Chapter 2056: Emotions and Reason

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Adam could tell she was serious.

And just like Luca, he too was confused. He thought:

If she’s against the vampires, why is she trying so hard to protect that fool?

Even if she doesn’t recognize my face, this... is a little strange.

He had no other choice but to raise his hands in a show of surrender.

"Calm down, lady. No need to get all violent," he said.

At the same time, he secretly cast [Mind Whisper].

’It’s me, Adam Constantine,’ he said. ’We visited those two places that you marked on the map. We’ve retrieved the items that were hidden there.’

Sandra’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second before immediately returning to normal. Thankfully, Malik had his complete attention fixed on Adam, so he didn’t notice her subtle change of expression.

"Fufu," Sandra chuckled. "My, my, what an understanding gentleman we have here."

Adam crossed his arms and put on a solemn expression. "So what’s this war I hear? Are you people so eager to die?"

"You have truly offended His Majesty," Sandra said with a cold smile. "Of course, there is a way to stop this war. No one has to die."

"Let me guess." Adam’s eyes narrowed. "You want my head in return."

Sandra’s response was a charming smile.

"Not happening." Adam shook his head and began walking. But he didn’t walk toward the group of vampires. Instead, he walked around them.

He silently sent Sandra another mental transmission:

’Genevieve, is she... is she alive?’

Without a change in expression, Sandra replied:

’Yes. She is unharmed. Untouched.’

Adam subconsciously heaved a sigh of relief. He did not fully believe Sandra’s words. He did not even know if they were the truth. But a little confirmation was better than nothing. And deep down, he would rather believe a lie than listen to the truth. How strange, this feeling.

Malik and the other vampires warily watched Adam move. Just because the latter had surrendered did not mean they would let their guards down.

"Since my people and yours did not come to an agreement," Adam continued casually, "war truly is inevitable, I see."

’Why are those items from the temples so important? Why did you want us to retrieve them?’ he asked secretly.

"Inevitable, indeed," Sandra answered. "The time and place have already been decided. Now all that’s left... is war."

’Those two weapons are the only things that can harm Jacob,’ she replied through [Mind Whisper].

’Long ago, he had already devoured the spirit of the secret plane. So here, he is invincible! Only those weapons offer us a hope of killing him. And they cannot be wielded by undead such as myself.’

Adam didn’t let the shock show on his face. He had to give credit to the Faceless Mask for that.

The Vampire King devoured the spirit of the secret plane?!

He is invincible?!

There was so much he wanted to ask Sandra. But ravens silently perched on nearby trees, watching him, her, everyone.

"I see," he murmured. He looked at Sandra solemnly. "Then I suppose, war it is."

Sandra smiled coldly. While keeping her gaze on Adam, she said to Malik, "Take the front. Everyone else, stay in the middle. I’ll bring up the rear."

Malik nodded. He cast a hateful glare at Adam, then began leading his people away. Sandra slowly retreated as well, warily watching out for any sudden movements by Adam.

’There is much I wish to tell you, but there is not much time,’ she said through mental transmission.

’Jacob grows more and more wary of others as the eclipse draws near. He wishes to use Genevieve as a vessel to revive his long-dead lover. He is strong, Adam. Very strong. But with the two weapons you secured, we stand a chance.’

Slowly, the distance between them grew. Sandra left behind her parting words. They were ominous words.

’Jacob’s army is bigger than yours. But we have more Mana Seed Magi and Templar Paladins than you do. Even after you killed four and maimed another, we still outnumber you by one. However, beware... Jacob isn’t who you should be wary of.’

With that said, her figure vanished into the woods.

Adam stood silently as a tempest of wild emotions swirled within his heart.

Genevieve... a vessel?

Jacob wants to revive his wife inside Genevieve’s body?

As the ravens slowly started to fly away, Adam remained rooted on the spot. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard from Sandra.

He was not even thinking about the fact that Jacob was invincible in this secret plane due to having devoured its spirit. No, he thought of none of that.

His thoughts kept returning to Genevieve. Again and again and again.

For a moment, he felt the urge to abandon everything and rush to Jacob’s castle and rescue her. He gritted his teeth, torn between emotions and reason.

In the end, he cursed aloud.

"Fuck!"

With a heavy heart, he turned around and headed toward City Hall.

Although Adam silently made his way into the building, the other Councilors were quickly made aware of his arrival.

When they entered the meeting chamber, Adam and Luca were already waiting inside.

The moment Umlo saw Adam seated in his chair, he burst into rage. "You! Do you have any idea about what you’ve done?! You killed four of their Generals, and now they’ve declared war!"

"I know," Adam calmly replied.

The dwarf was taken aback. That was not the response he had expected. However, before he could even speak, Adam began.

"You and I," he said, looking at the original four Councilors. "We might have had our differences in the beginning. But tell me. Truthfully, tell me. Do you want to escape from this nightmare? Or stay here lording over this little city for the rest of your lives?"

Kesha frowned. "Is that even a question?"

"Of course, we want to leave this shithole!" Gregor said in an icy tone.

"Boy, do not look down on us!" Umlo roared. "You think we haven’t attempted to escape?"

Aramen was the only one who remained silent. Adam never really liked the guy. Even now, he could tell the old man was thinking of a thousand ways to kill him behind that stoic facade.

"Out with it," Aramen said flatly.

Adam exchanged a brief glance with Luca. Under unexpected circumstances, the two of them had formed a tribe. They trusted one another. He gave the Paladin a light nod.

Luca looked at the other Councilors and solemnly said, "We have a way to kill the Vampire King."

Adam added confidently:

"So let us go to war."
