Heavy silence descended in the chamber as the sacrificial ritual was interrupted. The ghouls standing by the walls watched with wide eyes, unable to speak a word.
Even Jacob de Vile couldn't find the words. The fury in his chest was raging, and his mind was a mess. The betrayal hurt deeply.
The person who had saved him from the brink of death. The person who had helped him acquire the power of the vampire. The person who had helped him defeat his archnemesis and bring justice to his wife and unborn child. That very person had now betrayed him.
"Aneesa!" Jacob roared. Eyes bloodshot and fangs sharp. "TRAITOR!"
Those words washed over "Aneesa" like a breeze. Adam did not even pay attention to them.
Wearing the old hag's face, he glanced at the innocent girl whom he had just killed in cold blood. His hands were still wrapped around her neck.
Warmth slowly fled the girl's flesh as he watched her in a daze.
This girl, whoever she was, once had hopes and dreams and aspirations. She might have had a mother, a father, siblings, and perhaps a lover. She was a human being.
And yet, Adam had killed her.
In that moment, before he snapped her neck, she seemed so calm and peaceful and beautiful. That single moment before violence was immortalized inside Adam's mind.
When did I become so cold?
When did I become… a monster?
He wanted desperately to reason that his actions were justified. That had he not killed the girl, the ritual would have begun, and he would have lost Genevieve.
He wanted to justify that he had killed so that Genevieve could live.
But who was he to decide?
At the end of the day, the girl was innocent and he killed her.
He was a murderer. He was a monster.
And when the girl's soul entered the Lotus' mysterious space, something inside Adam cracked.
"I'm sorry—"
That was all he could muster before the Vampire King arrived before him and struck him down with a fist coated in wrath and hatred.
"How dare you?!" Jacob roared.
He had never felt so much rage before. He was so close to reuniting with Charlotte. But just when it seemed that all his patience and planning and efforts had been rewarded, the person he trusted the most betrayed him.
Suddenly, Jacob felt something strange. Through the hole in the wall that "Aneesa" was hurled through, he saw a figure rising. In the dust and debris, the outline of the figure shifted drastically.
That figure, that person… did not look like Aneesa at all.
"Your Grace!!"
One of the ghouls called out. Then several more called out frantically.
"What!" Jacob snarled. His gaze was still glued to the unknown figure slowly approaching him through the dusty darkness.
"Y-Y-Your prisoner!" One of them muttered in horror. "She's gone!"
Jacob's eyes widened. He turned around, his bloodshot eyes settling on the rectangular slab that had been occupied by Genevieve. Except now, it was empty. She was gone. Only the ruby amulet lay sprawled on the cold surface, lonely and sad.
"No…" A whimper escaped the mighty Vampire King as he saw all his plans crumble before his eyes. His hope to reunite with the love of his life was erased forever.
"It was you!" Jacob turned back around and screamed in anguish. "YOU DID THIS!"
Adam stood amid the rubble, the golden-crimson light of the eclipse shining on his haggard figure. His chest had caved in, bones cracked and visible. His face was pale and blood slipped from the corner of his lips.
But the gaping injury on his chest rapidly healed. The blood mysteriously backtracked and returned inside his body. Even the fabric of his robes mended itself with startling precision.
If one didn't know any better, they'd think time had flown backward for him.
Jacob was only surprised by what he witnessed for half a second. His anger and hatred quickly took over. He brandished his sword — the sword he had used to conquer Edavane and Valcouronne.
"I will end you!"
In response, Adam silently retrieved the Morning Star.
The whip's hilt settled smoothly in his palm. Jacob did not notice anything strange about the weapon as Adam hadn't yet infused it with mana. It looked like just another whip. If there was anything amiss, it was that the weapon was a chain-like whip instead of the usual whips.
Dark mana swirled around Jacob's blade as he shot forward, cloaked in anger, hate, betrayal, and the memory of lost love.
Adam exploded into motion, shooting forward like a comet.
Overcome by otherworldly rage, Jacob hacked his sword in a clean arc, swinging to decapitate the human in one motion.
At the last possible second, Adam increased his speed even further, taking Jacob by surprise.
Now inside the vampire's guard, he activated the Morning Star and jumped gracefully over Jacob's shoulders, twirling like a butterfly in the air as the whip coiled around Jacob's arm.
Fire and light magic coated the chains as they coiled around Jacob's arm like a viper.
Adam's hand blurred as a terrifying whip crack thundered through the chamber. His feet finally touched the ground as he landed several meters behind Jacob.
Thud!
Jacob's sword arm fell to the ground.
Adam turned and muttered, "Looks like you've gotten rusty, O Vampire King."
Jacob was still in a state of shock as he witnessed cold blood gush out from his shoulder.
Adam whipped the Morning Star once again, this time at a higher angle and in a circular motion.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!
All the ghouls standing inside the vast chamber collapsed to the ground, their heads severed from their bodies.
It was only then that Jacob shifted his attention to Adam, his cold and wrathful eyes drilling into him.
"Who are you?" His cold words echoed in the chamber. "Where did you get that weapon?"
Jacob was invincible. He was supposed to be.
He hadn't bled since he devoured this plane's spirit.
And yet, today he lost an arm.
Adam grinned. "I am the consequences of your sin."
He raised his hand to attack again.
But before he could strike, an unexpected and unbelievable change swept through the secret plane.
The moon began to fracture.
