a persona that commanded respect from the councilors at City Hall, he thought.
The more formidable he appeared, the less likely they would be to scheme against him. Not that Adam was particularly worried about their petty tricks. He was confident enough in his ability to deal with whatever schemes they might come up with.
But that would be annoying. And Adam already had enough on his plate.
Somewhere out there was a sinister mastermind capable of manipulating his thoughts and memories through Valerian’s amulet. Compared to that, the schemes of a few councilors hardly seemed worth his time.
I already have one unseen enemy playing games with me. I don’t need another.
So this was the method he had chosen.
If strength and reputation could make the councilors think twice before trying anything against him, so be it. It was far easier to make people cautious of him from the beginning than waste time constantly dealing with their schemes.
Adam cast an uninterested glance at Gregor and said, "If that is all, Paladin, then my brother and I will get going."
With that, he turned toward Luca and slung him on his shoulders.
Gregor hesitated for a few moments before he called out. "Wait a minute!"
Adam hid the smirk forming across his lips. He turned to the man with a slightly displeased expression and spat, "What?"
If Gregor was offended by Adam’s rudeness, then he hid it pretty well. His expression gradually softened as he looked at Luca’s unconscious figure.
The man was in a terrible state. His entire body was covered in blood, and although most of his wounds had stopped bleeding, he clearly required proper medical attention.
Gregor let out a quiet sigh.
"Whatever happened here, we can discuss it later," he said amicably.
"Your brother needs treatment."
On the surface, Adam appeared to hesitate. But inside, he couldn’t help but sneer.
Gregor continued in a calm and sincere voice:
"Come with us to City Hall, Magus Bucca. We have healers, medicine, and enough supplies to treat his injuries."
