Chapter 2083 Paradigm Shift

Voraxus looked up from the parchment.

"How can someone's fate correct itself?" He asked with a frown. "Is that even possible?"

"Normally, no." Venia shook her head.

"Once someone's fate has been changed, it doesn't simply correct itself. But there are exceptions. Those with exceptionally strong fate threads seem to possess the ability to resist changes to their destiny."

This came as a surprise to Voraxus. Inwardly, he couldn't help but feel a flicker of approval that Valerian had grown up under the care of such an individual.

But soon, his expression turned grave and he said, "The Domina Occulta and the Great Noble Houses are involved now. How did this happen? Is this the 'resistance' that Mother spoke of? Not to mention…"

He spoke his following words carefully. He looked around cautiously as though he were being spied upon.

"…If this Old Mistress who I think it is, then this is very troublesome."

Venia agreed. She couldn't care less about the Domina Occulta and the Great Noble Houses of the Imperium.

But the Old Mistress was an entirely different matter.

"Something is very strange with the boy," she said after long moments of deliberation.

"Adam?"

"Yes." Venia nodded. "The more I tried to tamper with his fate, the more events manifested that ended up being beneficial to him. It's as though… his fate is trying to return to a state of equilibrium."

The more misfortune she brought upon Adam, the more events would unfold that ultimately proved to be highly fortunate for him.

It was unlike anything she had ever heard of before. Never had she seen someone whose fate seemed to instinctively correct itself whenever it was disturbed.

The harder she pushed, the harder fate pushed back.

And every time she tried to drag Adam toward misfortune, something else would inevitably appear to pull him back toward fortune.

Voraxus studied his sister, who slipped into deep thought.

Something's bothering her, he thought.

He shook his head and resumed reading.

How interesting that Adam's spirit energy would suddenly spike! Even stranger is that his spirit energy levels are powerful enough to rival a newly advanced Mana Seed Magus.

Adam Constantine is indeed a man of many secrets!

Before he left for his first mission from the Adventurers' Guild, lovely Ira warned about being careful with Valerian. Adam's panic grew. He began worrying about his little brother's true identity being found out. So he instructed Valerian to remain inside his spirit sea.

The younger brother's resentment secretly grew, but he never once voiced it. Because he loved his elder brother and always listened to him.

To deepen Valerian's resentment and Adam's fear, Venia secretly manipulated the gnome at the Guild to give Adam the mission involving Esmond Greene.

The two brothers were constantly attacked on their way to Marbleford. Strangely, Adam had grown suspicious of the attacks. Why is he so wary of coincidences? Is it just his cautious nature? Or perhaps something else? Truly a man of many secrets!

Esmond Greene finally makes an appearance in the story. Adam already finds the old man suspicious. But then again, he finds everyone suspicious. He sensed something amiss. Very soon, his suspicions were warranted when he realized they were being followed by vampires who wanted something in Esmond's possession.

Adam fought off the two vampires with relative ease. He killed one of them, but the other fled. It was strange that Adam had even allowed one of the vampires to escape. But he didn't think much of it. He figured that the vampire was just very good at escaping.

Little did he know, the vampire who escaped—Dorian Moreau—would play an integral part in the story. The vampire would eventually become the one to fully convince Adam that he was incapable of protecting his little brother, Valerian.

Ah, only if he had killed Dorian when he had the chance, Adam might have still found a way to stay together with Valerian. But fate had other plans. Or rather… Venia had other plans.

With his mission accomplished, Adam returned to Davos.

In comes a minor character, Leto Morgan, a famous adventurer and author, who just so happened to be at the Rabbit Hole when Adam returned.

If the flow of fate continued to correct itself around Adam, then Leto would play a crucial role in the future, one that would slowly but surely separate the two brothers. But that would most likely not come to pass, as by now there were several moving parts in the grand story. And Leto was only a contingency plan of a contingency plan.

That night, a shooting star streaked across the night sky. Valerian watched it with awe and quickly made a wish. He wished he could live and travel more freely. He loved his brother, but hated being restricted inside his spirit sea. And so he made that wish. Little did he know, Venia would do everything in her power to make that wish come true.

***

The enigmatic Hannibal confirmed his suspicion when Valerian entered through the gates of Davos again. Even the great adventurer was becoming suspicious of such coincidences. The young dragon was being allowed entry, something that should not have been possible.

And so Hannibal confronted the Dragon of Davos, Ajax. However, no matter how much he questioned the dragon, Ajax would not tell him anything. It made sense because Ajax had already made secret arrangements with Venia Somnia and already sworn a mana oath. So he could not divulge any secrets.

All Hannibal could learn from his interaction with Ajax was that an Empyrean-level faction was interested in Valerian. And that in return for helping them, Davos would receive benefits.

Hannibal trusted Ajax's words. He trusted that the Empyrean interested in Valerian would not go back on theirs. And so, the two began discussing a new candidate for the position of Known Lord, someone who was a friend to them. That someone was Emily Damon, the former Lady of the Sapphire Tower, and the Witch of Davos.

But little did Hannibal know his close friend, Leto Morgan, was about to be embroiled in the scheme to remove the greedy Nigel Norwood.

Esmond Greene and Channing Oakley began preparing for the expedition. Of course, as old men, they wouldn't be participating themselves. They would be putting together a team. Naturally, Adam Constantine would be a part of that team.

The following several paragraphs were struck off.

Voraxus's brows furrowed tightly when he saw how roughly the lines were drawn across the words. This was the Pen's resistance. And it seemed that whatever the artifact had been manifesting, Venia did not want that to occur, so she had struck those words off quickly.

The entire next two pages were stuck off like that. Voraxus saw a fierce tug of war between Venia and the Pen of Manifestation.

But it seemed, in the end, the Pen won.

Voraxus's eyes slowly widened as he read the following words:

Because so many attempts had been made to tamper with Adam's fate, a mysterious force had begun to fight back.

And then, something completely beyond Venia's expectations happened.

A girl who was running low on finances decided to join the expedition. She hailed from two hallowed lineages. Yet even she was unaware of it.

Her involvement was something Venia could neither predict nor prevent.

The moment this girl entered the story, the paradigm shifted.

Her name was Genevieve Saint Laurent.

And she was a descendant of Miracle.
