Chapter 2074 Mistress of Blood

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Luca lowered his shield and rolled his shoulders to ease the pain.

A meteor had landed directly upon him, but he stood like a monolith, protecting the few people behind him.

With the shield deactivated, the dome disappeared.

Leah and Michael watched the surroundings in horror. It was pure chaos. Fire everywhere. Dead bodies scattered across the burning plain.

Only a couple of dozen people survived the meteor rain.

More than a hundred adventurers died. Umlo and Gregor were among the deceased. Kesha was barely standing. Somehow, she had managed to protect herself, Daerona, and a few other elves.

Even Aramen had made it out alive. Though he was panting slightly. Judging by the red-hot, gleaming edge of his sword, the old man must have cleaved a meteor in two.

"So many… dead." Leah's face paled.

Michael was so shocked that he couldn't even speak. He just stared in horror as tears streaked down his face.

When the adventurers left City Hall, there were five hundred of them. After the battle, a little less than a hundred and fifty survived. And now, barely thirty people were left.

The moon had killed over a hundred of them!

Luca did not care about how many adventurers died. He was concerned about the mortal humans. He wondered if they made it out alive. The chances were very slim. Nigh impossible.

"Damn it," he muttered silently.

He turned eastward. Before the moon exploded and fell upon the land, he had caught a glimpse of a crimson comet soaring toward Castle de Vile.

The unknown variable, he thought grimly.

He and Adam were certain that Jacob was not the true threat. They believed it was the gypsy. But it turned out that even she was not the real danger.

Luca turned to Sandra, who watched the skies with wide eyes, and asked solemnly, "What was that?"

Sandra's lips parted, but no words came out.

Luca growled. Just when he was about to press for answers, he noticed Sandra pointing a trembling finger toward the sky.

A thunderous sound of tearing echoed through every corner of the land.

Luca turned toward the sky, and his expression darkened. A gaping, black tear had formed in the sky. And it was becoming bigger by the moment. Through the fissure in the sky, an abstract, multi-colored world came into view.

"The spirit world," Luca murmured.

"We need to leave." Sandra's expression turned utterly solemn.

"The secret plane is falling apart!"

Everyone heard her words. They shuddered in fear.

Aramen turned to her and coldly asked, "Where is the exit?"

Sandra replied in a daze. "Behind… behind the castle."

A gust of wind blew, and Aramen had disappeared from his spot. He had not even bothered with the rest.

One by one, everyone snapped to their senses and rushed toward the castle.

Soon, only Luca and his group were left. Sandra, Michael, and Leah urged him to leave quickly. However, his gaze was glued to the direction of one of the human settlements.

"Luca…" Michael tried to think of the right words.

"I know," Luca said in a low voice.

With a heavy heart, he forced himself to turn away and ran east with the others.

***

More than half of Castle de Vile had been destroyed by the meteor rain.

Adam woke up beneath a pile of rubble, his forehead gushing blood. But he did not care about the injury at the moment.

The first thing he did was check his connection with Valerian.

"Val! Val, can you hear me?" he spoke mentally through the communication artifact.

"Brother! Brother, I'm here! Are you safe?"

The little fellow's panicked voice sounded in Adam's ears. He finally heaved a sigh of relief.

"And Genevieve? Is she…"

"She's with me! She's safe," Valerian replied.

"She's still unconscious, but she's breathing. Don't worry, Brother. I will protect her!"

It was as though a heavy weight had come off Adam's shoulders. He couldn't help but smile despite his current predicament.

Both Valerian and Genevieve were alive and safe. That was all that mattered.

The two were hiding somewhere nearby, close to the exit of the secret plane. Adam immediately instructed Valerian to get out of the secret plane with Genevieve and keep the concealment artifact activated.

Now, onto more dire matters.

The shuffling of footsteps echoed beside Adam.

A few meters away from him, to the side, the Vampire King, Jacob de Vile, rose to his feet. He was still missing an arm. But that was the least of his worries.

Jacob stared ahead. Standing in front of him was a giant, pale monster. He felt a close connection with this monster. Almost as if… he originated from her. But he was not in the right state of mind to ponder such matters deeply.

"Who are you?" he asked in a trembling voice, seething with rage as he remembered how close he was to reuniting with his wife.

Truly. Who was this monster who suddenly fell from the skies? Not just that, but the pale, towering creature stood atop the rectangular slab previously occupied by Genevieve, and clutched Jacob's ruby amulet — the one that housed Charlotte's soul.

The monster ignored Jacob. She continued to play with the ruby amulet in her hand. She turned and looked in Aneesa's direction.

"Useless," she said in a deep, guttural voice.

She spoke in the devil tongue, Infernac.

Adam pushed the large block of stone to the side and rose to his feet. His forehead had healed. His clothes were dusty, but that too was quickly taken care of.

The pale monster shifted her gaze away from Aneesa's corpse. She looked at Adam. Or rather, his hand, which was concealed by Hannibal's Handwraps. A flicker of interest passed through her giant crimson eyes.

"The finest trick the devil ever wrought was to persuade the world that he did not exist," Adam said. "Or should I say… that she did not exist."

"So you're the one who disrupted my ritual," the Mistress of Blood, Sanguina, said in a cold, flat voice.

Adam was about to answer. But Jacob beat him to it.

"Who are you?" he growled in fury. "I demand an answer!"

Sanguina's eyes narrowed imperceptibly. "Demand?"

Before Jacob could even reply, the pale monster took a step forward and appeared before him. She gently cradled his face with her long, sinewy hand. She gently grabbed his neck and brought him closer.

Then, under Adam's horrified gaze, the Mistress of Blood devoured Jacob de Vile.

That's all for today. The ending of this volume requires more work than I had anticipated. Hope you guys like it. We are not far from the conclusion of volume 9.
